About

Roberto Carlos Live in Concert

Brazilian pop-rock trailblazer Roberto Carlos is known to many as "the King of Latin Music." With a career spanning more than half a century, Carlos has sold more than 140 million albums globally and is considered one of the most influential pop artists in Brazil and the world. With the help of co-writer and frequent collaborator Erasmo Carlos, Roberto Carlos has written more than three dozen Top 10-charting singles.

Born to a lower middle-class family in 1941, Carlos began playing the guitar and piano as a child. At just 9 years old, he performed for the first time at a children's show broadcast by Rádio Cachoeiro, where he won first prize and became a regular performer.

As a teenager, Carlos moved to Rio de Janeiro and formed a band originally called the Snacks, which was later renamed the Sputniks. In the late '50s, Carlos went solo and performed bossa nova in the style of Brazilian singer João Gilberto. When his first full-length album, 1961's Louco Por Você (Crazy for You), failed to achieve commercial success, Carlos switched back to rock music.

As a pop/rock musician, Carlos drew influence from then-popular American and British acts such as Little Richard, Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles. He eventually became the face of "Jovem Guarda" (Young Guard), which started as a TV show hosted by Carlos but eventually became a catchphrase for a Brazilian musical movement influenced by the Western midcentury rock and roll wave. Carlos' 1964 album, É Proibido Fumar, especially exemplified this upbeat sound and style, also known in Brazil as iê-iê-iê ("yeah-yeah-yeah").

In the late '60s, Carlos began to pivot his artistry to specialize more in love songs. Along with close collaborator Erasmo Carlos, Roberto Carlos penned now-famous hits such as "Detalhes," "Sua Estupidez," "Jesus Cristo," and "Debaixo dos Caracóis dos Seus Cabelos," earning him Grammy accolades and top chart placements in Latin America. Carlos' love songs became especially popular in neighboring Argentina, and by the '70s, he had become the best-selling Brazilian musician in history.

In 1988, Carlos won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance, plus several Latin Grammys in the early 2000s. In 2015, the Latin Recording Academy honored him with the prestigious Person of the Year award. In 2009, Carlos celebrated his 50th anniversary as a performer, touring through North and South America to honor the achievement alongside fans. More recently, Carlos released his 2018 Spanish-language album Amor Sin Límite, which featured duets with Jennifer Lopez ("Llegaste") and Alejandro Sanz ("Esa Mujer").

  • PORTUGUESE, PORRA!

by Miami Weiss on 6/29/24Rating: 3 out of 5

Roberto is the King, but the King has failed his native Brazilian people. The concert should have been titled "Robert Carlos en Espanol"as to avoid deceiving his loyal Brazilian fans. Songs in Portuguese: O Calhambeque Jesus Cristo Medley of other songs which you can't quite discern the exact language, let's just say "Portunol"and leave it at that. That notwithstanding, RC is amazing any way you slice and dice. He's the King of Brazilian Brega and it is still worth going to the concert, once you set your ears to the right language. With love to all!

Band was great and sounds great love but he was done in an hour so that was super disappointing as he barely sang any songs

  • Excellent

Excellent, started on time, great show overall. RC sang all his major hits

  • Language....

by DBR on 6/26/24Rosemont Theatre - RosemontRating: 3 out of 5

There was no mention that the concert would be in Spanish, even Roberto Carlos being Brazilian. Although RC is always awesome, it was frustrating for a Brazilian expecting to see your idol singing in your native language.

Roberto Carlos is a classic and his concerts are always an amazing experience, especially for those who grew up listening to his timeless songs in Brazil. I have been to his concert at Rosemont Theater twice, and I will definitely go back if/when he returns. His performances always bring me good memories from my childhood, adolescence and of my family members who still reside in Brazil. Having said that, I would like to make a kind request/suggestion. I suggest Roberto Carlos consider singing more songs in Portuguese and addressing the audience in Portuguese (not only in Spanish) at least a few times during his concerts in Chicago. I don’t know if he does the same in other cities in the U.S. where there are “official” Brazilian communities. I am aware that the presence of a large Spanish-speaking population in Chicagoland, especially Mexicans, who are huge fans of him, may be the reason why he chooses to speak only Spanish during his performance and mostly sing Spanish versions of his songs. However, there is also a large number of loyal Brazilian fans who reside not only in Chicagoland, but all over the Midwest, and many of them travel long distances from other Midwest states (e.g., Indiana, Wisconsin, the Dakotas and Minneapolis) only to attend his concerts. Portuguese and Spanish are mutually intelligible, and thus both can be understood by Brazilians and Hispanics, so I do not see a problem if he speaks some Portuguese once in a while. On the other hand, most of the lyrics in Spanish are quite different from their Portuguese versions, and thus Brazilians are paying as much as their Hispanic counterparts, but not being able to have a full experience. In addition, although he has been a very popular artist among the Hispanic community, most of the concert attendees do not know his lyrics/songs by heart, especially the newer songs, which is totally understandable because there are other traditional singers from their own culture/countries that they know more about. In contrast, his Brazilains fans sing along very loudly when he finally sings a song (or a short part of) in Portuguese. For comparison, it is like Julio Iglesias (who has recorded albums in Portuguese) speaking/performing in Miami only in Portuguese because there is a large Portuguese-speaking population there. His Spanish-speaking fans attending the concert would be frustrated as well. I know a lot of Brazilian people who would love to attend RC’s concerts in Chicago, but shy away from doing so because they know RC will be speaking and performing mostly in Spanish. If/When RC performs in a Spanish-speaking country (i.e., Mexico, Guatemala, Spain), it is acceptable that he favors Spanish over his native language. However, this is the U.S., a diverse country made up of a wide variety of people from different language/cultural backgrounds, including Brazilian Portuguese speakers. What’s more, your Brazilian fans who live here deserve your attention and respect, RC, at least 50% percent of your concert. After all, you are KING Roberto Carlos only in Brazil. Your Brazilian fans will definitely be more encouraged to buy a ticket to see you next time you are here. “Obrigada” from a real fan!

by LUNAGITANA on 6/24/24Kia Forum - InglewoodRating: 3 out of 5

I used to see Roberto Carlos every year when He come to Los Angeles CA. And all those years have been ok, until this year, First issue started when even I purchased the first row to see clear, unfortunately the cameras from the Kia Forum they blocked completely my view, I had to move a little closer to the one next to me to be able to see, bothering the one next to me,and other issue was I don't understand why in this year, Roberto Carlos was singing and speaking in Portuguese,He use to do maybe 1 or 2 songs and the past shows, but this time he spoke more in Portuguese than Spanish and the most audience was Spanish speakers. So bad.
