About

Rufus Wainwright, born in New York although holding both American and Canadian citizenship, brings together many varied genres including, pop, opera, baroque, rock, classical and ragtime into a unique style. He cites a wide variety of musical influences such as Judy Garland, Edith Piaf and Al Jolson, along with his many operatic favourites. As well as writing commercial pop music, Wainwright has also written operas and much music for soundtracks.

So far in his career, Rufus Wainwright has released 10 albums between 1998 and 2012. The debut album in 1998 was simply titled Rufus Wainwright. This first album was met with great critical acclaim. Rolling Stone magazine hailed Wainwright as the Best New Artist that year citing this album as one of the best of 1998. The album also won several awards from the Gay & Lesbian American Music Awards and a GLAAD Media Award. The nine albums which followed were: Poses in 2001, Want One in 2003, Want Two in 2004, Release the Stars and Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall both in 2007, Milwaukee at Last!!! in 2009, All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu in 2010, House of Rufus in 2011 and Out of the Game in 2012.

Wainwright has collaborated and toured with many different artists, musicians and producers. His fifth album included performances with his sister and his mother Martha Wainwright and Kate McGarrigle, Richard Thompson, Neil Tennant, Julianna Raye, Joan Wasser, and Toby Dammit. He has toured with Sting, Guster, Ben Folds and Tori Amos as well as headlining his own tours. For his seventh album Wainwright teamed up with popular dance and pop producer Mark Ronson to generate a more accessible musical format without compromising his distinctive style - the result was Out of the Game.

Cigarettes and chocolate milk was sung, not served.

by Fabulous Rufus Wainwright on 11/19/23Birchmere - Alexandria

Birchmere + Rufus is a glorious collaboration. Great sound in a comfortable setting for a sold-out show. Vinyl merch purchases are an excellent souvenir.

One of my all-time favorite singers!

by Ashley on 10/4/23The Louisville Palace - Louisville

I have been a fan of Rufus Wainwright since I first heard his debut album when I was in high school (not long after it was released). I was lucky enough to get to see him early on back then when he came to a small venue in my hometown and I got there early enough to be able to rest my arms on the raised stage and look up at this tremendous performer for a night of glorious music (the picture I took of him singing right above me, red lights glowing on him is one of my favorites and it sits framed in my music room on my piano) - and I stayed late enough that night to meet him and his sister, Martha (also a fabulous musician) outside his tour bus! I've seen Rufus in concert twice since then (and Martha once) and this was one of my favorite performances, because Want One & Want Two are such great albums, full of so many fabulous songs (in fact, I love them all, which is rare for a whole album, let alone two, to grab me so). Getting to hear Rufus' iconic voice along with our fabulous Louisville Orchestra (and his fantastic drummer) was just a real treat. And, who doesn't love a "dangerous waltz"and the real story behind "Beautiful Child"?! tee hee. I'm so happy that Rufus is still out there performing, and coming close enough to home that I get the chance to hear him live once again! Thank you, Ticketmaster, for helping provide access to such amazing performances!

    Good Concert

RW has an amazing voice, but several boring songs in the set. The Louisville Orchestra was phenomenal.

    Delightful

    by Jane on 7/5/23

The Wainwrights have a delightful connection with the audience. Their easy conversation is subtly hysterical and the perfect segue to their beautifully balanced voices and instrumentation.

    A class of his own

    by Ellen on 7/4/23

Rufus Wainwright and his amazing band — including Lucy Wainwright Roche — blew his Maine audience at this concert. All the musicians were tremendous, including and especially Rufus. Maine appreciates him making the trip!

Rufus Wainwright NEVER disappoints. Is one of the best singers around these days. Wonderful angelic voice! I could listen to him sing the Yellow Pages!

Worst concert I ever went to.

by Concert goer 7890 on 6/28/23Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

What a ways eod time. Rufus’ voice is great. They tunes are great. But he didn’t play one of top songs. Everything was a song we never heard before. When you are a fan of an artist and buy tickets the show you want to hear some songs you know. You want to hear the hits. It’s always cool and ok to awe in some newness but i bought tickets as I fan to hear and sing along to songs I like and heard before. Thankfully it was a seater concert as we just say and hung out. But this will be the last Rufus show I go to.

    Worth It

by Chris on 6/28/23Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

Rufus always gives his all in these performances and it was a pleasure to see him. I travelled from NYC all the way to Red Bank, NJ, a nearly two hour train ride to get there. Worth it.

    Great show

    by L. D. on 11/5/22

This was my first Rufus Wainwright show and I enjoyed it so much. It was just him with a guitar and on the keys, very stripped down, and yet so entertaining. I truly believe he is one of the most talented musical artists of my generation. The Birchmere was a great, intimate venue.

    Rufus has the goods

by Grinning Dog on 10/16/22Birchmere - Alexandria

Rufus Wainwright is an amazing vocal talent-and a wry and engaging raconteur. Even when his musical choices veer into the self indulgent the quality and timber of the sound coming out of him is a pleasure. His ability to accompany himself on piano or guitar with nuanced phrasing was a delight. So glad I popped for the tickets on a whim! The Birchmere is a nice, relatively intimate venue with decent wait service and meh food - waddayawant from a concert hall? I am very satisfied with the overall experience, hope they get another act I want to see sometime soon, I am ready for a repeat.

    Rufus superb, semi great.

by Lisa B on 10/5/21The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New York

Rufus did not disappoint. Upon entering, Security worked efficiently. Glad we arrived early as there is only limited benches along back perimeter of GA seating. We are in 60’s and needed to sit. Not sure $50+ Extra worth the “Ultimate Access” but you do get a nice bathroom and extraordinary views of city.

    Rufus Wainwright & Jose Gonzalez

by Sandi on 10/4/21The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New York

My favorite venue in NYC! Perfect fall evening to be outside. Great sound, screens, can social distance, plenty of restrooms so no waiting in line. Love both artists. Rufus gives it his all. I only wish there were more seats at Venue, hard to stand that long.

    FANTASTIC MUSIC FROOM RUFUS

    by r. h. on 10/3/21The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New York

Jose' Gonzales has have been on most half an hour rather than one hour. Audience got bored. The half an hour then should have been given to Rufus to do his great roster of songs ie.; HALLELUJAH . Rufus mentioned that he would have liked to do more of his songs but was limited to the neighborhood moratorium of NO CONCERTS after 10PM.

    AMAZING

by Ale on 10/3/21The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New York

One of the best concerts I have ever been to. José and Rufus were splendid, and the Brooklyn Bridge as a background made the whole experience simply magical.
