an amazing evening for Supertramp fans
by ndconcerts on 3/4/12Grand Casino Hinckley Event Center - HinckleyRating: 5 out of 5I go to a LOT of shows (more than 60 last year alone), and I'm pretty jaded, but this concert from former Supertramp singer/songwriter Roger Hodgson has to go down as one of the best I've seen by anyone, ever. There was nothing about this concert I didn't love--the venue (an intimate ballroom at Grand Casino in Hinckley, MN), my seat (just left of center, 8 rows back), the setlist (sure, he didn't do "It's Raining Again"...so what?), the band backing him (fantastic), and the man himself (a treasure). Roger was vocally on par with Supertramp's '70s heyday, he looked great for 61, and it's clear that time hasn't touched him at all. He moved from a keyboard to 12-string acoustic guitars to a grand piano from song to song throughout the show. He was funny and VERY personable, telling stories behind the songs he wrote, and very gracious towards the people of Minnesota in general. I had seen him before, once with Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band in St. Paul in 2001 and then solo at Taste of Minnesota in 2006. This was my first time seeing him with his new touring band, and they were magnificent; they really fleshed out the songs beautifully. To see him perform what was essentially a Supertramp concert in such a small, intimate room was surreal. This was Roger first Minnesota appearance since 2006; hopefully after this wonderful show he'll come around more often.
