The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • Even better after all these years!!

by Jahlove on 3/1/10Fitz Casino Tunica - RobinsonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Robert Cray in concert about 25 years ago, and I couldn't believe it that he's even better now! I smiled the entire two hours! He played a good mix of the old and new music, and Chicken in the Kitchen in person is so reminiscent of the old blues men who used to play on the street in the Delta- how can misery make you happy and make you feel old and young at the same time?

  • Robert Cray was amazing!

by GAdk on 3/1/10Fitz Casino Tunica - RobinsonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Really enjoyed the show. Very talented muscians. Robert puts his heart and soul into his music. The keyboardest was excellent too. I understand he's a native Memphian. Overall it was an excellent show. I see that you are asking for photos below, but the security guard kept telling everyone to stop taking photos. I don't know why. We have attended concerts at all the other casinos in Tunica and all of them allowed pictures. It's the memories that we wanted with our phone cameras, etc.

CDs don't do him justice! His voice and guitar talent is over the top. Must see to really appreciate this band. Saenger Theater in Mobile is the bomb.

  • Robert Cray Band was groovin!!

by GroovinLady on 2/22/10Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray is so smooth. Love the guitar sounds he can coax out of his instrument. Also, isn't it great to be able to understand the vocals?! He really knows how to go from quiet to screamin. Keyboardist was also fantastic. Hadn't seen Robert Cray since many years ago at the Paul M. Mountain Winery in Saratoga, FL. He sure keeps it real! Saenger is a great venue for Robert's playing. Video production didn't interfere with the set at all.

It was a real treat to see a real superstar in Mobile! Robert is one of the best Blues musicians around. His performance was amazing! I had seen him perform several years back but he seems to get better with time! Just put me on the mail list for tickets everytime he is in town!

Excellent sound, excellent set, excellent band backing him. I was impressed with the playing, the vocals and the genuine feel that the band liked what they were doing. I would go and see him again very soon.

I have always loved his music....like a fine wine...he seems to get better, and more pasionate. His stories in the songs resonate with this 50ish guy. I could see him again tonight and love it. Keep it coming Robert.

  • Robert Cray Band is Awesome!!

by ZaleNagler on 9/17/09Wonder Ballroom - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I grew up listening to Robert Cray and attended several concerts of his. To go to another concert so many years later, was fascinating and enjoyable. It brought back so many good times.

  • Robert Cray was classic blues, venue was fantastic

by msfreud on 9/14/09Wonder Ballroom - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great surprise to have Terry Robb open, and his guitar work was as usual superb. When Robert Cray and his band took the stage, we were treated to even more fantastic guitar work, plus terrific backup from his band. His voice was just as clear and gorgeous in person as it is on CD. The crowd was mellow and polite, so it was a real treat to be right up front and not get pushed and shoved around. Great vibe, great band, great crowd and great venue - a perfect night!

  • Robert Cray another town another show

by Yarddude on 9/13/09Wonder Ballroom - PortlandRating: 3 out of 5

26th time we have seen Bob... he does a nice show that makes for a good evening. We go because he was the first artist my wife and I went to see so for us it is a time machine. He did about 4 or 5 songs from the new album - his 21st one - and they were well received by the crowd. The venue - Wonder Ballroom leaves a bit to be desired. What is the deal with venues that don't put chairs on the main floor - what do we look to be 20 years old??? Geez....

  • Robert Cray Band does not disappoint!

    by Pattycake999 on 9/12/09Wonder Ballroom - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

As usual, the Robert Cray Band is worth every penny. Really loved the Wonder Ballroom, too.

  • Unforgettable!

by Maggiemcclel on 9/12/09Wonder Ballroom - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Okay, if you've never seen the Robert Cray Band, you've got to get off your butt and go do it! It is just plain ol "feel good" music that will get you up on your feet and dancing! I've been listening to this band for decades and have seen them before, but this time was really special for me, as I was right there at the stage and have never before had an experience like this, ever. The Wonder Ballroom in Portland was the perfect venue. Bob and the guys performed many new songs from their new CD, "THIS TIME" and they were fantastic! I purchased the CD there at the show, and have not stopped listening to it. "That's what keeps me rockin'" written by drummer, Tony, is a real energetic, fun piece that I love. "I Can't Fail" is Bob's creation, and really gets to me, as does "Forever Goodbye" by Bob and Sue.....(way to go, girl!) :o) At any rate, you just can't go wrong at a Robert Cray concert. I walked outa there with my battery fully charged......thanks guys!

They played at a venue in Portland where I had to stand for over 3 hours during entire concert but it was well worth it. First time attending one of their concerts. Loved his voice and the entire band.

This was the second time for me to have the pleasure of seeing the Robert Cray Band live, and it was worth every mile of my 525 mile drive to get there. The amphitheatre was a perfect venue to see such an incredible performer. I will see him again, if I have to drive a thousand miles next time!! Thanks for a great time to everyone involved!!

The performers were excellent and I loved the venue (this was my first visit). However, the sound was a little muddy and the lighting was way too dim with a poor color content.

I have been listening to the Robert Cray Band for over 10 years and this band is totally awesome. When I went to Iraq as a civilian contractor 4 years ago, I slept with his music in my ear every night. It's that soothing!
