About

Rodrigo y Gabriela on Tour

Do you want flamenco with your heavy metal? Acid rock with your classical guitars? If so, Rodrigo y Gabriela are at your service. Known for a double-guitar attack that translates heavy-metal power to nylon-stringed classical guitars played with flamenco fury, Rodrigo y Gabriela are openhearted entertainers whose musical passion bridges classical and contemporary styles to create a world of its own. Alone on stage, they evoke the passion and precision of heavy metal — such as Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica — and, more recently, the expansive meditations of vintage Pink Floyd. The Mexico City–based guitar duo toured the United States and Europe in 2019 to support their eighth album, Mettavolution.

Rodrigo y Gabriela in Concert

Mexico City natives Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero have been perfecting their rapid-fire fusion of Latin harmonies and rhythms with rock structure since the 2006 release of Rodrigo y Gabriela, which included acoustic cover versions of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and Metallica's "Orion." After meeting in art school as metal-loving teenagers, the couple forged their musical and emotional alliance while busking through Europe. During an eight-year residence in Galway, Gabriela learned how to transfer the driving bodhran-drum rhythms of Irish folk music to her classical guitar.

The instrumentalists continued to play cover songs and salute their influences on concept albums like 11:11 and 9 Dead Alive. Rodrigo y Gabriela's 2019 release, Mettavolution, was their first in five years. It consists of a handful of original tracks topped off by a 19-minute cover version of "Echoes," the sprawling, subtle and mysterious Pink Floyd epic that took up the entire second side of that band's 1971 album Meddle. The title track of Mettavolution, on the other hand, is a typically dynamic Rodrigo y Gabriela explosion of slaps, strums and rapid-fire runs. The title reflects the duo's belief in evolution through compassion, which here translates into nothing less than sheer rock nirvana.

    They ROCK!

    by ManChink0 on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

They dispelled the truth that doubt two acoustic guitars cannot possibly rock a house. They didn't just ROCK the house; they blew its roof off!!!

    Great Show!

    by jsilva028 on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

This was a phenomenal show! Even the opening act was great. Rodrigo & Gabriela put on a very intimate performance, the music was great, the atmosphere was fun. My only complaint was the guy standing behind me that got a little too close for comfort (I'm a guy).

Rod y Gab has to be seen live!

by AcousticGuitarFan on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

I am not one for getting to places early and fighting for standing room so I can see. Generally I want to hear and feel the music. But with Rod y Gab, you must get close. They have to be seen to be believed!!! Gabriela's hands move so quick and the music that comes from this sounds like more than just an acoustic guitar. And of course with a smile like hers, you won't mind being so close! And Rodrigo plays lead with the best of them. He's so into his music, it's sick. I love it! An absolute must see.

Two of the best guitarists performing today

by nswartze on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

I can't remember the last time I was at a concert where, walking thru a sea of people mezmerized by the understated act on stage, all I could hear was, "how do they produce that sound...that is amazing...she's incredible...I used to think she made the band, now I see it's him." The technical skills of R & G were a sight for sore eyes, and the sound they and their incredible engineers created left crisp, full music lilting thru the air at Terminal 5. Normally a venue I loathe for live music, R & G's amplified small sound was perfect for a venue that allows sound waves to resonate and reverberate against it's massive structure. This performance was perfection in my mind - incredibly talented, dedicated guitarists who know how to work a crowd and have the unbelievable stamina to play an "unplugged" hour and a half flawlessly!

Most innovative band in MANY years.

    by Killingtime23 on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

Rodrigo y Gabriela bring a ferociousness to acoustic guitar playing never seen before. Rock gods with electric guitars couldn't create the fervor that these two do with their instruments, which I think are fused to their bodies. Truly, I think these people are possessed. Their skills are beyond amazing. And what I love most is that their roots are in metal, thrash metal to be exact. And during last night's show when asked if anyone had requests the response was unanimous, ORION. I've never heard if Metallica has commented on their cover of Orion, but I would hope that they'd be flattered.......highly flattered at that. great show, great band, easily one of my favorite concerts and at the tender age of 25, I have seen about 60 concerts from the Monkees to Peter Cetera to Ozzfest, so that's saying something.

One of the best shows ever!

by rodgabfan on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

A couple of years ago, after going to a concert featuring a flamenco guitarist, we searched for some other flamenco musicians and stumbled upon Rodrigo y Gabriela. They were incredible and we loved how they played metal covers. A couple days before the show we saw a small ad that they were playing and decided to get tickets. We were shocked at how far they came in their talent in just a few years. There were so many times while they were playing you just stood there in awe. Gabriela's talent is incomprehensible. And they way that they are able to play off eachother is some real talent. They were great live, releasing an incredible energy to the crowd. I will definitely want to see them again. I'm not sure if Terminal 5 is a good venue for them though. The crowd was frequently talking, at one point Gabriela was speaking and I had no idea what she was saying because people were completely engaged in their own conversation.

    RyG

by scrapbookbug on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

don't know why people pay money to listen to someone play music and then talk the whole time. RyG were amazing, inspiring, wondrous, phenomenal, extraordinary, sensational, incredible, like sex or a religious experience. Possibly both. I felt privileged to be there, to experience them loving their music and feeding off each others energy and the audiences energy.

One of the best show this year.

    by billmweber100 on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

Rodrigo y Gabriela were very excited to be back in NYC. They kept the audience involved with hand clapping and chanting accompaniments.

    Too $hort

by Bardvark on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

The show ended by 10:30 p.m., which is an egregious short-change by my standards. An extra opener would've been nice, but there wasn't even an encore performance to fill up the time. Otherwise R y G tore it up nicely.

Rodrigo & Gagriela was the best to date

by SepNice on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

I don't even know where to begin. Rodrigo & Gabriela were Amazing as usual. The duo have such a dynamic chemistry and feed off not only themsleves but the fans as well. The show was more then amazing... watching Gabriela use her hand on the guitar is so impressive but seeing it live gives you even a better appreciation for her style and technique. As always the two did not disappoint. This tour is a must see. Fi you get a chance I strongly suggest you catch the show. Even if your not a fan of the duo and like the Gypsy's (Gypsy Kings), you will LOVE this group.

    great performers - horrible audience

by jwbklyn on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

What a great duo and what a great heartfelt performance. Too bad it was ruined for many of us in the audience by idiots talking loudly throughout the whole show. Why do they buy tickets? Why do they show up? It's a concert not a bar.

by Carlosg on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

I saw them live about 3 years ago when they first came out in a smaller venue, and they were GREAT! This time around they were AMAZING, you can tell they have grown as musicians and as performers. The sound, the show was just AWESOME!

Rodrigo y Gabriela - Simply Amazing

    by Toro1 on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

The show can be summed up into one word: AMAZING! They are both so talented. I kept having to remind myself that this incredible music I was listening to was coming from two guitars, that's it: Unbelievable is what that is. I could feel my dad's spirit near me, as he used to play the spanish guitar and had a passion for it, as I do now, thanks to him.

    Rodrigo y Gabriela

by KenVeLo on 9/17/09Terminal 5 - New York

OMGGGG. I have everyone of their songs and play them nonstop. But what i saw last night was indescribable. they were IIIINNNNNCREDIBLE!! the crowd got so riled up at moments it was simply beautiful to watch. These two have mastered the guitar that it simply looks as if they're making love to the guitar. you have to see them at least once before you die.
