About

Ray Lamontagne is no stranger to the world Folk music. His fourth album, "God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise," released in 2010, won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk album, and he subsequently embarked on the 2011 Pariah Dogs Summer Tour, so named after his new band The Pariah Dogs. With a soulful upper register and a breathless falsetto that adds hints of R&B to otherwise straightforward folk arrangements, LaMontagne's voice is always at the center of his performances. The typically reticent singer keeps banter to a minimum at his concerts, pouring his concentration into the songs, at times even singing with his eyes closed.

LaMontagne's journey to the spotlight has been anything but conventional. Though he released his debut album "Trouble" in September 2004, it didn't receive popular attention until nearly two years later, when it made a top five entry in the UK charts and eventually went on to sell over 250,000 units in the US alone. By the time of his second release, 2006's "Til the Sun Turns Black," LaMontagne was fast becoming a household ticket, his songs appearing in television shows like "Rescue Me," "Grey's Anatomy," and "Bones." Once again teaming with producer Ethan Johns, LaMontagne's critically-acclaimed third album "Gossip in the Grain" entered the Billboard charts at No. 3, his highest entry to date, entering the Billboard charts at No. 3.

Though not a radical departure from his earlier output, God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise marked a subtle changes to LaMontagne's sound and recording process. He opted to self-produce the album at his home in Massachusetts, and it marked the first collaborative release with his band the Pariah Dogs. While a few songs venture into slightly more aggressive territory (bookends “Repo Man” and “Devil's in the Jukebox”), the album is otherwise characterized by hazy Americana instrumentation and LaMontagne's yearning vocals.

Ray L. + HB Orchestra = Magic (Duh.)

    by hstop55 on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Who wouldn't be reluctant? The somber and sobering repertoire of LaMontagne wasn't exactly shows-under-the-stars fare to ring in the summer (or so everyone thought). Consider all assumptions wrong. The class that the Hollywood Bowl orchestra brought to an already-classy enough singer/songwriter made LaMontagne's set ultra humanizing, reminding us that pop music still has battle scars. A truly unique Hollywood Bowl set with all sorts of contradictions that really reflected a man's life story in a single night.

    Set could have been longer.

Great venue of course! Loved Jenny Lewis and Ray but very disappointed set was so short.

    Amazing show!

by Ricola on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I had never heard of Blitzen Trapper before, or really listened to Jenny Lewis all that much and now have become a new fan of their music. I think it's a great thing when you can go to a show for the particular artist you are interested in (in my case Ray) and discover new music that you also like. Seeing Ray play with an orchestra was also pretty spectacular, and I would definitely go to another show like this, perhaps try to get better seats. The only negative thing I would say about the show, is that lots of people were talking/gossiping throughout the music, especially the quiet songs. Perhaps folks need to go somewhere else to talk to each other, rather than paying to talk to each other at a show where everyone else has paid to hear the music.

    Ray is the Best Thing

    by Michelle07 on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The show was really great. I had never been to the Hollywood Bowl, and it was a great venue. I don't have many complaints, just the parking lot afterwards was horrendous. And of course, I could have listened to Ray all night, so another 20 minutes of music would have been awesome! i definitely recommend seeing him perform. He puts on a great show.

by Danimal on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Ray Lamontagne set the perfect mood that fit the venue! Wine, food, and an unbelievable artist singing his soul filled music. Jenny Lewis and Blitzen Trapper were great too. I will be back to the hollywood bowl that is for sure!

    Ray great but too short

by Flemdog on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

This was a fantastic concert, especially Ray with the orchestral accompaniment. However, at just over an hour and only 13 songs, this show was ridiculously short. Granted, there were two opening acts, but each of those were almost longer than the main act. Not really fair, in my opinion. But really great music, well performed, fantastic location, just unfairly short.

    Ray LaMontagne is awesome!

    by c1234 on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Great show... wasn't too familiar with him before the show, only knew one song, but ended up going home and downloading his album and listening to it all over again. A new fav! T-shirts are really cool but way over priced as all t-shirts are for these events are when they cost 2-4 bucks each to make and are sold for $25.

Ray LaMontagne & Jenny Lewis ROCKED!

    by Bravo888 on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

This concert was an unforgettable experience. Jenny Lewis was brand new to me, but I fell completely in love with her as a performer and musician. Ray LaMontagne's performance was captivating. His talent combined with the LA Phil just took me away. All this talent nestled down in the Hollywood Bowl on a beautiful summer evening made for such an enjoyable time!

    Jenny Lewis rocked it!

by Chefsugar on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I am not a huge LaMontagne fan and wasnt at all familiar with Jenny Lewis or Blitzen Trapper.....Jenny Lewis was AWESOME! I cant wait to see her again! The Hollywood Bowl is always wonderful and it was a great evening. Ray LaMontagne really has a wonderful voice but he has zero stage presence and is probably better suited to a smaller venue.

    Ray LaMontagne rocked!

    by justme654 on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The concert was unbelievable! The sound of Ray's gravely singing voice was complemented tremendously with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. The sound quality was amazing and it sounded like we were listening to his cd. In fact, the live performance was better than his recordings! Stunning!

    Deeply Disappointed

by LBnoname on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Jenny Lewis was awesome but because she wasn't the opening act everyone around me talked through her entire set. The orchestra was amazing, but Ray LaMontagne sang each song the same and he hardly interacted with the audience.

    great show

by missneek on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I loved all 3 performers and thought that they fit well together. This was my first time to the Hollywood Bowl and i can't wait to go back in September to see the Beastie Boys. The atmosphere was very relaxed and included a very diverse group of people. The staff was helpful and eailsy found when needed.

He is even better in concert than on the cd tracks, reminding us all why we continue to LOVE his music. I wish his next concert was sooner!

    Ray LaMontage:Simply Amazing

    by esan09 on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The weather was perfect, the opening bands were incredible and of course Ray put on a spectacular show. His live vocals are GREAT!I didn't want his set to end but of course it had too. I'm definitely thinking of catching him again at another venue if possible but if not I'm extremely happy with the Hollywood Bowl experience.

Awesome venue and bands, Ray too short!!

by Turnerea on 7/13/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Great venue-- jenny lewis and blitzen trapper were great opening acts. They didn't play too long. Ray did play more than them, obviously, but still not enough. maybe... 8 songs? then an encore? It was getting on past 10:30, for a show that started at 7:30 though...
