About

AT THE DAWN OF A NEW CENTURY, everything is changing... and anything is possible. Direct from a sold-out extended run at the Kennedy Center, RAGTIME The Musical returns to Broadway in an acclaimed new production that’s as ravishing as it is relevant. Set in a volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, RAGTIME weaves together three distinctly American tales -- that of a stifled suburban mother, an inventive Jewish immigrant, and a daring young Harlem musician -- united by their courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future. Their compelling stories intertwine to form a rich tapestry of hopes and dreams, struggles and triumphs, rhythm and rhyme, set to an epic, Tony Award®-winning score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. A colossal stage show based on the classic E. L. Doctorow novel, RAGTIME also features a Tony Award-winning book by Terrence McNally, direction and choreography by Marcia Milgrom Dodge, and a vibrant cast.

    Ragtime is a MUST SEE!

by buckeyebagel on 11/8/09Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I just saw a preview of the new revival of Ragtime at the Neil Simon Theater. I think it's even better than the first time out. The only difference between the two productions is that the set is more scaled down and intimate, which makes the performances that much stronger. A prediction: This show is a can't miss for Best Rivival of a Musical Tony Award in 2010!!!!

    Ragtime Moved Me

by CathyLovesBroadway on 11/8/09Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I cried during the entire show ... NOT in a bad way. The show moved me so much that I had a true emotional connection and lost myself in the performance. And trust me ... I was not the only one wiping away tears. If you want to see a spectacular, well-acted, well-sung, moving Broadway experience, this is definitely one to see. This show should definitely win the Tony Award for best revival of a musical.

    Ragtime- No leftovers Here!

by MER10990 on 11/8/09Neil Simon Theatre - New York

THis was an excellent perfomrnace by a huge and varied cast - but very consistent in their INCREDIBLE energy - I had never seen this show before (during it's first incarnation) and was so glad I went this time. THere is so much in the book and a fabulous trip through the early 20th century. I took my 16 year old daughter and she LOVED it.

    Moving and Meaningful

by Prosebud on 11/8/09Neil Simon Theatre - New York

This revival is just as good, if not better, than the production that first came to Broadway over a decade ago. But the themes are timeless, thought provoking, and remain fresh. Wonderful performances by all. I highly recommend.

    Ragtime was outstanding!!!

by jacg46 on 11/8/09Neil Simon Theatre - New York

A fantastic musical with important messages. The veteran actors were great; but particularly noteworthy were those new to Bdwy-Coal.... & Sarah. This is one not to be missed. Loved it.

A more effective production than the last (12 years ago) despite the then star-studded cast: Brian Stokes Mitchell, Marin Mazzie, and Audra McDonald. Bring a box of tissues!

Incredible revival of a great show! Everything - the staging, costumes and performances breathed new life into the show. If you're going to see a show this season - this is a must.

    Ragtime was simply amazing!

by Kellbell487 on 11/8/09Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Ragtime has once again taken the stage in New York, and you should not miss it! The music is absolutely timeless, and the story is beautiful. The actors all did a fabulous job, especially those making their Broadway debut. The sets are minimal and somewhat interpretive, but it works well as it allows the main focus to remain on the actors and the events. The show tugs at all emotions, and the theme is one of hope, change, and acceptance. It is such an appropriate show to see now. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something new to see! Leave the little ones at home as it is not quite appropriate for those of a younger crowd. Overall, Ragtime was amazing; a very touching and emotional show that should not be missed!

    Emotional gutwrench

by PaulPavel on 11/8/09Neil Simon Theatre - New York

A rare events in which this huge cast were ALL top notch. Their guts were left on stage, and the voices were as good, or BETTER than the original, and the original had Marin Mazzie, Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell. I actually had tears on my cheek a great deal of the time, and I do NOT cry at plays. We will see more than 100 plays this year. Just a thrilling night of theatre, in which this play will win a Tony for best musical revival, and many individual's. The actors for Coalhouse, Mother and most particularly Bobby Steggert as younger brother will be nominees, and Steggert will become another name like Esparza, Schreiber and Fiennes who we will go to see no matter the venue. This touches the heart AND the brain. Run to see it.

    Different but spectacular!

by EBNJ on 11/8/09Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I was expecting a more direct comparison of the lives of Joplin & Berlin but was very pleased with the historical presentation of NYC and the music. The scenery and presentation were spectacular!!

    Ragtime- an excellent, moving production

by koosh on 11/8/09Neil Simon Theatre - New York

This is a very fine production of an important piece of musical theater. The music and dancing are wonderful, the singing is first rate, the set works beautifully to move the story along. The acting is very good. Just a few quibbles - I've read they "streamlined" this production from the original 1998 version. I did not see the original. I wonder if some of the streamlining has somewhat diminished the drama in two of the sections where I would expect to feel more emotionally touched. However, that really is just a quibble for a very fine production that deserves a long run. Highly recommended.

    Best performance on Broadway

by Namewitheld on 11/8/09Neil Simon Theatre - New York

Ragtime is perfect: singing, staging, acting, story, tempo, cheoreography, and sets. Every detail seemed indisputably handled. What a joy! I saw the original Ragtime many years ago and liked it. But this production is deeper in its telling of the story and richer in its music.

this new production of RAGTIME was fantastic.

by writer1 on 11/8/09Neil Simon Theatre - New York

I saw the original production of Ragtime in it's Broadway run. I liked it, but didn't love it, despite the starpower of Brian Stokes Mitchell and Marin Mazzie who were both wonderful. That said, this Kennedy Center production, streamlined and compact, is a truly memorable theatrical experience. I feel that contemporary audiences rise to their feet to give a standing ovation to everything, which diminishes genuine excellence. Suffice to say, I stood to applaud at the conclusion for the first time in a year. The actors portraying Mother, Coalhouse and Sarah delivered starmaking performances. As I mentioned to my wife as we exited the theater, this was a show I'd see again in a heartbeat.
