About

Rihanna is nothing if not prolific. Since her 2005 debut, the 25-year-old singer has released seven albums and racked up twelve No. 1 singles, setting a record in the process as the solo artist with the fastest accumulation of ten chart-topping singles – a feat she accomplished in just under five years. A quick scroll through the radio dial will confirm that Rihanna is the most ubiquitous figure in Top 40 airplay, and considering her rapid-fire release schedule, it’s hardly a surprise that she recently edged out her idol Whitney Houston to become the artist with the ninth most Top 10 singles ever (24 in total). After hugely successful collaborations with Eminem in 2010 (“Love the Way You Lie”) and Drake in 2012 (Take Care), Rihanna scored her first U.S. No. 1 album with 2012’s Unapologetic, which includes the hugely successful “Diamonds” and “Stay.” Rihanna is shining bright in concert on the 2013 Diamonds World Tour -- opening acts 2 Chainz and A$AP Rocky are worth the ticket price alone.

Born in Barbados in 1988, Rihanna grew up listening to reggae and began singing at age seven. As a teen, her Caribbean-influenced demos attracted the attention of label execs, and in 2005 she auditioned for Jay-Z, signing a six-album record deal with Def Jam Recordings the same day. Her first two albums, Mother of the Sun (2005) and A Girl Like Me (2006), spawned hit singles “Pon De Replay” and chart-topper “S.O.S.,” but it wasn’t until “Umbrella,” from third album Good Girl Gone Bad (2007), that she cemented her place as a serious contender to the pop throne. Originally written for Britney Spears, “Umbrella” peaked at No. 1 and earned Rihanna her first Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. A string of platinum-selling albums would follow, including Loud (2010) and Talk That Talk (2011), both of which featured an increasingly dance-oriented sound, including chart-topping club anthems “Only Girl (In the World)” and “We Found Love.” After terminating her tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship with rapper Chris Brown, Rihanna released Unapologetic in 2013 to positive reviews – and a No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200.

  • Rihanna: Good Performance behind Weak Album

by spiceman on 6/26/16The Forum - InglewoodRating: 4 out of 5

Rihanna brought her ANTI world tour to Los Angeles last week for a couple of shows. The tour is named after her 8th studio album, ANTI, which features the number one hit “Work” featuring Drake. I had last seen Ri-Ri on her Loud tour back in 2011. She’s had more 3 albums and countless hits since then. She started the show with her smash ballad “Stay” — where she was on a small stage on the other side of the arena. She was dressed with a hooded coat over her heard. She also sang her part of “Love the Way You Lie” — her duet w/ Eminem. From there, Rihanna hopped on a suspended plexiglass catwalk over the crowd, and made her way to the main stage. (I heard that it didn’t work on her 2nd night, and she had to make her way on the floor). Rihanna is one of my favorite singers of the last 10 years. She has had an incredible run of hit singles since her debut. So that is why I was so upset when the “ANTI” album finally came out, and I didn’t like it. More like hated it. We waited 3 years for this? A moody project with some half-ass songs on it, and no real hits? I guess I am in the minority judging by this show, and the reaction to her new songs. She did a majority of the album in the concert. “Work,” her duet with Drake, is decent musically, but lyrically it is sort of lame. I never would have predicted it would go to #1. “Kiss It Better” and “Desperado” are the other 2 that are OK, the rest are just not my cup of tea. The stage was sort of sparse, very clean and fresh looking all in white. The band was lowered for part of the show, but were raised up later in the show. She did perform a medley of her songs with rappers like she did before. So we got “Live Your Life,” “Run This Town,” and “Kill the Lights.” And she also performed her other duet with Drake “Take Care” which is a much better song than “Work.” Unfortunately, Drake was a no-show that night, but I heard he showed up the following night in LA. She did perform “Umbrella,” “Where Have You Been,” “We Found Love” and “Diamonds.” Those are some of my favorites from her. During “We Found Love” there were giant rainbow blow-ups surrounding the stage, to give the feel of a rave. They looked sort of like caterpillars. It was interesting that she chose some album cuts over hits too, like “Birthday Cake” and “Man Down.” She had about 4 costume changes in the night. Most of them were in earth tones. They were playful and stylish. The wildest one being a bit of a see-through dress with her privates covered in a body suit covered in spangles and glitter. Her band, backup singers and dancers all did a great job supporting the star. She is one beautiful woman, with a very distinctive and strong voice. I forgive her for “ANTI,” and I give her props for trying something different. She could have played it safe, but she didn’t and I commend her for it. It was also good to hear “Bitch Better Have My Money” and “FourFiveSeconds” — her hits from 2015. One interesting side note was the backdrop used during the ending sequence. It was a silver backdrop — with soap bubbles dropping from the ceiling against it. The show ended with the drummer and percussionist looking like they were going to be swallowed up in bubbles. Opening act Travis Scott’s set was big miss for me. He’s a foul-mouthed rapper, in his performance and when he was talking to. The crowd though ate it all up, so again I am in the minority. Only one song in his set seemed to have a decent beat. He also made his way out into the crowd for one number, and let someone rap a couple of his verses too. The guy did a good job, and Travis even gave him his cap. Songs I would have loved to have heard in the show: “Pon De Replay,” “SOS,” “Murderer,” “S&M,” “Cheers Drink to That,” “Jump,” “Please Don’t Stop the Music,” “Only Girl in the World” and more. Thanks to Rihanna and her crew for a good show. Hopefully I will love the album she is touring behind next time!

  • I'd like a Rihfund

by iLovetoConcert on 6/22/16The Forum - InglewoodRating: 2 out of 5

I frequent concerts, averaging 5 a month, and I was really excited to see Rihanna as she's been on my bucket list for years since Good Girl Gone Bad. I decided to shell out $121.15 for decent seats at the Forum in Inglewood. We got there late and missed Travis Scott, but it was ok since we don't care much for auto tune. Long story short, the arena's audio was terrible which is unusual for the Forum, the outfits and stage design didn't make any since? There were clear inflatables on the sides of the stage, and bubble falling from an illuminated cyclorama behind the stage. Rihanna barely sang AT ALL, cut every song short except for 3 new ones, and when it came time for her to actually sing she always pulled the mic away from her mouth (these are the best parts of the song). Her backup singers carried her all the way through! She didn't dance, and kept going for water every 3 mins (Yes i'm thinking the same thing Marihanna). There were no special guests, and no encore. I don't know why I was expecting more, but I really psyched myself out... At the end of the concert everyone was looking around like what just happened?

  • Top Notch!!!! Please stop underestimating her!

Rihanna is a great entertainer. I appreciated her showmanship, music list and beautiful costumes. She sings, she dances, and just puts out a ton of energy. Rihanna was also great about connecting with her fans. You get your money's worth; she's a class act. Only bad part of the show was the opening act: Travis Scott. Ughhhhh! He's an auto tune nightmare!!!!

She had on wonderful and sexy outfits the whole time. She sounded great and talked to the crowd often. She is as beautiful in person as she is on T.V. She's just a wonderful and natural performer. by IKandiee on 5/20/16Smoothie King Center - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5

This is definitely a must see concert. Rhianna is top of the line. Her dancers were great and her outfits were stylish and eye catching. She is so personable and singled me out when she was saying goodbye at the end of the night. She performed a variety of songs old and new and truly entertained us the entire time. The tickets were very expensive for the VIP experience but worth every penny I paid!!!
