The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • Cray's funk and tight show

by rowrunz on 6/9/10Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

Incredible Robert Cray was undeniably locked in for an outstanding performance. Perfect Blend of amazing guitar skills pared perfectly with a dynamic and soul filled voice. His range and talent was there to send the musical message not just to demonstrated capabilities. It all tied together at a great venue. Very little interchange except polite thanks for the crowd. I was a bit disappointed that some folks were more interested in their own cheers when they brought the music to a whisper. Always have been a fan from the first time I heard him played on a Chicago Radio station 10 years ago. If you get a chance to see this one of a kind band, don't miss the chance

  • Dynamite performace by Robert Cray

    by NYE2012 on 6/8/10Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

Simply amazing show at the newly refurbished Uptown theater in Napa, CA! Crisp and clear vocals and the beautiful guitar solos / playing was perfect. The Robert Cray Band was tight and only wish that they would have played EVERY song in their repertoire.

  • He's phenomenal. Better than ever.

by rksfo on 6/7/10Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

Cray came to Napa last night to play in a very new venue, the restored Uptown Theater right here in downtown Napa. The venue is excellent. The stage can accomodate a good-sized band, the seating is comfortable and faces slightly downward toward the performers. There really doesn't appear to be a bad seat in the house. Cray could not have been any better. His guitar skills don't seem to have waned a bit (better maybe?) and his voice is as it has always been. He had a veteran, really tight band in back of him. Artist: Just about perfect. Venue: Really professional in all respects. Bodes well for downtown Napa.

Our first experience at the Uptown Theatre was a visual and musical feast. The color choices for the decor, design features, comfort, as well acoustics were excellent! The Theatres seats were hands down the most comfortable we have ever experienced in any theatrical or musical venue around the world. Where have Moreland and Arbuckle been hiding? A perfect opening for the versitile storytelling and musical play of Robert Cray and his amazing band. We will encourage our friends from the Sonoma Valley and San Francisco to come experience an elegant yet comfortable local venue.

  • Robert Cray Band as Awsome as Ever!

    by C3Delta on 6/7/10Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

Young Bob was awsome June 6 in Napa. I have seen Robert Cray almost 20 times over the last 23 years and he never fails to provide first class music, guitar playing and showmanship! I would recommend Young Bob to anyone looking for high quailty, soul full blues!

  • Robert Cray was awesome!

by GVRunr on 6/7/10Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

The Robert Cray Band are masters. A little change to the "Because of Me" classic made it that much more real (for me, that song/story has always been akin to Romeo & Juliet - a tragedy the pain from which makes the main character want to take it all back and make it right, but it's too late). His voice has a steel quality that has not abandoned him over the years. Mr. Cray doesn't chat much, but he repeatedly thanked the audience and you knew he meant it. The newly remodeled Uptown Theatre was worth the wait. It still smells new and the sound was perfect. Truly a night to remember...and savor.

  • Robert Cray continues to shine...

    by LK61 on 6/7/10Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen the Robert Cray Band 3X over the past 5 yrs and they always exceed my anticipation and expectations. The only negative about the Uptown Theatre Napa (knewly renovated and opened) is there is no dance floor! Hard to sit in your seat for Robert Cray Band. Beautiful venue and the sound was superb! I recommend the balancy Row S, seat 106 and 107! They are square in the middle with no one in front...Perfect!

  • cray was OK

by jacksion on 6/7/10Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 3 out of 5

The opening band was loud and their music was repetitious. One or two of their pieces would have been OK, but 45 minutes of it was much too loud and began to sound like noise, not music. So when Robert Cray came on, at first his music was pretty great. But after a while, the combination of the opening act and Cray's repeated rythms made us want the night to come to an end. Cray is a wonderful musician and his band is awesome, so if you like loud, predictable sounds, he is an act you should see.

  • Cray got funky!!!!

The venue was excellent and both bands, Moreland & Arbuckle who opened and Robert Cray knew how to play. Their style of music was enjoyed by all.
