Roberto Carlos Live in Concert

Brazilian pop-rock trailblazer Roberto Carlos is known to many as "the King of Latin Music." With a career spanning more than half a century, Carlos has sold more than 140 million albums globally and is considered one of the most influential pop artists in Brazil and the world. With the help of co-writer and frequent collaborator Erasmo Carlos, Roberto Carlos has written more than three dozen Top 10-charting singles.

Born to a lower middle-class family in 1941, Carlos began playing the guitar and piano as a child. At just 9 years old, he performed for the first time at a children's show broadcast by Rádio Cachoeiro, where he won first prize and became a regular performer.

As a teenager, Carlos moved to Rio de Janeiro and formed a band originally called the Snacks, which was later renamed the Sputniks. In the late '50s, Carlos went solo and performed bossa nova in the style of Brazilian singer João Gilberto. When his first full-length album, 1961's Louco Por Você (Crazy for You), failed to achieve commercial success, Carlos switched back to rock music.

As a pop/rock musician, Carlos drew influence from then-popular American and British acts such as Little Richard, Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles. He eventually became the face of "Jovem Guarda" (Young Guard), which started as a TV show hosted by Carlos but eventually became a catchphrase for a Brazilian musical movement influenced by the Western midcentury rock and roll wave. Carlos' 1964 album, É Proibido Fumar, especially exemplified this upbeat sound and style, also known in Brazil as iê-iê-iê ("yeah-yeah-yeah").

In the late '60s, Carlos began to pivot his artistry to specialize more in love songs. Along with close collaborator Erasmo Carlos, Roberto Carlos penned now-famous hits such as "Detalhes," "Sua Estupidez," "Jesus Cristo," and "Debaixo dos Caracóis dos Seus Cabelos," earning him Grammy accolades and top chart placements in Latin America. Carlos' love songs became especially popular in neighboring Argentina, and by the '70s, he had become the best-selling Brazilian musician in history.

In 1988, Carlos won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance, plus several Latin Grammys in the early 2000s. In 2015, the Latin Recording Academy honored him with the prestigious Person of the Year award. In 2009, Carlos celebrated his 50th anniversary as a performer, touring through North and South America to honor the achievement alongside fans. More recently, Carlos released his 2018 Spanish-language album Amor Sin Límite, which featured duets with Jennifer Lopez ("Llegaste") and Alejandro Sanz ("Esa Mujer").

  • Amazing show but awful seats

by Ana Borges on 5/4/22Rating: 5 out of 5

Roberto Carlos still amazing! The place was nice and easy to park but there are no space for the legs. I’m 5’8 and my knees are so bad until now. I remembered when I went to his show with my parents. Really good memories.

by Rosita on 5/3/22DAR Constitution Hall - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The Roberto Carlos Concert was spectacular. Too bad there was an incident and Roberto Carlos stopped singing. When security took care of the problem, the concert continued, but Roberto Carlos was aware of the situation. How embarrassing!

  • Roberto Carlos Concert

    by Trziste15 on 5/3/22DAR Constitution Hall - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This was an outstanding concert. It was great hearing so many of this great artist's hits. The lyrics and the music hit home still today. The lighting and sound was great. Often it is hard to hear the performers words because they get drowned out by the music - not in this case! Loved it!

  • The good, the bad, and the ugly

by Swedish Viking on 5/3/22DAR Constitution Hall - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The Good - Robert gave an excellent performance and everyone enjoyed the concert. The Bad - Concert was at DAR. Internet stated you needed to show covid card but upon arrival... you did not need to provide the covid card but had to have a mask on. In-consistant messaging. The Ugly - The security guard in front of the stage was aggressive and confrontational to the audience with one member of the audience being tackled and thrown out because he did not sit down quickly enough.

  • A Brazilian Legend

by Mariano on 5/3/22DAR Constitution Hall - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

No doubt he fascinates Latin American fans for decades. I was a little disappointed with the audience behavior. Carlos had to stop the show for a while. He signs his ballads enchanting ladies.

  • Wonderful, Great!!!

by Gaby on 5/3/22DAR Constitution Hall - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Roberto Carlos was awesome!!! The security in the venue was so bad

  • Loved Roberto Carlos….Didn’t care for the venue

by MVB on 5/3/22DAR Constitution Hall - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

He was excellent!! His voice has not changed in spite of his age. I loved listening to him. He sang for 2 hrs and hardly took a break, if any. The venue was ok as far as it being small and intimate but there was no food to buy, only chips and drinks. The chips cost $3, which was a ripoff, because they were the small kind that you can get like 18 in a whole box that costs $9. The sodas were $5 a small plastic cup that didn’t even pour out the whole CAN that you paid for. And the cocktails were $14-$15 for a small plastic cup as well. I get that food and drinks at venues cost more but dang, these prices were ridiculous for what you were getting. DAR Constitution needs to do better. Secondly, the parking was a big problem. All the public parking near the venue were closed. We had to walk 15-20 mins from where we parked to the venue. It was crazy! This was my 1st time at this venue and I doubt I’ll be returning.
