About

Jazz pianist Robert Glasper's booming career has taken two different tracks. There's the Robert Glasper Trio, which is his more traditional acoustic ensemble dating to the early '00s featuring drummer Chris Dave and bassist Vicente Harper, and The Robert Glasper Experiment, which defies easy categorization. "Black music is the house that has many rooms," Glasper said in the label bio for the Robert Glasper Experiment's 2013 album, Black Radio 2. "Black people have invented so many dope genres that everyone loves: Jazz, blues, gospel, R&B, rock, hip-hop, and the list goes on. I'm just visiting all those rooms." The first Robert Glasper Experiment album, 2012's Black Radio, fused elements of jazz, R&B, and hip-hop, and teamed Glasper's group with guests including Ledisi, Erykah Badu, Lupe Fiasco, and Bilal. The combination proved a hit with both jazz and R&B fans, and won a Grammy for Best R&B Album. Glasper ventured further into the hip-hop and soul realm on Black Radio 2, which features guests including Common, Norah Jones, Snoop Dogg, and Jill Scott. Glasper and his band toured large clubs and theaters in 2013, getting kudos for their solid musicianship and  diverse repertoire from both critics and from fans who bought tickets.

    VOCODER OVERDOSE!!

by DFITZEE on 6/5/13Gramercy Theatre - New York

The good news is Robert Glasper and his band are incredible musicians; individually and collectively. The bad news is that Monday's performance did not show what this band can do. After a two hour delay; I was not expecting an evening of songs that included Casey Benjamin singing through the vocoder on EVERY song. This was bizarre and frustrating; to say the least. The only song that was the least bit enjoyable was when Jeannine(?) Bailey came out and brought us back to the days of the early female jazz singers; what a treat!! I guess that's the potential when attending a jazz show; improvising is part of the history. One or two songs maybe; but all night?? What makes it sting a little more is that my wife and I caught Robert about five years ago; performing at the theater of Columbia University; and was a fan from that night on. Next time Robert; please give us more of what we came for; and less of that damn vocoder!!

    hated it.

by neveragainrobertglasper on 6/5/13Gramercy Theatre - New York

The first DJ was good. The second one was awful. Robert and his band were a autotuned hot mess! Plus, they didn't go onto stage until almost 10:00pm. I was angry by the time they finally made it onto stage and to have to listen to that irritating autotuned voice over was insulting. Never again!

    Robert Glasper was wonderful!!!

by jscogdell on 5/8/13Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

I had no idea he was so funny and the music was GREAT. I was a little disappointed none of the artists on his CD was there. I know they can't ALL be at ALL his concerts, but one would have been nice. Other than that, I did enjoy myself.

Great benefit and show! I want more! Set list included all of Black Radio as well as crowd favorites. I need to attend another Glasper concert that includes older hits from other albums as well.

Awesome Show to Support a awesome cause!

by SirGreendown on 5/7/13Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

The show was great from beginning to end.... Robert can easily go into comedy after he is done turning the world on to a new era in contemporary jazz music. I laughed and was also moved by all the talent and musicianship on that stage.

Excellent concert, real music, each musician was very talented in their own right! I highly recommend anyone who loves music and live bands to see Robert Glasper live. They sound better than the album and the album is a solid 10!

    the new face of music

by pantrydiva on 10/23/12Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUS

WOW! The Robert Glasper Experiment is FABULOUS! It's a wonderful thing to see what the new kids on the block are doing with music- SO EXCITING! The COMPLEXITY and ease of blending various music genres is impressive. Open mindedness is a must! Robert's playfulness offsets his mastery of musianship, which made him personable from any seat in the house! The Lincoln Theater is a newly renovated, BEAUTIFUL and intimate venue, perfect for these kinds of events.

    Great music by incredible musicians

    by Seymour3647 on 10/14/12Birchmere - Alexandria

The venues sound man did not do the band justice as the sound was muffled at times. The musicians especially the drummer had incredible skill and delivery. Lots of auto tune and a singer would have been a nicer touch but Robert should carizma a sense of humor and connected with the audience as he played. You should see this show if you truly love live music in an intimate setting . Well done Robert! Seymour

Robert Glasper was the best concert in years

by ladyjedidc on 10/13/12Birchmere - Alexandria

This was my first experience in seeing Robert Glasper live. I purchased his CD based on the NY Times music review. I love the CD but was so impressed by his talent and sheer mastery of music. The concert was intimate and engaging. He held the audience's attention and played with our emotions and senses with each song. I recommend this show to friends and family. I will see him again if he is back in the DC area.

Wanted to see more of Chrisette & Musiq Soulchild

by MusicLoverATL on 3/7/12Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

I was overjoyed to see Chrisette and Musiq make an appearance! Glasper is an amazing artist. However, the show started more than an hour late. DJ Kemit was there at least to get the party started. One of the bandmembers was using the vocorder( Auto-Tune sounding machine) and he used it just about on every song which became somewhat annoying after a while. I wish Chrisette and Musiq were utilized more. In all it was a good show but the show could have been a lot tighter with transitions because it seems like they weren't sure what they wanted to do.
