RATATAT IN CONCERT:

Rocktronica duo Ratatat is a favorite of headbangers and ravers alike thanks to their irresistible mix of colossal riffs and booming beats. Mike Stroud’s six-string heroics and Queen-inspired guitar harmonies perfectly complement the band’s sci-fi synthesizers, and Evan Mast’s thunderous, booming basslines on fan favorites like “Loud Pipes” and “Shiller” always get ticket buyers shaking their moneymakers on the dance floor. In addition to plenty of funky jams, the duo treats audiences to a visual spectacle as psychedelic graphics and laser lights dance across projection screens. Fans that like to rock until the break of dawn and dance the night away will find plenty to love every time Ratatat bring their thumping grooves on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Evan Mast (bass/synth/percussion/production) and Mike Stroud (guitar/synth/percussion) originally met as students at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, but they didn’t begin collaborating on music together until 2001. Using Mast’s production equipment and Brooklyn apartment as their home base, Ratatat independently recorded and released their self-titled debut in 2004. The album helped the band land opening spots for artists as diverse as Björk, Daft Punk, Vampire Weekend, and The Killers. The band picked up even more steam by appearing at popular music festivals and releasing their sophomore outing Classics in 2006. Their next three albums -- LP3 (2008), LP4 (2010), and Magnifique (2015) -- all cracked the Billboard 200, and the band’s fanatical following continued to grow. Ratatat continue to please rock and electronica enthusiasts around the globe with their amazing musicianship, top-notch productions, and psychedelic stage shows.

I go to maybe 5 shows a year and if Ratatat comes to town it's usually my favorite throughout the year. Great visuals, insane music. I love it!

Ratatat music is great, visuals were crazy good!

    by v8media on 9/16/10Showbox SODO - Seattle

Ratatat's music is great, it sounds kind of like a throwback to hair rock, but it's got modern beats. I love that they actually play some of the tracks, I wish it were more or fully live, but that's got to make touring more difficult. Plus, it definitely fits their aesthetic to be able to do wide-legged rock guitar poses. The visuals and lighting for this tour are amazing. It was a stadium-quality production in a somewhat small venue. Worth checking out if you like flashy/interesting/cool/beautiful graphics and lights.

    Decent Performance with Lackluster Sound

by AJzer on 9/16/10Showbox SODO - Seattle

Overall, Ratatat had an energetic and engaging set. They had a great set list, comprising of the best songs off most of their released work, as well as some new material (and an amazing and creepy music video to match). I was generally impressed with the amount of instrument switching. They came up with some fun visual effects for their act that culminated in colorful percussive moment in-unison with big heavy mallets, and the crowd was really enjoying themselves. Security also did a great job of support, staying out of the way, and not being dicks. The sound quality at Showbox Sodo is some of the worst I've heard, which is inexcusable for a venue of that size, however. Downsides to this show were the apparent challenge it was for Ratatat to play percussion instruments in strict time. Everyone deserves a bit of leeway with such broad talent, but these guys should probably practice that part a bit more. Also, it wouldn't kill them to bring in other musicians for their live shows. It can still be a two-man project, and then bring along a session keyboardist/dj/drummer to add in the other parts of the song. Overall, a great show, but likely a one-shot for me unless I happen to run into them at a festival.

    _Horrible_ second opener

by SailorJP on 9/16/10Showbox SODO - Seattle

The 1st opener I expected to be OK, and it was...the (unexpected) second opener was absolutely awful. I've seen bands better than them LOSE battle-of-the-bands contests; how are they playing in front of hundreds of people? and opening for a band like RATATAT? I am sorely disappointed in the overall show experience: I have been to a lot of concerts over the years, and I have NEVER had to stand around until 11pm for the headliner to come on. I drove 2 hours to see Ratatat at Shobox SoDo - I had to leave the venue early so I could catch the last ferry home. I expected to see the whole Ratatat set, with a "Doors at 8" ticket. Now, what I saw of Ratatat was enjoyable, even if it wasn't the best live concert I've ever seen. Next Time, Showbox/Ratatat, please put "With Special Guests" on the ticket - and I mean Short-Bus/Drool-cup sort of Special.

Ratatat is my FAVORITE artist. I was so excited for this show and I bought tickets on the first day they were available. I've never been able to attend a Ratatat show so this was my first one. The show itself was fun; I wasn't a huge fan of the opening acts, but they weren't really the reason why I went anyway. Both acts played way longer than I had anticipated - until after 10:30! I was ready for Ratatat to come out at 9 when the lights of the Showbox Sodo actually turned off. When Ratatat's set actually started, they performed perfectly. The lighting was great and everyone was having a great time. The reason why I give it 4 starts instead of 5 is mostly because I was surprised and disappointed that they didn't speak to the crowd at all and just walked off stage at the end of the set and the lights came on. It was sort of a lackluster finish for me, personally. Overall the music was amazing (obviously) and the crowd was great, but it sort of missed the mark for me a little bit. Perhaps I would have given this show 5 stars if it had been at a bigger venue.. but probably not.

    Awesome!!!

by TelleoStar on 9/16/10Showbox SODO - Seattle

My only complaint is that there was about an hour of nothing between covers, which I don't think needed to be there. The bands themselves were pretty awesome though, and Ratatat was, as one of my friends put it, mind-blowingly amazing.

    Hella amazing.

    by Mon4timm on 9/15/10Riviera Theatre - Chicago

Proposing that Ratatat was amazing really is an understatement. The band was incredible and they put on an unbelievable show. The openers were not that great, but it didn't even matter because when Ratatat arrived/began to play, the other bands had completely escaped my thoughts. Ratatat's sound replaced all thought while they were playing. Ratatat is easily one of the greatest bands that I have seen live.

    Ratatat live = Epic

    by Wolfman0504 on 9/15/10First Avenue - Minneapolis

I've seen a lot of good shows and I would absolutely put Ratatat in my top three. They were much more guitar driven than I expected which made it not only an awesome electronica show, but an awesome rock show as well. Their energy and the crowd's energy from them was just incredible. Not to mention they were playing at First Ave which is a great venue and was perfect for their sound. If I had to choose one word to describe Ratatat live it would be Epic.

    Ratatat rocked the house!

by AnnerJump on 9/13/10First Avenue - Minneapolis

The show was great! Ratatat is unstoppable! I did not care for the opening acts but the main attraction made it worth the wait. The best part (besides the music) was the incredible show of imagery projected onto plexiglass- so high def they looked like they were actually on stage! It was enthralling!

    Ratatat is great Live

by Pacmann on 9/13/10Riviera Theatre - Chicago

Ratatat, one of my favorite bands before the concert, has continued to be a band that I will listen to for as long as they provide my ears with the sound of music that makes me, at the very least, bob my head in rhythm. They put on a stellar show with fascinating lights, videos, and seemingly entire performances without saying but 3-4 sentences; Among these are, "thank you," and names of the songs. They have a great stage presence because they are silhouetted almost the whole concert due to lights behind them. They music is great and the sound team did a great job making the bass beats vibrate through the floor into your body. They play songs from all of their CDs regardless of featuring their newest album, and they are very worthwhile to see live. Bring friends and stay at least a bit coherent to soak in the whole experience. Also, the Riviera theater is a great venue, albeit a bit rundown but still beautiful and very spacious with bars EVERYWHERE!

    Ratatat was solid!

by Quietsig on 9/13/10First Avenue - Minneapolis

I've gone to First Ave for RATATAT before but this was more a polished show and the visuals were much updated. With vaporous apparitions of accompaniment on either side of the stage and an LED light show at their flanks, it was akin to what you’d see at much costlier shows. The performance itself was concentrated on the LP4 album with the occasional throwback injected for familiarity. The “Current” 89.3 was helpful in getting the word out there for this show and has had RATATAT in their catalogue for some time. Overall, I’d say the performance was brilliant.

    Ratatat: Sonic

by Enigmaticyolk on 9/12/10Riviera Theatre - Chicago

The show started off with an unforgettable vibe and flair of understated showmanship that is typical of the band. They played a great set and were wise to include "Seventeen Years". Ratatat still has it. They will always have it as long as they continue to perform so brilliantly.

    Ratatat ruled!

Ratatat puts on a unique show that nobody else can produce. Unforgettable guitar licks, trippy videos, and only two guys performing amazing songs! A definite see if you like rock, electronic, and hip hop beats.

Ratatat is so much better live. The light show just enhanced the entire experience. People were just grooving to the music and having a good time
