The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • Vocal perfection

My husband had to miss it, but I'm really happy I went ahead to the venue. I've been trying to see Robert Cray for a long long time. He did not disappoint. His vocals were absolute perfection.

  • Robert Cray was forgettable

by BrownieAndie on 3/6/17River Rock Casino Resort - RichmondRating: 3 out of 5

I was excited to be able to give tickets to Robert Cray to my brother for a Christmas present. He is a big fan of the Blues & Robert Cray was a master in this genre. Imagine how disappointed I was to hear from him that Blues was not what they were playing. He said that the Casino was mind boggling & fun but only when the band stopped playing & Robert Cray was solo was the show what he had hoped for..... Too bad.....

Show and music were great. Mr. Cray's interaction with the audience made it so much more personal feeling. Great Show!!

  • The Rose was a perfect venue for Robert Cray!

by Donnuchi on 12/17/16The Rose - PasadenaRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first time I had been at The Rose and it was an awesome place! The sound was just right, not too loud. Because you don't have to play loud when you are as awesome as The Robert Cray Band! They were incredible! Robert has such an awesome vibe on stage. I am so glad I went and hope he returns next year!

  • Robert Cray the Blues Great

    by SuperDude2 on 11/16/16State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 3 out of 5

A legend. I was elated to attend a Robert Cray Band concert. I've been listening to his fabulous, clean guitar licks and great voice for 3 decades, and with each passing year I appreciate him more. The live concert was a dissappoinment though as the sound quality was poor. Everything (especially the warm up band) was entirely TOO LOUD. This is universally the #1 problem identified by all my peers. Great artists should know that sometimes you get more (satisfaction) with less (volume). A lesser talent might need to cover rough edges with blaring music, but I expected more from Robert Cray. Also, keyboard sound overpowered other pieces. Wondered if sound tech (if there was one) was either 22 years old, or just adopted the same old "louder is better" mantra. The artist that listens to their key demographic will be in greater demand, be able to charge more, and have a more satisfied fan base. I'm 54 and 95% of attendees were between 50 and 65.

  • Robert Cray is one of the BEST! A legend!

by BiancaBigFan on 11/14/16Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino Bears Den - Niagara FallsRating: 5 out of 5

This was our second time seeing the Robert Cray Band and we were not disappointed! My husband and I have been a longtime fans and he never disappoints live. His voice is absolute perfection-heavenly!! His songs are beautiful, unique, funky and soulful all in one. He is also always so humble and gracious and seems to really appreciate his audience. The Bears Den is small and quant-the perfect place to see them! Not a bad seat in the house! The casino had great entertainment after with a live band (Showtime-who did a great variety of music-SO fun!) and then a really great DJ with dancing to all the best/favorite dance songs! Last we stayed overnight at the casino hotel, which was great!

Robert Cray never disappoints. His solid playing and tone ring true as always. Was disappointed he didn't do "Smokin' Gun" All in all a great venue for a night of great blues!

Awesome show! Wished he would have played longer! Great place to see a concert

  • Music Experience

by RosieCorona on 11/13/16State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray sounds better in person than on studio recordings and he's pretty awesome on a studio recording! His show was simple and about the music. No flashy lights or outfit changes...just a wonderful music experience. He didn't play many of his "hits" which to me shows class...not going for the "hey remember this" but rather showcasing his sound and his ability. LOVED IT! One thing I was not happy about was the number of people that moved around during the show! I have never been to a small venue concert before where so many people got up to go to the restroom or get a drink or whatever they were doing. It was distracting and I was amazed that someone couldn't prepare themselves and then sit and enjoy the awesome music that was before them! Adults that can't sit sill for a couple of hours...geez.

  • Always stellar

by leslieba on 11/13/16State Theatre, Kalamazoo - KalamazooRating: 5 out of 5

The Robert Cray band is a soulful infusion of rock and blues. Mr Cray was in fine voice and his guitar work, as usual, was sublime.

Too bad there aren't a lot of fans exposed to Mr. Cray at events like Crossroads so they would know what they are missing. He expects the best from his band mates and leads by example.

  • Best Blues Festival EVER!

by Kat711 on 8/3/16Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The artists were amazing, and we truly enjoyed every bit of this concert! I would recommend this to everyone. We always went to the Jazz Festival, but this one was truly the best!

  • Great Show

by tdellay on 8/3/16Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great show and loved the venue. Was the first festival I've seen there. Next time I'll have to double check the start time. I missed the 1st act.

by meliz50 on 8/3/16Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Great concert. The sound levels were off on some of the bands. It would have been better with 3 acts instead of 4 - lots of people, including myself had to leave before the headliner, Robert Cray, was finished as it was a long day and getting late into evening. Some drunk people around especially at end of evening that spoiled some of the enjoyment.

  • Robert Cray is fantastic!!

by Tommyboy24a on 8/3/16Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Great Blues Festival at Chateau Ste Michelle Winery. It was our first time there and we really enjoyed the venue. We had reserve seats and the chairs were comfortable, and the food and wine were really good. The music was great. All four bands sounded amazing, and Robert Cray sounded fantastic.

  • The Blues With Wine

by timwack on 8/3/16Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 4 out of 5

You couldn't ask for a much better day at the Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery than the Wine Country Blues Festival. One great act after another, each connecting with the crowd, the sun shining, people enjoying the day....this was concert heaven. Thanks CSM, keep the good times coming!

  • by Anonymous on 8/3/16Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Great show, great venue, great weather, overpriced wine, but the concert and weather made up for the overpriced wine. Suggest buying the same wines inside the winery rather than at the concert wine kiosk and save 5-7$/bottle.

  • some acts not blues

by xtryder on 8/3/16Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 3 out of 5

Shemikia Copeland was great and should have been the headliner, Robert Cray was very good as usual, James hunter group was musically good, but the style of music was not Blues and did not belong on the same venue, everyone was waiting for a blues act.

  • by Anonymous on 8/3/16Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Fabulous full day event. Well orchestrated for timing. 3rd act was okay, not great! Much of audience had left by the time the final act played (Robert Cray) who was the presumed headliner.
