About

Radiohead in Concert

Radiohead introduced itself with a shot heard ‘round the world — a hiccup of distortion that thrust us into the fuzz-blasted chorus of 1993's "Creep." That self-loathing anthem became one of the defining singles of the alternative-rock revolution, but the Oxford, U.K., quintet were quick to distance themselves from the post-grunge histrionics of their hit single. On their 1995 sophomore release, ‘The Bends,' the band proved they could craft songs as elegant and majestic as the Britpop chart-toppers of the day, but with a more finely tuned ear for cinematic texture. That latent exploratory tendency would flourish on 1997's future-shocked ‘Ok Computer,' an epic meditation on pre-millennial tension and encroaching technocracy; the album transformed Radiohead into the most celebrated rock band in the world. But while that staggering achievement would count as an indisputable career peak for any other band, in Radiohead's case, they were just getting warmed up.

With the dizzying double shot of ‘Kid A' (2000) and ‘Amnesiac' (2001), the band entered a fascinating new phase. Taking cues from the fractured electronica of the Warp Records label and avant-garde icons like Can and Miles Davis, Radiohead refashioned themselves as studio scientists subjecting their songs to radical explorations in dissonant texture and hypnotic rhythms, often reducing frontman Thom Yorke's famously dramatic voice to a subliminal detail in the process. Even as they drifted back toward traditional rock sounds on subsequent releases like ‘Hail to the Thief' (2003) and ‘In Rainbows' (2007), they were shot through an experimental filter, and ultimately driven more by feel than form. And while their 2016 release, ‘A Moon Shaped Pool,' eased off the electronics to highlight guitarist Jonny Greenwood's growing prowess as an orchestral arranger (cultivated through his sideline career as an Oscar-nominated film composer), it retained the distinctly disorienting quality of the band's 21st-century output. But no matter how far out into left field they venture on record, Radiohead have remained a compelling, crowd-pleasing live act, making their most outré material sound like perfectly natural arena-rock fodder, and coaxing out their songs' burbling rhythmic undercurrents into club-worthy danceable grooves.

    Once in a lifetime

by ParanoidDroid on 10/2/11Roseland Ballroom - New York

This show was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. There are a few times in pop culture history that a generation gets to witness an artist that changes their artform forever. Radiohead is one of those bands. It was what i can only imagine seeing The Beatles, Hendrix or Led Zeppelin would have been like. The sound system was masterfully engineered, everything was bumping but never hurt your ears. The kick drums would punch so hard on cuts like Lotus Flower but never distorted. The venue was excellent and I was so grateful to see a band that is so iconic in such an intimate environment. My only regret was that the night had to end. Simply put, i doubt that Radiohead will do a show like this many times more, but if you have a chance to see them play ANYWHERE, i urge you to go. You will not be disappointed.

    life changing

by kaylee70 on 10/2/11Roseland Ballroom - New York

radiohead is my favorite band ever. good luck trying to find a video/article/quote on them that i have not seen or read. waited outside the roseland ballroom for 6+ hours, endured two dj's for another 2 hours, then an opener, and finally radiohead. TOTALLY worth it. it was my first time seeing them. if anything, my only regret was that i did not buy tickets to see them on wednesday as well. crowd was great - people were chill and friendly. i did not need to be intoxicated in any way to enjoy or feel the emotion of the show. words can't describe.

radiohead's maturity as a band is impressive, and boy, was it on display in Roseland's "intimate" setting. Great show.

    Performance of a lifetime

by lifesAnOcean on 10/2/11Roseland Ballroom - New York

While I'd seen Radiohead many times prior to this show, nothing could have prepared me for what I saw that night. The band were on a sort of warm-up performance for the KoL album but warm-up wasn't necessary. They were tight and Thom was on such top form that my core was shaken. I suspect I may have seen the best live performance ever.

    overwhelmingly happy

by how9to9reappear on 1/27/10The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

can a group alter your state of being or dictate how your week will evolve? only a few groups can have this effect and radiohead does it for me. the intimate setting and relaxed atmosphere. the ability to see the group interact and play off each other. thom's voice was so spot on-it swelled, it chimed, it sent shivers and warmed all at once. ed hamming it up in our direction and at the end throwing his pick to the youngster in front of us was priceless. no other group relays the human condition so poignantly and to my ears/brain communicates this so clearly. this was a once in a lifetime experience. 3 days out and I am currently experiencing radiohead withdrawals.
