The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • Cray at BB's Club NYC

by refuse2growup on 4/1/10BB King's House of Blues - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I caught Mr Cray with his amazing back-up band (he must be able to pull together the best session men availalbe) at BB's Club in TS NYC. He hasn't lost a step and is a living legend. Maybe underrated for his voice but I must say, I was there with two pretty finicky ladies and they thought he sang like velvet. Guitar licks are hardly matched, with a unique style. I first saw Robert Cray in Burlington VT, I think it was 1990 or so. He's incredible, all of his music is original, maybe one cover tune in the night's performance.

  • Robert Cray @ the Crowne Plaza Ballroom.

by Quickshot on 3/25/10Berks Jazz Fest - ReadingRating: 3 out of 5

I really like Robert Cray. I've heard him live before. This venue, Crowne Plaza Ballroom, is less then desirable. Seating too tight, my partner couldn't see, the acoustics were less than desirable.

  • Robert Cray is amazing

by MonkeyBug on 3/25/10Berks Jazz Fest - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

As soon as that man sings I get goose bumps. And then there's his guitar struming. Wow! It was my second time seeing him and my husband's first. About 5 mins. after the show started, he said Robert Cray was already on his list to see again. Didn't take long!!

  • Short...., but oh so sweet!

by Pegee on 3/25/10Berks Jazz Fest - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray is like fine wine....he just keeps getting better with age. Loved the new stuff, would have liked a few more of the old...Could have listened for another hour. My only complaint: The seats were way too close together.......

  • Young Bob Hasn't Lost a Thing

by mickeyv on 3/25/10Berks Jazz Fest - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray at the Crowne Ballroom in Reading, PA was so wonderful. The only thing I wish was that he played longer -- forever. He did some old classics and some things from his newer albums (ha - cd's or whatever). The hospitality at the Jazz Festival was way above my expectations -- we will be looking for those tie-dye shirts on e-bay or Craigslist -- Medium will be fine. Wouldn't hesitate to buy tickets for another event. Was beautiful. Young Bob, you haven't lost a bit in your vocals, and of course, your guitar was spectacular as always. That dude on the keyboards was incredible -- keep that band together, as was perfect. The entire band was incredible (looking for some adjectives that would come close to cutting it). We felt we died and gone to heaven. Thank you!!!!!

  • Robert Cray Band exceeded expetations

by Christalline on 3/25/10Berks Jazz Fest - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

Wow! What talent! Robert Cray is gifted, charismatic and I just love him and his music. The other musicians are quite talented. The keyboardist--double wow!

  • This guy and his band are still jamming!

by Wojorisen on 3/25/10Berks Jazz Fest - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

Never cared for blues or jazz until I heard this guy. Based on last nights performance, he and his band still have it. Cray is exceptional and always refreshing to listen to. Also, the Berks Jazz Fest people really did a good job facilitating this show in Reading, PA.

  • Excellent night of blues

by Blueshoundgirlfriend on 3/25/10Berks Jazz Fest - ReadingRating: 4 out of 5

For a berks county event (usually a ridiculous ordeal) this was a really surprisingly good time. I am not a fan of having alcohol at events but the way that the Crowne handled it was very nice because it really limited the over intoxication factor and security was active without ruining the experience. The sound was well done at the venue and the seating was fairly intimate for the concert. The band was excellent and played a great set. They interacted with the audience enough for everyone to feel that the concert was personalized without being too audience driven. I was not a fan of the band prior to attending but I had a wonderful time and would definately go again if the opportunity presented itself.

  • Robert Cray was as good as advertised!!

    by treetop69 on 3/25/10Berks Jazz Fest - ReadingRating: 4 out of 5

I've followed Robert Cray's career for years; this was my first opportunity to see him live. What a performer! Equal parts genius on guitar and vocals. I will not miss chance to see him again!

  • Robert Cray Band is a must see

    by bluesharem5 on 3/25/10Berks Jazz Fest - ReadingRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray put on a fantastic show in Reading. We always make sure to see him every time he is in the area. He sang each song with so much passion.

  • Robert Cray Tasty

Excellent Show, Great Blues, Good Vocals, Would see him again in a NY minute

  • virtuoso guitarwork

by zf1010 on 3/22/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen Robert before a few times but he seems to be coming into his own. Without a new record to plug he wove together an eclectic set from his back catalog and performed it beautifully. He sees to be in ecstasy when he plays and I found it contagious.

  • Cray never disappoints!

by ViergangFuchs on 3/21/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

A top-notch 90 minute set from Mr. Cray including "Smoking Gun", "Time Makes Two", "Our Last Time", "Phone Booth", and a complete selection of songs from the new album. Cray switches between his signature Strat and a Custom-Shop-looking sunburst throughout the set.

  • RCB was great!!

by dom7399 on 3/21/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

The Robert Cray Band put on a magnificant performance at B.B. King's in Times Square NYC. The acoustics were good in the smaller venue in the heart of NYC. Robert Cray was extemely entertaining and lively.

  • Robert Cray band seriously rocked!

by Jazzymike on 3/20/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I hadn't seen Cray in over 20 years, but he looked and sounded as fresh as he did back then. His playing has only improved and the rhythm section was flawless. His tunes actually sounded better than they do on the CDs.

  • Robert Cray still going strong!

by MentalFloss on 3/2/10Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 4 out of 5

Robert Cray band sounded great, with RC playing some mean guitar tabs to compliment his soul searching lyrics. This was a great venue to listen to the band play their legendary songs. Key board action was the razor's edge. Saenger Theatre in Mobile pulled in some great talent! I hope they keep this momentum up.

  • Robert Cray Band Rocks the House

by beanstalk on 3/2/10Fitz Casino Tunica - RobinsonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Robert Cray on Austin City Limits many years ago and became an instant fan. While watching ACL, I jotted down his name and went to the music store the next day and purchased 3 CDs. His music has been spinnning in our home ever since. This was the second time we saw the Robert Cray Band live and again, they rocked the house. These 4 people walk on the stage, wave to the audiance then get down to business.....it's all about the music, no fancy props, lighting, fireworks etc....just the best blues one could ever wish for. Robert Cray is a great guitarist, in the class with Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck. The other band members were great as well, key board player was amazing, as was the sexy little base player and athletic drummer. Overall, in my opinion the show was simply the best. Judging from the audiance's reaction, other's would definately agree. The people sitting nearest to us had never seen him before and after the show, all of them were in awe and said they wanted his music.

  • Smooth

by MWRfromMs on 3/1/10Fitz Casino Tunica - RobinsonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Great show, knew Robert Cray had a great voice but was totally blow away by his guitar play. Better live than cd. If you get a chance, make a point to go see him. Worth it!

  • Keeping the blues alive

by Gabor on 3/1/10Fitz Casino Tunica - RobinsonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray put on a great show Feb. 27 at the Fitzgerald Casino in Robinsonville, Miss., where the great Robert Johnson grew up. Perhaps not too many people in the audience made the connection, but it was a real treat to see the blues played some 80 years later where Johnson learned to play the guitar. Thank you, Fitzgerald, for bringing a class act to the casino at a fair price. Thanks for keeping the blues alive. Bring more blues acts, please.

  • Outstanding Performance

by Anonymous on 3/1/10Fitz Casino Tunica - RobinsonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

First time to see Robert Cray Band and we were blown away. Robert is a fantastic guitar player and singer and he has surrounded himself with an outstanding band. My wife and I really enjoyed the entire show, just one great song after another. I would recommend this show to anyone who remotely likes blues.
