All I can say is, I love you Annie Haslam Novella is not my favorite album, but I like it more now
Annie Haslam sings like a supreme angel, surrounded a group of stellar musicians. The complexity of Renaissance's music is virtually untouched in today's musical arena. Yet they are accessible to and loved by many fans of multiple genres, including mainstream pop, jazz, folk, and even classical.
Annie haslam voice is still great !! The band was tight and the sound was great !! The music hall is a very nice place no bad seats the staff is friendly, drinks very reasonable.
Talk about a time machine. I was transported back to the mid-1970's, Annie and Renaissance did the Novella album in its entirety. Only difference was it smelled better than I remember the 70's and, my grandfather was at the show. In fact, it looked like all my friends grandparents were at the show. SERIOUSLY: with a compression fracture and wearing a brace, Annie still cleared 3 octaves. Impressive. I will see them again. Thanks for waiting for me Renaissance.
The venue was wonderful - good sight lines, excellent sound. The band sounded great and, even when they messed up and had to start one song over, connected with an extremely supportive audience of diehard fans. On the flip side, I wasn't crazy about the decision to play all (or most of) of Novella, which view as one of their lesser LPs. Annie can still sing her butt off and the rest of the band were in great voice as well. All in all, a solid B+ in my book.
The concert and the venue (The Concert Hall) were both great. We last saw Renaissance at The Academy of Music on 14th Street in Manhattan abouyt 38 years ago with the same friend. The consensus is that Annie Haslam, Michael Dunford and the songs more than held up through all the years. Annie was more than a trooper given her recent back issues. She wore a very obvious brace that didn't seem to hinder her legendary vocal range at all. The few new songs they played seemed like winners. I am anticipating the new album sometime next year. The venue looks like a converted school. It is very intimate with 800 seats, including a balcony.
awesome didn't play a couple of favs but loved it anyway
Renaissance played to a full house. Although Ms. Haslam was in a lot of pain from a fractured spine, she braved it that evening, and sang pretty well. For someone under these circumstances she was in good spirits. At times her voice was weaker than anticipated, while at other times (when she sang two songs from Renaissance's new album) her voice was powerful. The band's rendition of Novella was true to the original.
I first listened to Renaissance in the '70s and loved their sound. Finally I had a chance to see them and did Sat, Oct 20, 2012. I had no idea what to expect. Annie Haslam is now 65 and was in her 30s when she recorded the last song I heard from them. The group had disbanded, re-banded and changed members (except Michael Dunford, who had written most of their early music, and Annie). Most of the concerts earlier in the tour had been postponed because Annie had a back condition so I wasn't even certain she'd be performing. The group's sound before was very symphonic and this venue wasn't very large. Lots of questions. With all these layers of uncertainty, the concert was fantastic and the crowd responded! The group sounded as good as on any of my recordings and the pristine voice of Ms. Haslam brought a tear to my eye. They are most definitely back and worth seeing. If you ever thought about seeing this group - go!
A good show...........but sound issues w/ balcony seats
What a pleasant surprise to see a bunch of 60 something year old rockers so faithfully recreate their beautiful and complex music. Annie still has that amazing voice, even wearing a back brace due to her compressed disc problem. Great selection of favorites including Mother Russia and Carpet of the Sun. Two songs for their upcoming album were absolutely terrific. Highly recommended and bring your kids to show them what great music used to be like.
Renaissance is one of those groups that for some reason I never got to see when they first started out. So I had the opportunity to see them recently and went. And was glad I did. Annie is quite amazing. What a voice she still has. And this band is made up of extremely talented people. During their set which ran approximately two hours they performed old classics as well as a few new tunes from their forthcoming album. It was exciting to hear their new music which was well received by the audience. The new album sounds quite promising. I am not familiar with a lot of the names of the songs but recognized the music. If you are a fan of this group and they should tour in your area you will not want to miss them. A totally enjoyable evening. They did one encore. Now I will go back and give a listen to their albums again. If anyone who attended this concert in New York City knows the complete set list I'd love to know. Thanks.
