RODRIGUEZ IN CONCERT:

Forgotten '70s folk hero Sixto Rodriguez finally has the audience he deserves. Enjoying a renewed interest in his music spurred by acclaimed Academy Award-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, Rodriguez released his first music in nearly 30 years in 2012, delighting fans around the world who thought his story ended with 1971 cult favorite Coming From Reality. At his 2013 shows, Rodriguez stunned with new songs from the documentary soundtrack alongside his classic '70s material, proving he's more than worthy of his belated stardom and building excitement for a new album and tour in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Detroit to Mexican immigrant parents, Sixto Rodriguez was named after his position as the sixth child in his family. Dropping out of high school at 16, he focused instead on playing shows in Detroit's various bars and clubs, attracting the eye of producer Harry Balk for his debut 1967 single "I'll Slip Away." Signing to Sussex records a few years later, Rodriguez released his 1970 debut album Cold Fact, quickly following it up with 1971 sophomore album Coming From Reality. Neither album sold well in the US, resulting in his dismissal from the label and retirement from music, but by the mid-‘70s the albums had become hugely popular in Australia and South Africa —completely unbeknownst to Rodriguez. In the late '90s, two South African fans documented their search for Rodriguez, who was rumored to be dead, resulting in 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man. The film took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, leading to a flurry of media attention and a renewed interest in his music. With new material and tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans will have the opportunity to see Rodriguez soak up his second act as he hits the road for a series of highly anticipated concerts.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Rodriguez is amazing! His voice, guitar playing, and song writing are superb. So much respect for this artist."

"Rodriguez was better than expected, and I expected a lot! He played some amazing guitar, sang his heartbreaking poetic lyrics, and surprised us all with some incredibly well-timed corny jokes."

"Rodriguez has perfect pitch!! His music was enjoyable, loved how he mixed it up playing other artists too!! Fun show."

    A true classic

by Kirwankid on 4/7/13Enmore Theatre - Sydney Australia

I saw Rodriguez in Sydney at the Enmore Theatre the week before last. What a fantastic night. Saw him with the Break which was a real experience. All our family has loved Rodriguez since the 70s in Australia, Mum and Dad who are now in their late 70s themselves. They loved his gritty lyrics and wonderful voice quality, telling it like it is.Then we found him again in Searching for Sugarman which I saw twice at the theatre and now own. Reliving his music has given our family much joy! What a legend. He sang all my favourites faithfully and despite his jokes about being a 'solid 70' he gave a wonderful performance. It's wonderful seeing Rodriguez, who we have listened to for years, finally getting the recognition he deserves worldwide. We are visiting NY and my son has surprised me with a ticket. it will be the highlight of my trip. Can't wait for tonight!

    Waiting for Sugar Man, man!

by djFlaxx on 1/24/13Town Hall - New York City

"Waiting For Sugar Man" was the most fascinating music documentary I've ever seen. I'm hopeful that the Oscar nomination will bring even more people into the incredible story of Detroit's magnetic musician Rodriguez. His songs are like a combination of Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Donovan and Curtis Mayfield, recounting stories of the streets with melody and a gritty sense of humor. It is inexplicable to me that Rodriguez has flown under the radar so long with his songwriting gifts and compelling voice. Can't wait to see him in New York City. Get on this!

    Sugar Man!!!

by AaronWolf on 12/16/12Cleveland - Cleveland

Rodriguez was plain and simple an absolute experience. If you're looking for a new sound that's ironically been around for decades, and a humble, gracious artist, that played for over two hours, then go see Rodriguez (Sugar Man). What a cool night. I hear he's playing NYC come spring...count me in!

    Outstanding

    by 5hourfan on 11/4/12Beachland - Cleveland

My wife and I drove nearly six hours to Cleveland to see this show. It was fantastic!! The story behind the music and the man is great, but his lyrics and the soul behind this man are unbeatable. We won´t ever forget this concert. On a side note to purists – don´t expect laser light shows and teams of people setting up amazing acoustics and synthesizers in perfect venues. It is a man and his guitar in it´s purest form. What you will find is his daughters and grand kids are most of his staff and this made the show even more special for us. We will certainly travel to see another show! Can´t wait.

Came to see Rodriguez and had to wait a long time to hear him. Did not dissapoint me with his clear voice and songs that grab the heart. Traveled 5hrs to see him and would do it again. I grew up in Los Angeles and have seen The Doors to Hendrix and this was my favorite show ever.

    Rodriguez at the El Rey

by JVMP1234 on 10/2/12El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

All of the performers were well worth watching. The final even, Rodgriguez, was all we hoped it would be. He is a very special soul, wouldn't have missed it!

    Great But Not Good

by Umused on 10/1/12El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Four performers whose average age was 70.3 years shared the El Rey stage Friday night in Los Angeles. Problem- old people (we fans) need to sit. The headliner, Rodriguez, came on stage 3.5 hours after the door s opened and we were already agitated by that time. A DJ filled in between sets and he obviously had a record collection that was second to none, problem is no one was there for vinyl discovery. No head bobbing or toe tapping was to be found. I summed up the night thinking, 'Now I know how the folks trapped on the ride at Knotts felt'. Hyun, the elder statesman of the crowd, impressed with his virtuoso skills but there was really no connection with the mostly non Korean crowd. Ok, Rodriguez finally takes the stage. He seemed to be obsessed with tuning his guitar and experienced a few mis-starts. Most of the awkward silence moments were filled with South African accented yeels from the crowd, "We love you Rodriguez". The band was able enough but there were between song huddles that led one to believe they were winging it. We were not treated to a show of a polished stage presense. Instead, a guy with a guitar who had some songs to offer. The two encore songs, "I Wonder" and "I think of You" were truely the highlight of the night. It all came together for a grand finale but by no means (other than the story) was it great.

    Searching for Sugarman

by everynamesbeentaken on 9/30/12El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Terrific show, terrific intervie, and terrific venue. My first time to Landmark, was thoroughly impressed with the staff. Do they pay them enough? Everything else there impressive, too. Rodriguez did Q&A after the film. Great time!

by Anonymous on 9/30/12El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

the sound mixing was something from high school, the "announcers" were painful. how many times did they need to introduce THEMSELVES???? too bad such fine artists were subject to such crappy support

    "SEARCHING FOR THE REAL RODRIGUEZ"

by MarcPlatt on 9/30/12El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Went to see the great Sixto Rodriguez at the El Rey Theatre last night. His set was last in a long night of celebration for the 10-year -anniversary of the "Light In The Attic" record label. Rodriguez was escorted to the stage at 11:30PM and proceeded to play for his adoring fans (many of them native South Africans) who loved his every move. I, unfortunately, didn't love many of his moves. The band was shoddy (and out of tune), the sound was "HISTORICALLY" terrible AND Mr. Rodriguez was disconnected and all over the place. He even tried to pull off an acoustic set of "I Only Have Eyes For You," "Blue Suede Shoes/Whol Lotta Shakin/Good Golly Miss Molly." OY. The band seemed shocked and the crowd was polite, but starting to leave in droves. I was happy to hear "Sugar Man," "Can't Get Away," "I Think Of You" and other great songs from his 40+-Year-Old 2-album catalog (which I purchased on vinyl last night). I was also happy to hear that he will be featured on 60 Minutes in October, but I will never pay money to see him perform live again. This was NOT a professional concert. This was a lot of people rightfully celebrating a terrific story. I'm glad I got to see him in person, but it was NOT WORTH ALL THE HYPE LIVE. I will enjoy my new vinyl and be glad I saw the incredible "Searching For Sugar Man" movie twice with my girl.

    Rodriguez

    by DRBABY24 on 9/4/12Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

I am an old folkie from the sixties and never heard of Rodriguez until 3 weeks ago when I saw his interview for the movie. I played his music and found out he was in Washington DC the same night I was there. I loved the concert and bought all the cd's. My wife put it best by saying that it was a happening and that it was. He is a gentle soul with words of a poet

    Rodriguez was great!

    by Paja7 on 9/1/12Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

The movie "Searching for Sugar Man" made me curious to go see him live. The cleverness of his lyrics, the feeling was great. Sad that we never heard him when he and I were younger. He has real talent and much, much better than a lot of the folk music of the sixties. Good show. I'd love to hear him in a smaller venue.

    Disappointing

by Anonymous on 9/1/12Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

I shouldn't have expected that the live performance in 2012 would be as good as the movie performance from a decade ago or the recordings from 40 years ago. It was sweet to see Rodriguez but his playing was poor and his voice is gone.
