RODRIGUEZ IN CONCERT:

Forgotten '70s folk hero Sixto Rodriguez finally has the audience he deserves. Enjoying a renewed interest in his music spurred by acclaimed Academy Award-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, Rodriguez released his first music in nearly 30 years in 2012, delighting fans around the world who thought his story ended with 1971 cult favorite Coming From Reality. At his 2013 shows, Rodriguez stunned with new songs from the documentary soundtrack alongside his classic '70s material, proving he's more than worthy of his belated stardom and building excitement for a new album and tour in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Detroit to Mexican immigrant parents, Sixto Rodriguez was named after his position as the sixth child in his family. Dropping out of high school at 16, he focused instead on playing shows in Detroit's various bars and clubs, attracting the eye of producer Harry Balk for his debut 1967 single "I'll Slip Away." Signing to Sussex records a few years later, Rodriguez released his 1970 debut album Cold Fact, quickly following it up with 1971 sophomore album Coming From Reality. Neither album sold well in the US, resulting in his dismissal from the label and retirement from music, but by the mid-‘70s the albums had become hugely popular in Australia and South Africa —completely unbeknownst to Rodriguez. In the late '90s, two South African fans documented their search for Rodriguez, who was rumored to be dead, resulting in 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man. The film took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, leading to a flurry of media attention and a renewed interest in his music. With new material and tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans will have the opportunity to see Rodriguez soak up his second act as he hits the road for a series of highly anticipated concerts.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Rodriguez is amazing! His voice, guitar playing, and song writing are superb. So much respect for this artist."

"Rodriguez was better than expected, and I expected a lot! He played some amazing guitar, sang his heartbreaking poetic lyrics, and surprised us all with some incredibly well-timed corny jokes."

"Rodriguez has perfect pitch!! His music was enjoyable, loved how he mixed it up playing other artists too!! Fun show."

    A tribute to Rodriguez

by BillontheRoad on 8/26/18Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Having only experienced Rodriguez through the documentary Searching for Sugarman and listening to his two albums, I was really looking forward to seeing him in person. It was sad to see how much his health, voice and mind had deteriorated. He had to be helped onto and off the stage. He often repeated himself and his voice would break and was weak. He did give it his best and enjoyed interacting with the audience. Despite all of that I was glad that I attended the concert to pay tribute to Rodriguez, which was a long time coming since he didn't receive the attention he should have when he was much younger and vibrant.

    Rodriguez is a Musical Ghandi

by ConcertLoverII on 8/26/18Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Sitting up-close-and-personal and watching this man's legend unfold on the stage - "Thank you for your patience" - personifies the impact he had on South Africa and freedom for everyone in that nation. I've followed him since we premiered the movie about his life and music at the Cinema Society of San Diego, and just returned from Mabu Vinyl in Cape Town to see where it all began. Though he struggles with 'voice' in his songs, he's not lost his 'voice' in his heart. Touched to tears and have been playing his CDs once again ever since the concert. Thank you, Rodriguez, and your family, for such a blessing. Stay strong!

    Rodriguez at Humphreys

by Sooozi on 8/26/18Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

I wish musicians would just sing their beautiful music and not use the stage for politics...

Poor guy looked like he was on life support. Sound mix was pretty awful. Seats were terrible.

    Rodriguez

by Whitechedda on 8/26/18Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

It appeared Rodriguez enjoyed performing but his mind is writing checks his voice can't cash. It also appears someone was talking to him the whole concert via an earpiece. It was distracting. Love his music. The concert, not so much.

    Disappointing

by Anonymous on 8/26/18Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Definitely not at his best any more, age has caught up with him. Unfortunately I don't think his family realize it yet so they are still parading him out. Left utterly disappointed.

    Legendary music! Unknown gem.

by millrock on 8/20/18Humphry's Concert Hall - San Diego

Rodriguez is an amazing artist that the American public unfortunately undervalues. He should have been one of the greats of his time along with Bob Dylan, but due to the American demographics, politics, and racial discrimination of his upbringing this gem (Rodriguez) was put away to dust in a closet. I am glad that he was found again and is touring, and that I had the chance to see him perform in person. It's all about the music y'all, just the music.

    Rodriguez an "ordinary legend"

by cdtate on 8/19/18Moore Theatre - Seattle

I really enjoyed Rodriguez, seeing him live for the first time. Alone on stage with just his guitar and harmonica in front of a crowd that was easy to please. Once he got rolling he was engaging. fun and sounded just like I imagined. I was surprised with the number of covers he did as I would have preferred him going deeper into his own collection. But, extremely enjoyable nonetheless. He played for just about one hour plus the encore, kind of a short show, but perfect for this old guy. So happy that I saw Rodriguez live!!! I think everyone else there was too.

    Great performance!

Even without AC in the Moore theatre, we had a wonderful time, Rodriguez rocks!

Went for the music. Hated the left wing nonsense

by Casseroling on 8/15/18Moore Theatre - Seattle

We enjoy Rodriguez’s music. He is very talented. We were totally disappointed that he criticized our country, our values, and our president. He thinks we are repressed and should revolt. The message was the part that was revolting.

    Rodriguez - the Legend

by Belaruse on 8/15/18Moore Theatre - Seattle

Rodriguez was spectacular! He brought down the house. So simple and brilliant and sweet. He touched everyone's heart. The music was delicious. His message was inspirational. The young women on stage with him were charming. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. I will remember it forever. If he comes back to Seattle, I will be first in line for a ticket. And the young women who preceded him was wonderful. I will get her cd's. She wowed the audience too. And the venue was perfect. Not a bad seat in the house at the Moore. Very comfortable and lovely. A really fantastic evening.

    Don't go to this Rodriquez!

    by Nayram1 on 8/15/18Moore Theatre - Seattle

The 45 minute opening act was pure agony. It seemed like she sang the same dreary self-absorbed folk song the entire time, but they were actually different. That combined with the fact that she had no stage presence, made me want to scream "fire" to clear the thrater and end the agony. Rodriquez's stage entrance was bizarre. Two hippie women physically helped him on the stage while a child threw rose petals in his path, seriously. Rodriquez sang old 60's and 70's tunes, but few of his own so our group was disappointed. He is very frail and weak. Other than taking time between songs to give us his political views, his performance lacked energy or enthusiasm. All of that, combined with the wooden seats in the theater caused us to leave the performance early.

    Finally found Sugar man!

    by Dalilama007 on 4/18/18The Wilbur - Boston

At 76 years old, Rodriguez certainly surprised his fans! Where his vocals were not as strong as expected, he made up for it with his guitar playing. He never forgot any lyrics! His stage presence was a bit frail given his age. Unfortunately, his drinking did not help his performance. He was helped on stage by his family and he sat on a stool throughout his performance. During the show, his 'trade secret' in his cup certainly made him a bit drunk. It made you feel sad for him while you watched a man trying to resurrect a music career. I'd recommend seeing him if you simply want to say you saw him live. I've seen plenty of 'Legends' perform (Franki Valli, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett) but this was not one of them. He prohibits photos and video for a reason. It was an average performance from an extremely hardworking man trying to give it one last go! You have to respect that! Overall, I enjoyed hearing him play and sing his classic favorites.

    Rodriguez

by zigsster on 4/18/18The Wilbur - Boston

After seeing the documentary -I had to see this guy!! He was charming, but only on stage for about an hour but I understand he is an older gentleman now . I went to pay my respect to an artist that was not given his accolades as he should have been. I didn't care for the warm up venue - possibly just having him tell stories and his music would have been more preferable.

    Good to see a legend

by Anonymous on 4/18/18The Wilbur - Boston

Awesome to see the Legend Rodriguez, AKA Sugar man. His entire story was incredible and his heart is true so it made the show good. On the down side, could someone do a sound check on his guitar and keep from criticizing the president more than once or twice.. we get it.

    Rodriguez

by Supguy on 4/14/18State Theatre - Portland

I was disappointed, he should have kept more to playing and singing than a political wannabe commentator. He was incoherent, continually taking large sips from cups. When he sang and played, his music came through, you forgave all the stage theatrics, but then you had to listen too more. So overall disappointing. I left about 2 songs prior the end, so do not know the final cheer. Many people had left. Lots of old hippes, and I was surprised at how many young folk. The venue had great acoustics and I will certainly check out future concerts.

As a young artist, Rodriguez was such a talented and amazing singer and songwriter who got totally shafted and ripped off by his promoter, and eventually fell into obscurity. Blessedly he was rediscovered a few years ago. Unfortunately for whatever reason, his concert was not only disappointing, but very sad. He spoke more than he sang, and drank something (probably alcohol) consistently throughout his time on stage because much of what he said was a lament about the plight of Mexican Americans given the current political climate, which while totally right on and understandable, became more and more sadly slurred by the end of his one hour concert.
