The Robert Cray Band in Concert

When it comes to live performance, The Robert Cray Band like to get right down to business. Though they're led by one of the most distinctive blues guitar stylists of his generation, and the rest of the band bears a similar amount of instrumental authority, they don't like to showboat. Flashy licks are simply not what Cray and company are all about.

Instead, they cut right through to the emotional core of every tune — whether they're playing the classics that put Cray on the map, like "Right Next Door" and "Smoking Gun," or killing it on covers of tunes by the likes of Bill Withers, Bobby "Blue" Bland, or The Mississippi Sheiks. Cray and his cohorts use their mighty musical prowess in the service of the song. Sure, you'll hear plenty of fluid guitar solos, but at a Robert Cray show you'll never hear a single unnecessary note — in other words, everything he and his band play on stage really matters.

The Robert Cray Band Background

Robert Cray did more for the blues in the 1980s than anybody other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. He started out small with a string of early-'80s indie albums, but by the middle of the decade the singer/guitarist's blend of blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll influences made its way to the mainstream with a major-label deal that introduced the world to the game-changing Strong Persuader LP.

Between his supple grooves, soulful vocals, storytelling songs, and stinging guitar solos, Cray emerged as the blues hero the '80s didn't even know they were waiting for until he came along. Over time, Cray's sound has become simultaneously deeper and more expansive. His reputation has grown to the point that he's an esteemed elder statesman of modern blues, a winner of multiple Grammy awards, and an artist as venerated today as any of his heroes were when he was growing up and learning his licks.

  • Robert Cray! Incredible live performance

    by pro1mod on 10/19/17Jefferson Theatre - BeaumontRating: 5 out of 5

First time to see Robert Cray live and definitely won't be the last. True to form bluesman whom didn't disappoint with both the 'strat and vocals. The Jefferson Theater is one of my favorite venues.

  • Cray the right way!

by whollycreole on 10/18/17Jefferson Theatre - BeaumontRating: 4 out of 5

First time experiencing live and in person despite being a fan since the "Chicago Sound" days ("Too Many Cooks", "The Welfare", "The Score", etc.). Misters Weinberg, Cousins, and Carter accompanied 'Young Bob's' showmanship unbelievably well. Especially enjoyed the Bill Withers cover 'Same Love That Made Me Laugh'.

  • Robert Cray nailed it

First time visiting the Jefferson Theatre for a concert and it was great. Robert Cray put on a great show and the venue fit the bill. Great show...

  • Voice still the same

Could have done without singing about the wall. Leave the politics out. Other than that it is worth the show.

  • Robert Cray - Exquisite

Loved every moment. What a great talent with a velvet voice and a virtuoso on the guitar.

  • Concert of a Lifetime

    by Waldog7 on 10/18/17Jefferson Theatre - BeaumontRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray has still got it.He was absolutely flawless, his voice was as smooth as ever and his over the top guitar licks gave the audience something to remember forever! What a night that I was so glad to be a part of.Every song that he sang and played was simple perfection, this will be a concert that I will be telling my friends and family about for a long time coming!Cant wait to see this Legend ,Robert Cray, in concert again!!!

  • Robert Cray was on his game.

by wildwestfrank on 10/18/17Jefferson Theatre - BeaumontRating: 4 out of 5

First time at the Jefferson Theater.Cool, historic, and acoustic. Seemed like the perfect size for Robert Cray. The band was tight and on target. Robert's playing and vocals were spot on. I've seen him twice before and I think this was my favorite performance.

  • An Evening With Robert Cray

by GuitarRameses on 10/11/17Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I really enjoyed the show on 10/8/17 at the Carolina Theater. What a great venue, don't think there is a bad seat in the house. Robert Cray and his band rocked the house with his awesome style of Blues. He had the crowd on the feet and dancing in the isles. Everyone left knowing that had seen one of the Greatest Blues Guitarist of all times !!!!!!!!

  • Robert Cray is hugely talented but no entertainer

by MyNickelOpinion on 10/11/17Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

I've seen Robert Cray play 6 or 7 times since 1990, including the performance in Durham NC this past Sunday. He is still an extremely talented musician but invests little in being an entertainer and his concerts have shrunk to 90 minutes. He no longer plays all of his most well-known songs, so don't expect a sing- along. I left the latest concert feeling short-changed and realized it will probably be the last time I pay to see him play.

  • Robert Cray Band

by Hearingdamaged on 10/10/17The Santander Performing Arts Center - ReadingRating: 2 out of 5

Really enjoyed the opening act "Bind Boy Paxton". Very talented and easy to understand. We were really looking forward to Robert Cray Band a long time favorite of ours. The volume was painfully loud making the vocals hard to understand and the instruments muddled. My wife and I had to leave after 3 songs because we couldn't take the noise anymore. I think maybe the sound techs need to have their hearing checked. There is no reason for ear splitting volume. Louder is not necessarily better. We have attended many other events at the performing arts center and this is the first time we left early because we were actually in pain. Very disappointed.

Enjoyed watching this legend sing and play some amazing blues. Hope this event continues for many years and that Robert will return. I would see him again in a minute. I just wish hew would have been able to play for another hour. The time went by so fast and he has such a large catalog of music to choose from. Looking forward to next year and beyond.

Never disappoints - fabulous band and set list...incredible voice and talent.

  • Robert Cray was absolutely fantastic!

by Busboy56 on 10/8/17Blue Ocean Music Hall - SalisburyRating: 5 out of 5

He played for almost two hours non stop. Great voice and range. The one drawback: he didn't sing my favorite song, You're Everything! The venue was first class all the way. Very similar to a Vegas lounge.

Great opening act and fantastic show from Robert. Exactly what I expected.

  • by rmspecialized on 7/26/17Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 2 out of 5

Two hours later started to play familiar songs. Would have liked more if they would have mixed in his new music with the older ones.

  • Always love Robert Cray

Very good as expected. A little longer set would have been nice.

  • incredible show

by eljefecuervo on 7/26/17Uptown Theatre Napa - NapaRating: 5 out of 5

Robert Cray and his band had us spellbound from the git go. Every song was a masterpiece. I'd say most of the people in the audience felt the same way. Except for the people sitting right behind us who felt it necessary to talk through the entire show. Ididn't matter. Incredibly there were empty seats all around so we just moved. I would go see this band again for twice the price
