RAILROAD EARTH IN CONCERT:

Progressive bluegrass band Railroad Earth combines virtuosic musicianship, extensive improvisation, and psychedelic visuals to deliver a world-class concert experience that's rooted in tradition yet firmly forward-looking. The group's rootsy, Americana-infused sound takes on new dimensions at their live shows, where amplified mandolin, guitar, and lap steel combine to create a mind-blowing swirl of bluegrass instruments. The band totally rocks out as they bring tracks like "Elko" and the 15-minute "Like a Buddha" to life on tour, inspiring ear-to-ear grins and euphoric dancing among concertgoers.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

New Jersey-based Railroad Earth formed in 2010 around the songwriting of former From Good Homes frontman Todd Sheaffer. Under the guidance of manager Brian Ross, Sheaffer linked up with a group of talented bluegrass players, and the success of their initial jam sessions gave birth to Railroad Earth. Within several months the band had already released their debut album The Black Bear Sessions and performed at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, where their high-energy set knocked fans’ socks off and earned them a deal with Sugar Hill Records. In 2002 they released their sophomore album Bird In A House, supporting it with a string of boot-stomping performances that floored fans across the country, who began calling themselves “hobos” in honor of the band’s vintage Americana leanings. A string of popular albums followed throughout the ‘00s, and the band’s rigorous touring schedule in support of the releases established them as festival favorites. In 2014 Railroad Earth released their seventh album Last of the Outlaws, a critical success that led to a sold-out show at Red Rocks and a concert DVD release of the epic performance.

  • Amazing as always

by Pop on 1/2/25Jefferson Theater - CharlottesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic show and a great crowd. RRE never disappoints! Been attending their shows for seventeen years. For my money the best band to come along since Jerry Garcia passed!

  • I love this band.

by MaineiacMoose on 1/1/25Lincoln Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

This is one of my favorite bands and I love going to see them live. However the Lincoln Theater is not a great place to see them. The room is too small for the music. Unless you knew every word to every song all you heard was RailRoad Earth mumbled. I tried a couple locations in the venue it was pretty much the same anywhere I checked. I had multiple conversations with other fans about it and In was not alone in my assessment. There is a brilliant piece on this phenomena by David Byrne called how architecture helped music evolve. It’s a great piece that explains this much better than I can. ~S

  • Great performance, venue, poor acoustics

by Casey on 1/1/25Lincoln Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great performance from the band and show went on for nearly 3 hours! I love the theater, but sitting in the balcony we could not make out the words! Acoustics improved slightly as show went on, but I think owners need to invest in better sound support.

  • Great show, wish the club had reserved parking

by Shorty on 1/1/25Lincoln Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Really enjoyed the show. I saw them twice in the early 2000s and hadn't seen them since, and I was pleasantly surprised by how long and how late they played, especially given that they were beginning a two-night run in Charlottesville the next evening. If I had a critique about the experience, it was that there was no dedicated off-site parking for the show. When I saw Lukas Nelson and his band at the nearby 9:30 Club in November of 2023, the venue had reserved a private lot a short walk from the club and I parked there. For the RE show on Sunday night, I decided to take Metrorail to the show because of the venue's warning about the limited parking in the area and my general unfamiliarity with driving in Washington. Because the rail system stops running at midnight on Sundays, and because the band were still on stage, going strong, after 11:00 p.m., I had to leave as they were starting the song just before Mighty River, according to the setlist. I would have liked to have seen them play that song and the rest of the show, but I didn't want to take a chance on missing the last subway train out of the area, or missing the last Yellow Line train south out of L'Enfant Plaza. Wish I could have seen the entire show, but the uncertainty of finding parking near the venue altered my plans. I will definitely try to see Railroad Earth again and hope to drag some friends along.

  • The guys love to play

by Tom on 1/1/25Lincoln Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Really enjoyable and energetic show. Excellent efforts, especially Matt Slocum on the keys. The 3rd or 4th song in the first set was actually sounding pretty funky - really appropriate for DC's Lincoln Theater. For me to get a 5th star they would need to play one of their classics MR or SSM.

  • Always a Fantastic Show

by Chip on 11/17/24XL Live - HarrisburgRating: 5 out of 5

Ultra talented and tight band getting better while they age. Been following Railroad Earth for over 25 years and they never disappoint. Their brand of jam grass moves me like no other.

  • so disappointing

by HarryinOG on 7/8/24The Stone Pony - Asbury ParkRating: 2 out of 5

Got tickets for what was advertised as an outdoor show. The venue moved it inside at the last minute with almost no notice and absolutely no explanation for doing so and they also changed the start time. Got there at the original time that doors were to supposed to open and the first band had already started. So missed seeing a bunch of music I paid for. The indoors was totally packed and extremely hot and very uncomfortable. The only place to stand outside to try and get some air was the small deck where people were smoking. The venue only had a small speaker to try and listen to what was happening inside and a tv monitor that was smaller than ones you see in a lot of restaurant bathrooms! There were a lot of outdoor bathrooms set up to be used for the outdoor show but the majority of them were closed. Just a very bad experience from start to finish. Don’t see myself ever going to this venue again. Sad.

  • The music was great, the venue not so much

by Greenforest on 7/8/24The Stone Pony - Asbury ParkRating: 4 out of 5

The bands put on a wonderful show but we were extremely disappointed with the Stone Pony venue. We purchased tickets several months in advance to see this show at their outdoor summer stage but at the last minute they moved the show indoors. They did offer a refund but we already had lodging plans that could not be canceled. It was very crowded inside and not at all the type of experience that we were looking for (paid for). The weather was beautiful so we definitely could have been outside, it felt like they moved it just to maximize profit and not the experience of their patrons. I would definitely recommend staying far away from the Stone Pony, they are not what they used to be.

  • Intimate gathering

by Lex on 3/26/23The Vogel at Count Basie Center for the Arts - Red BankRating: 5 out of 5

It is always fun to see great artists in a small venue. Railroad Earth came ready to play. The crowd were all enthralled. The new Vogel is the perfect venue to allow people to fully enjoy a performance, dancing to the music. The mandolin player was inspired and the banjo/slide/guitar player was oozing talent. A terrific evening.

  • Really enjoyed seeing these guys.

by JEW on 3/25/23XL Live - HarrisburgRating: 5 out of 5

Have heard of Railroad Earth for years, but never seen them live. XL Live was a nice venue to see them, easy to find, good parking, decent venue to see a band. Friendly crowd. Bought a CD so I'll be ready next time I see them , by learning their songs.

  • Fun time

by JEW on 3/21/23XL Live - HarrisburgRating: 5 out of 5

Really enjoyed seeing these guys live. Bought a CD so next time I go to see them I will know some of their songs. Crowd was friendly and mellow, good sign of who the band is by the crowd they draw.

  • Amazing show !!!

by Bronson on 3/21/23XL Live - HarrisburgRating: 5 out of 5

A beautiful night with music that made you feel the love their music!!! Thank you Railroad Earth!!! Love you ALL!!!

  • Such a good, good time.....

by Tommy Boy on 1/31/23Jefferson Theater - CharlottesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

It's hard to put these experiences in words. Railroad Earth always gives you their best every time they're on stage. The crowd, the music and the lighting all combined for an unforgettable show. The Jefferson is the perfect venue. We sat in the balcony for the first time. There isn't a bad seat in the house. We had the perfect view of everything on stage. A couple got engaged in the middle of the show and Railroad Earth got to play along during the proposal. Can't wait to catch them again somewhere down the line.

  • Great show Railroad Earth

by gjd on 1/31/23The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

The band was great! I wish you would sell bottled water. The free water was over chlorinated and was undrinkable.

  • Incredible night of music, that I never wanted to stop!

by Kat on 1/26/23The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Welcoming venue, filled with decades of Rock posters, welcoming staff, lots of space & joyful crowd! Music was superb! Opening act, Holly Bowling, blew us all away. Her playing, was that of an entire orchestra! Loved opener, Franklin's Tower. Tim Carbone & every member of RRE, just shown! Hard to see new bass player, as I was in ADD section. Band merch sold by Fillmore employee; purchased the tour poster, not the yellow muddy colored shirts, then artist Aaron Webb walked in with his new RRE Batik shirts; absolutely excellent! Railroad lantern design=epic! Every song was sparkling & the encore was a surprise to me, a favorite, Catfish John. What a wonderful night, I look forward to more Railroad Earth concerts!

  • Awesome Band and venue!

by snod on 1/24/23Teragram Ballroom - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Gotta love venues that accept cash for drinks and merch! and dont treat you like a guilty criminal as you walk in! Unlike Dodger stadium concerts, So Fi, Youtube theater ect.

  • Great time

by Joe on 1/24/23Teragram Ballroom - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

RRE fans are like deadheads. They are into the music. I like how the band plays and how they bleed different genres of music. I will go an see them whenever I can make it work.

  • Great show, beautiful Venue, perfect sound.

by Kneadles on 1/23/23The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Railroad Earth really shined at the Fillmore! Many sing along songs, great jams, and getting Holly Bowling up there for Like a Buddha was just spectacular!

  • Enjoyed the show except for crowd chatter.

by dw on 1/23/23The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Love Railroad Earth but even better with Holly Bowling and wish she’d played the whole show. The crowd was terrible with talking through her whole set and when Railroad Earth wasn’t playing loud enough to drown them out. What is wrong with people!

  • Best band ever

by Railroad hobo on 1/23/23The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

If I could only see one band for the rest of eternity, these guys would be it
