    meltingly beautiful

    by Twinkie96 on 5/11/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

The Joffrey outdid themselves with this new production of Rome and Juliet, set to Prokofiev's gorgeous score. The choreography was intimate and real and so human. I can't get this production out of my head, and I don't want to. I would go right back and see it again if I could. And the Auditorium Theatre is just stunning. A few tiny orchestral "misses" didn't detract from the power of the music and the ballet.

Joffrey Ballet Romeo and Juliet not to be missed!

by Macsurferman on 5/8/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

I had the opportunity to introduce my neighbor's 15 year old daughter to professional ballet and neither she nor I were disappointed. This is a a contemporary performance, without the normal ballet costumes of tutu, etc. so I was a bit skeptical at the beginning, but it quickly dissipated after the first few moments. The dancing is strong, and the emotions displayed by the dancers only added to the drama as the story unfolded. Although we were only able to obtain seats in the balcony, the view from virtually every seat is more than adequate to view the performance. Also I can't leave out accolades for the music. The orchestra was superb and the dancers were right on que. The performance moves on after this weekend, so get your tickets soon and don't miss this excellent ballet performance.

It was well structured. Casting and music was amazing. I liked the decoration and set up. Some scenes was a little boring and longer than you'd expect but overall I enjoyed it.

    Romeo and Juliet was amazing!

This production was the single best I've ever seen. I usually don't like modern adaptations but this was absolutely fantastic.

    Very Strange

    by 4kittiesmom on 5/7/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

I love ballet. This was not good, tho. It was set in the 1950's to the 1990's. Really? Juliet meets & marries Romeo & after they've been married 40 years her father still doesn't know it and is waiting for her to decide who she will marry?! The sets were awful, drop downs with what looked like old home movies projected on a screen. And the costumes were bad, too; just a mixed bag like what happened to be in the storeroom. If you love ballet skip this one.

    Perfection

by Anonymous on 5/7/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

It all comes together: choreography, dance, music, costumes and sets. The best thing I've seen in along time. Can't rave enough. I didn't want it to end.

    Romeo & Juliet New Version

by Anonymous on 5/6/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

I enjoyed the 2:00 p.m. matinee of Romeo & Juliet. This was a different take on the classic. Call me old fashioned, but I enjoy the old version better. Traditional music and all the dancers wearing tights, corsets, berets etc. Still had a good time. Cannot wait until next season 2014-2015.

The Joffrey's production of Romeo and Juliet was brilliant. Not only was it beautiful to watch, but it has caused me to reconsider how I read Shakespeare's play. True artistry!

    Wonderful ballet

by mininile on 5/6/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

I attended the ballet with my 14 yr old daughter who recently read Romeo and Juliet in school. She also is a ballerina. She was interested in how some of the characters would be portrayed in a ballet when they could not speak. She was extremely pleased with how the characters were portrayed. We both loved this ballet. It was our favorite!

    Romeo & Juliet was excellent

by Lisahambleton on 5/6/14DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Beautiful to watch the talented performers. The ballet was very easily interpreted. I was glad I knew the story. The next ballet I go to, I'll make sure I know the story.

should have just done West Side Story

by nukitty on 5/6/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

The individual performances were outstanding. If the rating were based solely on that, we would give five stars. We are traditionalists. We love the score, but we really didn't like the addition of a saxophone. We didn't like the female choreography - at least, Juliet's. Lady Capulet's was good. The male choregraphy was better. The costumes were okay, given the premise. Here's the thing - we really hated the concept and set design. It was a distraction. This is one of our favorite scores, and we felt it was cheapened by the awful set. We would rather have seen no balcony than the glass box idea. We thought that was hideous. We want a redo, with traditional costumes and set - and most of all, we want to see the regal, arrogant "Montagues and Capulets". And, we want a traditional sword fight. The bottom line is that we would rather have West Side Story, to which we believe this production tries to liken itself.

    I walked after 20 minutes

    by lgk395 on 5/6/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

This story takes place in Verona long, long ago and the audience knows it or should know it. .What we saw is a directors choice of location and costume, both of which totally rob the piece of its context. When men are dancing in modern suits it is hard to realize that it is ballet. When half the company wears black and the other half wears another equally unremarkable color, one has to work hard to try to understand what is going on. Having seen this several times before, including the theater in Warsaw where this production came from, I walked out after 20 minutes, not willing to subject myself to more of this director's conceits. It is unfortunate that public funds were used to fund the original production and that the Joffrey spends its previous money on something that is not what the composer intended. It is worse that young people may not know that there is something better.

This Romeo & Juliet is not to be missed

by BigDavidO on 5/5/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Too bad that this is such a limited engagement, but the Joffrey Ballet's new production of Romeo and Juliet is luminous, erotic and exciting as never before. Such virtuoso performances by every one of the dancers, such wonderful choreography and emotional expresson by the lead dancers made this a once in a life time experience!
