About

RODRIGUEZ IN CONCERT:

Forgotten '70s folk hero Sixto Rodriguez finally has the audience he deserves. Enjoying a renewed interest in his music spurred by acclaimed Academy Award-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, Rodriguez released his first music in nearly 30 years in 2012, delighting fans around the world who thought his story ended with 1971 cult favorite Coming From Reality. At his 2013 shows, Rodriguez stunned with new songs from the documentary soundtrack alongside his classic '70s material, proving he's more than worthy of his belated stardom and building excitement for a new album and tour in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Detroit to Mexican immigrant parents, Sixto Rodriguez was named after his position as the sixth child in his family. Dropping out of high school at 16, he focused instead on playing shows in Detroit's various bars and clubs, attracting the eye of producer Harry Balk for his debut 1967 single "I'll Slip Away." Signing to Sussex records a few years later, Rodriguez released his 1970 debut album Cold Fact, quickly following it up with 1971 sophomore album Coming From Reality. Neither album sold well in the US, resulting in his dismissal from the label and retirement from music, but by the mid-‘70s the albums had become hugely popular in Australia and South Africa —completely unbeknownst to Rodriguez. In the late '90s, two South African fans documented their search for Rodriguez, who was rumored to be dead, resulting in 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man. The film took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, leading to a flurry of media attention and a renewed interest in his music. With new material and tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans will have the opportunity to see Rodriguez soak up his second act as he hits the road for a series of highly anticipated concerts.

    Rodriguez was loved!

by trice on 4/12/13Town Hall - New York

The audience at Town Hall Wednesday night fell in love with him. We couldn't get enough of him and he surprised us by coming out for an encore that was 5 songs long! He couldn't get enough of us either!! When he covered songs like Blue Suede Shoes and Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone, it was magical. I wish him all the good fortune he so deserves!!

    Rodriguez touched our hearts

by Yogaflow on 4/12/13Town Hall - New York

Rodriguez performs effortlessly from his heart. He is even better live than on his albums. I loved his new arrangements, new songs and fabulous cover songs. He appears to be a humble man of few words. We wanted to hear him speak to get a sense of him..but his presence , performance and few words he spoke were inspirational . We can't wait to hopefully see him again.

    Needs better management

by WoodstockJim on 4/12/13Town Hall - New York

Why even think that an opening act makes sense for him. If it does pick it well. She wasn't horrible but she was way out of her depth and her shaky performance highlighted it. Most important, get a touring band vs. a pickup band. Ticket sales more than support it. It really takes away from the songs and the performance when there is that disconnect and lack of energy in the connection between performer and band. Rodriguez's talent, voice, persona and songs will always save the day, but why not have it all work.

    Searching for Sugarman

by concertfandooody on 4/12/13Town Hall - New York

This was my most anticipated concert of the year. I loved the movie and listen to his CD's endlessly. I was sorely disappointed at the show, at times it was boring and just plain awful. Rodriguez is a spirited, loving full of soul guy. But his band was so bland with no spark (which was sorely needed) He mentioned he is 70 many times, he also told some jokes. But he needed a back-band that could bunch up the songs (like the one in the movie). I am glad I saw him but really would appreciate better accompaniment if I were to see him again.

Show was better than I expected. Very unique sound. He was engaging and really had the audience involved. Wish I had gotten more info to the person sitting to my left in row P Great company. Maybe I will find them on CL.

    Rodrigue Sugarman

by zelda10 on 4/12/13Town Hall - New York

The performance was painful and strange. The opening act was awful and on for an hour. If this is the band that Rodriguez travels with, he should lose it; especially the horns. It was amateur at best. They really need to practice together. They drowned out Rodriguez. Although he is a legend in our own time and deserves recognition, the performance was disappointing to say the least.

It was an honor to be at the concert but....

by HaimK on 4/12/13Town Hall - New York

It was an honor to be at the concert but the man is frail, the poor sound system did not help any. The musicians were a collection of street musicians that did not play well together. But I am happy I was there.

    I wonder....

by Geedl on 4/12/13Town Hall - New York

I wonder if the opening act was part of a dare? I wonder if the band rehearsed before the performance? I wonder if Rodriguez picked up his guitar before going on stage? I wonder if Rodriguez realizes that his original work is far better than Elvis or Frank Sinatra? I wonder why there was a need for a profane Mickey Mouse joke mid-concert? I wonder how the group is going to be received at Radio City Music Hall and The Barclay's Center in the fall? I wonder how many other fans felt the same?

    Should have watched the time

by Bug8 on 4/12/13Town Hall - New York

Rodriguez is a clever, talented guy and it was great seeing him in person. The warm up performer though - an hour? Way too long. She would have been smarter to play just 4 songs (since we didn't know about her, and we weren't there to see her), and ones she knew well (think there were 5 songs she stumbled in). A few songs, maybe 20 minutes, we wouldn't feel like we were trapped in a bad dream, an hour of our lives wasted. Venue could use screens so we could see his face (looked down, wore a hat).

Don't miss when Rodriguez comes to your town!

by TheCookieMan on 4/11/13Keswick Theatre - Glenside

I was really looking forward to seeing the Sugarman in concert, but the guy is 70 years old and needed help in stepping up to the mike, so I wasn't sure what kind of concert I was in for. Rodriguez was amazing! His voice was strong & clear, he was funny, he was still relevant. He played for almost 1 & a half hours so he is 70 years young! With people comparing him to Elvis and Dylan in the documentary movie, he had great good humor in covering Blue Suede Shoes and Like a Rolling Stone during the concert. His banter with the crowd was spot on, including telling an off-color Mickey Mouse joke. Also, the peacefulness and serenity of the man shines. Great music, great story, great man! PS Keswick is always a good place to see a show like this.

    Rodriguez Rocks

Combine a Dylan, a Neil, and a genuine charismatic socially conscious soul into a humble, gracious singer and song writer.

I am in love with Rodriguez!

by sophieluv on 4/10/13Beacon Theatre - New York

Having seen "Searching for Sugarman," I knew I had to see a Rodriguez performance in person if for no other reason, to express my love and support for him. The performance was straightforward - no special effects, little conversation - but I was mesmerized from start to finish. His voice was clear and wonderful, I could not take my eyes off of the way his fingers moved across his guitar and I loved his surprising song selection. He did not play some of his own songs that I expected but he covered Dylan, (with a MUCH better voice!) Elvis and even Frank Sinatra, putting his own touch on each of their songs. I was sad and concerned when he first appeared as he needed help onto the stage but once he started, all of that was forgotten and he was in command. What else can I say except, I LOVE Rodriguez!

    Amazing.

by Emeraldsinglass on 4/9/13Beacon Theatre - New York

This guy was absolutely incredible. At the age of 70, Rodriguez is able to sound almost exactly like his recorded material back in the 60's and 70's. I am so glad I got to see him live. Remarkable.

    Loved Rodriguez

by AKiki on 4/9/13Beacon Theatre - New York

After seeing 'Searching for Sugarman', I was so excited to see that Rodriguez was touring. What a great evening at The Beacon! Rodriguez put on a great show ... playing both his original songs and some great covers. He seems like a great, down-to-earth man. Wishing him and his family continued happiness and success.

    Rodriguez is the man !!!

by Draidez1 on 4/9/13Beacon Theatre - New York

Not since Elvis has there been the epitome of the word Cool in music! Rodriguez reeks of it ! Why did the music industry rob us of such a talent for so long? Prejudice? I have seen well over 500 concerts in my lifetime(Floyd, Who,Springsteen, U2 etc.)and never have I seen an audience hang on every movement, note and word from a musician like they did for this Giant, and humble all I can say is WOW!!! What a show and a privilege to have been able to find Sugarman! Thank You Rodriguez, and looking forward to more new tunes. Even though you are losing your sight, you have helped us see the light! Yours Truly A Devoted Fan For Life!!!!!!

Good Show. He played almost everything you would want to hear, plus a lot of cool covers. His voice is immaculate and he had pretty good crowd interaction. His backup band is mediocre, but that is not a reason not to go....he was great.
