Ray Lamontagne is no stranger to the world Folk music. His fourth album, "God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise," released in 2010, won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk album, and he subsequently embarked on the 2011 Pariah Dogs Summer Tour, so named after his new band The Pariah Dogs. With a soulful upper register and a breathless falsetto that adds hints of R&B to otherwise straightforward folk arrangements, LaMontagne's voice is always at the center of his performances. The typically reticent singer keeps banter to a minimum at his concerts, pouring his concentration into the songs, at times even singing with his eyes closed.
LaMontagne's journey to the spotlight has been anything but conventional. Though he released his debut album "Trouble" in September 2004, it didn't receive popular attention until nearly two years later, when it made a top five entry in the UK charts and eventually went on to sell over 250,000 units in the US alone. By the time of his second release, 2006's "Til the Sun Turns Black," LaMontagne was fast becoming a household ticket, his songs appearing in television shows like "Rescue Me," "Grey's Anatomy," and "Bones." Once again teaming with producer Ethan Johns, LaMontagne's critically-acclaimed third album "Gossip in the Grain" entered the Billboard charts at No. 3, his highest entry to date, entering the Billboard charts at No. 3.
Though not a radical departure from his earlier output, God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise marked a subtle changes to LaMontagne's sound and recording process. He opted to self-produce the album at his home in Massachusetts, and it marked the first collaborative release with his band the Pariah Dogs. While a few songs venture into slightly more aggressive territory (bookends “Repo Man” and “Devil's in the Jukebox”), the album is otherwise characterized by hazy Americana instrumentation and LaMontagne's yearning vocals.
Great venue. Great set. Delight to see him. Outstanding as suspected.
I can honestly say that this is the best concert I have ever been to. Ray LaMontagne went out of his way to sing all of his fans favourite songs. His voice was perfection! And I love how he shared little stories before some of the songs. I would go again tomorrow if I could.
I go to a lot of concerts and Ray was hands down one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to!
A simple show, beautifully performed and thoroughly gripping.
We have been to nearly every show that Ray has done in the area, and a couple far from home. This was the best show we have ever seen of his with the possible exception of the 2009 show at McCaw Hall with the steel guitar player. We were slightly incredulous that all of the songs chosen, aside from the new ones, were the 20 most popular songs. I think he threw in a few of his personal favorites. The set list did nicely span his career thus far. When he spoke in between songs he had thoughtful non offensive sharings, the visuals were additive, and the two (other) folks playing were great, in particular the guy who played ALL the instruments (except bass). Thanks for just passing through the west coast Ray Ray!
This was one of the best concerts ever.! Ray LaMontagne is one of the best song writers and singers around . His voice was incredibly clear , strong and hauntingly beautiful . He sang every on of my favorite , and many others , songs , that sounded better than a recording. , and told wonderful stories about his life and inspiration for his music . I love him , and would see him anytime !
Great show Ray! Very personable Fave venue, paramount is great
We couldn't find the venue parking even with Google Maps help (or lack of). But we found a spot and only had to walk a couple of blocks. We were running a bit late and missed the opening artist, who I really want to see, but we didn't miss any of Ray, so that was great. His voice just gets better and better!
The paramount theatre venue in Seattle was perfect and Ray LaMontagne was everything we had hoped for. Pitch perfect! There was a lot of love for Ray in the room, we made some new friends and we all love the poet, the musician and the performer. Oh and we came all the way from the UK for this one gig.
Ray Lamontagne is my absolute favorite artist to see at the Paramount…or anywhere for that matter. His voice and stage presence is mesmerizing. Please bring him back to Seattle again soon!
Ray is a bit of an introvert, so don't expect a TON of audience engagement. His stage was simple and aesthetic and the imagery was unique and artistic. Ray's voice and musicality are unmatched. We thoroughly enjoyed our night and got the chance to hear all of our favorites and two beautiful new songs. 10/10!!
Overall an amazing show. Ray and his backing band were outstanding. My only criticism is that the audio at the Paramount could have been better. We had great seats and it seemed like they needed some additional speakers for folks near the front/center of the stage. Not louder, just higher quality sound.
Each time I have seen Rayo live has been life changing and this show was as well! Still floating from the experience 💖💖💖
He has never sounded better!! Played ALL of the favorites. Absolutely LOVED this concert!!
If you've never seen Ray live, you've never been to a REAL concert. If you want authentic, true sound from the purest voice you'll ever hear, do yourself a favor and go see Ray! Unbelievable concert every single time!
Ray LaMontagne was an incredible experience. He may have been the most authentic performance I have ever seen. His music was soulful and out of this world and his storytelling and dialogue with the audience was genuine, thoughtful, and sincere. I will be seeing him again!
The show was amazing. The sound, the musicianship, Rays voice. Absolutely top level. The venue is built for quality, Ray and his team really proved it. Can hardly wait to see and hear him again.
His voice, and his music is therapeutic. It was a fantastic show!
Enjoyed Tomberlin but found her testy interaction with the crowd diminished her appeal. Ray listened to his fans and played all my favourite songs! My only criticism would be why he would engage Tomberlin to provide female back up on some of his songs.
Ray did not disappoint. He was exactly what we needed, singing, storytelling, entertaining us. We were very disappointed in the crowd, however, particularly a raucus group to our right who yelled, laughed loudly and inappropriately, and generally disturbed an otherwise perfect concert experience.
