About

“When is a king, a king no more?” Richard II transports Shakespeare’s historical epic about the life and reign of England’s King Richard II all the way to 1980s Manhattan. Headlined by Michael Urie as the titular tragic monarch, the reimagining from Red Bull Theater (adapted and directed by Craig Baldwin) will take over Off-Broadway’s Astor Place Theatre for a limited run from October 28 to November 30. The cast of Richard II will also include Grantham Coleman, Ron Canada, Kathryn Meisle, David Mattar Merten, Lux Pascal, James Seol, Daniel Stewart Sherman, Ryan Spahn, Emily Swallow and Sarin Monae West.

  • Mesmerizing performance

by SW on 11/29/25Astor Place Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Urie brilliant as RII and entire cast strong. It can be hard to follow iambic pentameter in Shakespeare’s plays but this group made it easy.

  • Really great!

by Paul on 11/29/25Astor Place Theatre - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Actors, design, direction - all top notch. A great chance to see one of the less-famous Shakespeare pieces. And lots to think about afterwards.

  • Exceptional acting, vital, engaging adaptation

by Richard on 11/26/25Astor Place Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This company proves American actors can perform Shakespeare with precision, pace and presence. The adaptation may startle purests, I thought it dignified the poetic language and brought an engaging humanity and clarity to a play that can befuddle audiences. All the designs are exquisite. The major themes of the corruption/misuse of power and the death of kings are even more poignant in our current political and social environment.

  • Less than I expected

by BAM NY on 11/26/25Astor Place Theatre - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

I primarily wanted to attend to see Michael Urie in a role that I expected would stretch his wings. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing him preform in various parts: Buyer & Cellar; The Government Inspector; and now Shrinking. But the 80s vibe, the whole direction and the effete stylings of Richard did not come across in a positive way. One moment that stood out was the scene of the duel between Mowbray and Bolingbroke: drawn out and each missed shot allowed Bolingbroke to perform a manic dance. I didn’t understand the passionate kisses between Richard and his followers. I’m not a purist about Shakespeare; this adaptation missed the mark for me. Having read The NY Times review afterword, I see that I am in a distinct minority.

  • Thrilling

by Bard fan on 11/19/25Astor Place Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Brought a friend who rarely attends theater and was skeptical of a less familiar Shakespeare play; he was thrilled by this production as I was. Michael Urie was riveting and all cast were great. (Mowbray was unexpectedly interesting, and every beat in the opening dispute was dramatic.) Minimalist set very effective and quasi 80s staging clarified the characters (and added touches of humor). The play has some of my favorite speeches; they were thrilling but so was everything else. Looking out for future work by those involved.

  • A wonderful, entertaining evening

by Larry on 11/19/25Astor Place Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

My family enjoyed this show very much. The acting kept us involved for the entire evening. Michael Urie, the lead actor, had a wonderful command of the moment. Though it is a very old story, it had relevance for the present. All of the cast seemed very comfortable with their roles. Definitely a must see.

  • Wonderful!

by VP on 11/19/25Astor Place Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Having not been particularly familiar with this play or the history, was very enthralled from the beginning to end. The 80’s and gay elements certainly brought out the camp and made it much more accessible. It took me a minute to get used to hearing the Shakespearean dialogue, but once it connected it was great. Don’t be scared away.

  • A Richard II to remember

by Laurel on 11/18/25Astor Place Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Being Gen Jones, I remember the 80's all too well. This production set in the time of Studio 54, visuals act as a point of entrance into understanding the fall of Richard II lay within himself as a flawed king. Michael Urie is brilliant at showing the inward doubts and the outward obliviousness of the consequences of his actions.

  • Wonderful show

The set design was minimalist and extremely effective. Great acting uniformly and captivating.

  • Splendid performance

by Toughcritic on 11/9/25Astor Place Theatre - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Michael Urie was excellent as Richard Ii. The rest of the cast was good and the production even on a small stage worked. Worth seeing especially given that it is not performed often
