The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

I really enjoyed Robert's show this time. He was in a great mood, interacting with the audience and genaerally having a great time. I have seen Robert tweleve times over the years and this was the most relaxed and comfortable I have seen him. I love to see Cousins back and as always Pugh was at the top of his game. Right on!!!

Robert Cray and his Band at their best. This was a unique experience. You can play blues in a different way but not better.

  • Keeping the blues dynamic

I really liked the jumpin' groove of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - fantastic displays of muscianship throughout their set! Made me wish I knew how to swing! The show shifted into another gear when Robert Cray and band took the stage. Cray's playing is so sweet and dynamic and his voice so unique - he's keeping the blues dynamic and alive - not just playing the old standards note for note. I will definitely see the Robert Cray Band again! Anybody that leads a band like that and performs the show with sandals on has got to be righteous!

  • Robert Cray was a Great Show!!!

    by Toma2 on 8/17/10Potawatomi Casino/Northern Lights Theater - MilwaukeeRating: 4 out of 5

My only regret is that the show ended. Sound was great very entertaining. Comfortable theater. Robert Cray put on an outstanding show. We went with a group of 8 people and all had a great time

  • Robert Cray Band was outstanding!!

by missd2 on 8/10/10SS&C SummerWind Performing Arts Center - WindsorRating: 5 out of 5

Our first time at SS& C - had great seats, thought the place was very well organized. Plenty of parking spaces, nice to have a choice of walking or taking a shuttle (we walked w/cooler). No long lines for tickets, or restrooms (we brought snacks) so I don't know about the food lines. Concert started on time (7:00) with warm up band Mohegan Sun All Star (which was excellent) After the concert, we stay behind just a bit, when we decided to leave the walkway was lit up and the volunteers had flashlights to guide us back to the parking space - all were very pleasant with good nights and hoped you enjoyed the show. No grid lock getting out either - with police and volunteers controlling the flow of the traffic we were home in no time! Thanks for a wonderful time and a very pleasant experience - we will definitely be back!!

  • Robert Cray at Summerwinds Exceptional!

Summerwinds in Windsor CT was an unforgettable venue for listiening to the cool soft blues sounds of the Robert Cray Band on a warm New England August summer evening under the stars! Can't wait to get back there!

  • Robert Cray Band was awesome!

by Lizzy135 on 8/9/10SS&C SummerWind Performing Arts Center - WindsorRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was really great. I had never been to Summerwinds before and thought it was a great place to hold a concert. We were seated under the tent - just in case of rain - but truly there wasn't a bad seat in the house. It was a beautiful night so it was great to be able to be outside for the concert.

  • Robert Cray rocks!

by ElyP on 8/9/10SS&C SummerWind Performing Arts Center - WindsorRating: 5 out of 5

The weather was perfect, the venue was awesome and the music rocked. It was my first time at SummerWind and what a great music venue. Ther weather could not have been more perfect for an outdoor concert. The music was also perfect for that kind of setting. What better way to spend an evening than setting out on the lawn, having dinner and listening to some great music!

  • excellent show

i loved ths show. Robert Cray Band is awesome. The venue is very nice and comfortable. No smoking inside the arena area. The sound was good but could have been great but they need to mix better. There were times when the sound engineer would suddenly change what he was doing and vocals would either blast or drop off. There were times when they had a good mix and shouldnt have messed with it. I would recomend this venue at anytime. Ticket prices for the lawn were reasonable and the venue is new. This arena is much smaller that what you would think. There isn't a bad seat in the house.

  • Robert Cray jammed

This was a great concert. The atmosphere at Summerwind made for a great show. Robert Cray and his band did a superb job with the blues and it was great to see some humor regarding the mosquito's thrown into the act. would definately go and and see again and it was a relaxing, fun-filled evening.

  • The Robert Cray Band was awesome!!!

This is the third time I have seen Robert Cray. I thought the SummerWind Performing Arts Center was a terrific venue and Robert and his band were great as always. I think Robert Cray is one of the most talented artists around - an awesome singer, songwriter and guitarist! The only thing that could have made the night better was if they played Foul Play - my favorite song!

  • by Anonymous on 8/8/10SS&C SummerWind Performing Arts Center - WindsorRating: 3 out of 5

I thought he was good however needed to do more up tempo music of his so that the crowd would be more energized and in to it. It was hard to hear him sometimes. sound need to turn his mike up more. Generally I would say that its was a good concert.

Opening act was great as was Robert Cray. Fabulous Evening, great venue!

  • Robert Cray: Caution - Only for the end of the day

by SuperBored on 8/8/10SS&C SummerWind Performing Arts Center - WindsorRating: 2 out of 5

Mr Cray was the perfect cure for an insomniac last evening. While his voice and his licks were fine, the ballad-after-ballad song list was forgettable. The Irish have a saying about their beloved Van Morrison calling his paly these days, " much of a muchness" Mr Cray. Kal David former lead from The Fabulous Rhinestones, should have been the top bill. His soulful guitar (check out While My Guitar Gently Weeps on YouTube) accompanied by his still fine vocals, clearly overshadowed Crays stage presence this night

  • Exceeded expectations

by iodojac on 8/8/10Potawatomi Casino/Northern Lights Theater - MilwaukeeRating: 4 out of 5

I have to admit, I haven't listened to a lot of Robert Cray. I was told he is best in concert. I absolutely thought the band was tight, he was into the "musical moment" and Cray is a unique blues/R&B guitarist. I was glad I went and loved the show.

  • Sound was disappointing

by moonchild59 on 8/8/10SS&C SummerWind Performing Arts Center - WindsorRating: 3 out of 5

Robert Cray was great as usual. I've seen him perform a dozen times all around the country. It was a great show except for the fact that the sound was out of whack, especially from Robert's mike. The sound man must be tarred and feathered at once!

  • Play that funky Fender blues boy!

by JPSawx on 8/8/10SS&C SummerWind Performing Arts Center - WindsorRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray is the MASTER blues man. Excellent concert

  • Rober Cray: Great R&B and Blues

by Sacron on 8/8/10SS&C SummerWind Performing Arts Center - WindsorRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent band effort. Cray is terrific, vocals, guitar, writing - he does it all. Band plays as a unit - and lays down funky R&B and stripped down electric blues.

  • Cray awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymous on 8/7/10Potawatomi Casino/Northern Lights Theater - MilwaukeeRating: 5 out of 5

I first seen him back in 1986 & he is better than ever. As long as he plays i will follow.I drove 3hrs. to get to the show worth every minute to me.I would go see him every week if he played closer.

  • by Anonymous on 6/10/10Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

The uptown theater was perfect. Loved the architecture. Acoustics were very good. Except for the two drunks sitting in front of us that were distracting, the concert was exceptional. We would go to see Robert Cray if he was playing in someone's garage but seeing and experiencing him at this theater was memorable.
