Rodney Crowell is an excellent live performer and an exceptional songwriter. The musicians in his band are very talented. Watching Steuart Smith jam on his guitar in such a small venue is a treat. They played a long list of songs from a cross section of Crowell’s albums; including several from the new one, Tarpaper Sky. There are a lot of great songs on that album. They played for 2 hours. Crowell added in an extra encore because he liked how interactive & responsive the audience was during the show. Bonus! Shannon McNally opened. She is really good.
Had never been to the Sinclair before and was told it was standing room only except for a few tables in the balcony. To my surprise, they had seats set up on the floor. I got one right up front. Shannon McNally, Mississippi-based bluesy folky rocky singer- songwriter and guitarist opened with a short set that could have gone on longer as far as I was concerned. She has a beautiful voice and was accompanied by a guitarist and mandolin player. Crowell and his band opened with Earthbound and moved through a mix of old and new songs. He was in a great mood and seemed tp be enjoying himself. Highlight was his guitar player, Steurt Smith, who is a member of the Eagles. He is a wizard. Crowell is a magnificent intelligent songwriter, the kind who can't get played on insipid country radio. All in all, a very nice show in a good venue.
The legendary Rodney Crowell brought his A-level best to The Sinclair. Seeing him and Steuart Smith in such an intimate venue made it one of the best shows of the year! The new album is some of his best work in years, and the band on this night complimented Rodney nicely.
This was a great show. I liked his opening act too!
We enjoyed Rodney Crowell's relaxed story telling and hot playing. He performed standards as well as several new songs from his latest album Kin. Jed Hughes is a remarkably talented instrumentalists and singer. Would have given this 5 stars but I couldn't overlook the fact that we were sitting on hard folding chairs. This wasn't the artists fault but I did tend to go numb!
Rodney proved why is he is a legend. Jedd is an amazing guitarist. Lots of fun!
Once again Rodney Crowell has organized an intimate night of music and the spoken word. I cried. I laughed. I have seen many a great gathering of musicians( Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Tim Buckley, Janis Joplin, etc.) and this rates in my top ten! I can't get enough of the heartfelt stories and level of musicianship. Thank you Rodney, Mary, and Steuart!
It was an outstanding performance. We had a super time. Very refreshing to hear the new material and look forward to seeing them again, hopefully soon. Mary Karr's poetry and stories were interesting and fun to hear. Steauart Smith's guitar work is simply extraordinary. The night was fantastic.
Rodney and Mary put on a show that would be hard for anyone to top. I've been to concerts that came to town in tour buses and semi-trucks that don't compare to the two guitars, the showmanship and talent I had the pleasure of seeing. From open to close the audience was into this great show. Hope Rodney and Mary will come back to Portland allowing my wife I the pleasure of seeing them again. I guess I shouldn't leave Steuart Smith out. One of the best guitar players I have seen. His guitar lit the performance up blending with the voice and guitar of Rodney. If you ever get a chance to see Rodney and Mary perform don't miss it. Everything about the show deserves 5 stars.
Excellent show in every respect. Rodney was his usual relaxed, personable self, Mary was adorable, fun, and a gorgeous babe, the music was wonderful, and Stewart Smith was jaw-dropping amazing. If you get a chance to see this show do not miss it.
Outstanding show from a professional entertainer. Like his last book/music tour having his poet, novelist co-writer on the stage was novel and well delivered. Beyond that, Rodney's voice live and non-produced is strong, pleasant, and very expressive. The new material was well done. Rodney's encore by staying on the stage solo was a very nice touch. And of course we must give strong praise to Steuart Smith, simply one of the very best, virtuoso guitarists in existence. Seeming effortless, smooth, versatile, and dazzling on every solo and supporting accompaniment . Steuart Smith is not to be missed anytime he is within commuting distance.
I have seen Rodney several times in the past and enjoyed this show more than usual. I liked the acoustic sound, musicians were all extremely talented and the choice of songs was terrific! This is a great place to see live music. Good seats, very intimate and reasonably priced.
Rodney Crowell came out very confidently with his band including stand-up bass, electric guitar, and fiddle. He made B.B. Kings seem very intimate along with each song he sang.
Rodney Crowell is a country music great, and, as he said in his show, though he was joking, an original. Mixing readings from his book, a memoir of growing up, with his music gave a unique richness to the evening. Lending his voice to his prose in oral reading brings a dimension to the prose that the reader might miss. His singing voice maintains its resonance and depth, always kind of amazing to me. Humor and seriousness blend in his lyrics and his music. This guy is simply real and great. He said Emmylou Harris and he are planning an album and planning to reassemble the Hot Band. Reserve my tickets now!
We have been fans for a very long time, more years than I care to admit. Rodney played to a small gathering. Weather and probably not enough promotion kept the crowd very small but those of us that came out in the rain were rewarded for our effort. It was like having Rodney in our living room, the gathering was that small and intimate. His songwriting is insightful and runs a wide gamut. His singing and guitar playing were masterful. It's so enjoyable to see a performer perform, without enhancements, makeup, canned backup, etc. Rodney delivered a great and honest performance and we are happy we finally got to see him live. It definitely won't be our last time!
Outstanding show, Played with great guitarist/singer and acoustic bass backup. Very diverse set lots of newer tunes will older classics later in set. Excellent sound!
Rodney was great, entertaining and included two great musicians to accompany him. As always, Rodney brings it, incredible voice and song writing. Kevin
Fabulous venue, very comfortable, great sound and terrific entertainers. Would definitely go to the Uptown Napa Theatre real soon!
Not really that familiar with either artist before the show and i was happy that I drove all the way from Guerneville. The theatre is a great place to see any and all venues as all seats seem like good seats. Sound was also very good. The blend of James McMurtry & Rodney Crowell were a great mix of good guitar playing and personalities. Enjoyed the show. Thanks S
