RODRIGUEZ IN CONCERT:
Forgotten '70s folk hero Sixto Rodriguez finally has the audience he deserves. Enjoying a renewed interest in his music spurred by acclaimed Academy Award-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, Rodriguez released his first music in nearly 30 years in 2012, delighting fans around the world who thought his story ended with 1971 cult favorite Coming From Reality. At his 2013 shows, Rodriguez stunned with new songs from the documentary soundtrack alongside his classic '70s material, proving he's more than worthy of his belated stardom and building excitement for a new album and tour in 2014.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Born in Detroit to Mexican immigrant parents, Sixto Rodriguez was named after his position as the sixth child in his family. Dropping out of high school at 16, he focused instead on playing shows in Detroit's various bars and clubs, attracting the eye of producer Harry Balk for his debut 1967 single "I'll Slip Away." Signing to Sussex records a few years later, Rodriguez released his 1970 debut album Cold Fact, quickly following it up with 1971 sophomore album Coming From Reality. Neither album sold well in the US, resulting in his dismissal from the label and retirement from music, but by the mid-‘70s the albums had become hugely popular in Australia and South Africa —completely unbeknownst to Rodriguez. In the late '90s, two South African fans documented their search for Rodriguez, who was rumored to be dead, resulting in 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man. The film took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, leading to a flurry of media attention and a renewed interest in his music. With new material and tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans will have the opportunity to see Rodriguez soak up his second act as he hits the road for a series of highly anticipated concerts.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Rodriguez was better than expected, and I expected a lot! He played some amazing guitar, sang his heartbreaking poetic lyrics, and surprised us all with some incredibly well-timed corny jokes."
"Rodriguez has perfect pitch!! His music was enjoyable, loved how he mixed it up playing other artists too!! Fun show."
The best concert I have ever been to. Rodriquez is my hero!
Everyone should see Rodriguez while they can. He is amazing.
I’m glad I saw this living legend! I was shocked at how he’d aged but I guess aging isn’t optional. Rodriguez’ sense of humor was delightful and his guitar playing, fascinating. It made me tearful to hear him sing his songs- still sounded like him though he seemed a bit forgetful.
I would not know about Rodriguez unless I had seen the movie Looking for Sugarman. What could have happened, just as great as others Bob Dylan for example. His songs carry a message to all. I was surprised at the Parker Playhouse that I was probably one of the older patrons. The main audience was surely in there early twenties on. I would have expected there parents to be there? I was happy to see him and enjoyed his talking to the audience. He is 77 years and needed to be escorted on and off stage. He played with his guitar and hat and drew laughs when he said I have a lot of flexibility when I play alone. Laughs from audience. In September playing at whembly hall in England, the concert 75% sold out . He is ours and he needs recognition that is due him an Unknown Legend..
I think Rodriguez should retire. I felt like I was in a bad karaoke bar. The second act ,some lady with a guitar was as bad as it gets. Like she could not sing period. Rodriguez showed up without a band of any kind. Just his guitar. The guitar sound was very loud and you could barely hear him. Frankly I do not understand how Ticketmaster promotes something like this.
Great Legend!! It was awesome to se him live. Still as humble as ever
It was great to see a legend. But, the ravages of time get everybody. Not a sterling performance
He was fantastic. Loved that he was solo and can hear every guitar strum and every note he sang. Did NOT like the SECOND opening act. Was not necessary . Victory, however, was the best opening act. She had pizazz and talent and was humble.
Nice energy as he played his whole Cold Fact cd plus some interesting cover songs. He's got a nice combo of relating to the audience, and running his one man band.
His reputation preceded him and set the bar very high. I should have considered his age and health limitations. While I could feel his spirit his performance was weak. I will continue to listen to his past music but I would not recommend his show.
Waist of money. Horrible opening act. One lady was just talking instead of singing. They should be ashamed of using our money for this Rodriguez was singing mostly other people songs and not to the end. Waist of money.
Waited a long time to see him and was disappointing. He was alone with a guitar. He need help on and off stage. Not sure if that is for age or that he was obviously drunk. Was still good to see him as he had some flashes of talent, Concert was less then an hour. I hope he gets better soon. He is supposed to play at Prince Albert Hall in September. He will need to get it together. The Parker Playhouse is a great venue!
He was AMAZING. With a Heavy heart wishing he was in BETTER Health. Also hoping that he would have brought a backup band, as well !!
I loved the documentary and that’s why I came to see Rodriguez. I’m glad I got to see him and I’m glad he’s finishing his career on stage but it’s over. I don’t mind that his eyesight is failing or that he needed to be helped to his stool - his health is failing and he’s 75 years old. What I do mind is his voice was very weak (strangely it did get stronger during the show), his mic was way too low, his guitar wasn’t coming through the system for the first four or five songs, his daughter(?) was prompting him through the set list and lyrics to the songs, etc. Again, I wasn’t expecting his 1970s self and I’m glad I got to see him but this was a very sad to his career. He should not be performing live anymore.
Rodriguez is so very skilled and entertaining, and his band was superb. We thoroughly enjoyed the show!
Rodriguez really struggled at this show. He often seemed lost and had to be talked through the set list from back stage. I saw him back in 2014, and he was great - lots of energy and telling stories between songs. Watching this show was uncomfortable by the end. I suggest skipping it and watching Searching for Sugar Man again instead. The four stars are for the venue. It's a grand theater with efficient security and seating.
I felt bad for Rodriguez -- he seems, along with his failing eyesight -- not to have much lung power anymore -- but equally as bad for everyone at the show. Seemed like a pick-up band that was unrehearsed -- they didn't have the arrangements or the sound worked out and the endings were all haphazard. Rodriguez's vocals were buried through the entire show and he was getting prompts for the song lyrics (and even chords) in his monitor -- very audible and strange. His guitar was not in the main PA until half way through. I can't remember seeing a show this shambolic at a venue like this.
Had a wonderful time watching Rodriguez, his daughters, and band. My only regret is that I hadn't had the opportunity sooner. Watch " Searching for Sugar Man", buy his music, and if you ever get a chance, see his show.
Having grown up with Rodriguez's music as a kid in South Africa, I was fortunate enough to see the genius live. What a wonderful performance by a wonderful human and a great artist. Long live Rodriguez !!!
I had front row seats and was truly moved and inspired to finally see Rodriguez live. His quiet manner and humor was endearing. He spoke to the audience and answered when someone called out a question. He did his own songs and some covers that were great. This was a great show and you should go to see this amazing show! Also a shout out to opening act Sammy Brue, new talent prodigy!
