Radiohead in Concert
Radiohead introduced itself with a shot heard ‘round the world — a hiccup of distortion that thrust us into the fuzz-blasted chorus of 1993's "Creep." That self-loathing anthem became one of the defining singles of the alternative-rock revolution, but the Oxford, U.K., quintet were quick to distance themselves from the post-grunge histrionics of their hit single. On their 1995 sophomore release, ‘The Bends,' the band proved they could craft songs as elegant and majestic as the Britpop chart-toppers of the day, but with a more finely tuned ear for cinematic texture. That latent exploratory tendency would flourish on 1997's future-shocked ‘Ok Computer,' an epic meditation on pre-millennial tension and encroaching technocracy; the album transformed Radiohead into the most celebrated rock band in the world. But while that staggering achievement would count as an indisputable career peak for any other band, in Radiohead's case, they were just getting warmed up.
With the dizzying double shot of ‘Kid A' (2000) and ‘Amnesiac' (2001), the band entered a fascinating new phase. Taking cues from the fractured electronica of the Warp Records label and avant-garde icons like Can and Miles Davis, Radiohead refashioned themselves as studio scientists subjecting their songs to radical explorations in dissonant texture and hypnotic rhythms, often reducing frontman Thom Yorke's famously dramatic voice to a subliminal detail in the process. Even as they drifted back toward traditional rock sounds on subsequent releases like ‘Hail to the Thief' (2003) and ‘In Rainbows' (2007), they were shot through an experimental filter, and ultimately driven more by feel than form. And while their 2016 release, ‘A Moon Shaped Pool,' eased off the electronics to highlight guitarist Jonny Greenwood's growing prowess as an orchestral arranger (cultivated through his sideline career as an Oscar-nominated film composer), it retained the distinctly disorienting quality of the band's 21st-century output. But no matter how far out into left field they venture on record, Radiohead have remained a compelling, crowd-pleasing live act, making their most outré material sound like perfectly natural arena-rock fodder, and coaxing out their songs' burbling rhythmic undercurrents into club-worthy danceable grooves.
The concert was a fantastic and emotional experience. Radiohead was on point!
Insane show. Radiohead never fails to amaze me. I wish I went to the first night!!!
Honestly, I never knew someone's vocals could be so perfect. Thom Yorke put me in a trans, everything about the performance from the vocals to the instruments, the backing vocals to the visuals, were all perfect. I definitely need to go to another!
Best concert I've been to in a long time. Radiohead was amazing.
Radiohead did not disappoint. They had a great balance of new and old from their large catalogue. Best part of the show was the guitar riffs during Decks Dark. The light show during Burn the Witch was also spectacular.
Paid a good amount to attend and left after 6 songs...Radiohead must be messing with their fans with that setlist
I've seen Radiohead 8 time prior to this show. My first was in 2001 at MSG in NYC. I've been to Coachella Bonnaroo New Jersey Massachusetts Philadelphia. This was by far the best show I've ever seen by them. After 17 years they just keep getting better. They continue to take from their wealth of material and make each song still sound fresh new and relevant. They perform to the highest caliber and take joy in it as well. For anyone who has never seen them I recommend going. And to fans who have I tell them they are Radiohead this is what they do.
Best concert I've ever been to. The quality of sound and lights, in addition to the crowd's energy and band's genius... all extraordinary. My 14-year-old son and I were blown away: I've been waiting my whole life for this concert and this has set the bar for him. I wish I had the time and money to follow them around the world.
An absolute blast of a show. Thom’s vocals were incredible and the band sounded great. Was mesmerized by how they create the sounds they do. One of my favorite concerts I’ve ever attended.
Been a Radiohead fan since 1987, seen every tour and this was their best show yet! It’s been 7 years since they were last here in Boston, A band that 20 something years old, and are playing somehow more vigorously and passionately than ever! It was the second night and was a sold out show, and we had looked at the previous set lists. Well, they blew it up tonight! Played all kinds of favorites and deeper cuts. They actually played my first favorite Radiohead song, the Bends!! It rocked our faces off! Paranoid Android was a surprise, as well as Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, Talk Show Host (!), Exit Music and House of Cards. The new stuff fit right in, especialy Ful Stop and Numbers. Thom Yorke’s voice is seemingly timeless, singing more beautifully and powerfully all these years later! Only minor quibble was their sound, which was nice and boomy, Yorkes voice was loud and clear over them, although Johnny Greenwoods guitar could’ve been way louder. Very rare for a Radiohead show, plus we had seats of the way back of the arena. Radiohead somehow seems more invigorated than ever, and if you skipped seeing them for a few years, and you still love their music, don’t be foolish, go see Radiohead!!
They were good. If you are a fan, the concert would be great for you!
I went to Radiohead @ the Boston Garden July 29 & it was absolutely spectacular. They are just so heavy that I couldn’t put it into good words. This is coming from someone who’s seen Paul McCartney 7 times, The Rolling Stones 6 times, Tom Petty twice, Bob Dylan twice, U2 4 times, REM twice, Ringo Starr twice, Lenny Kravitz 3 times, The Black Keys twice, My Morning Jacket twice, Neil Young, Little Richard, The Talking Heads, Van Morrison, The Beach Boys, Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, Alabama Shakes, as well I had seen Radiohead 6 times already going into night 2 at the Boston Garden. I always felt they were the best show I had ever seen, but after this past show, they’re just getting better as they get older. I can’t believe how heavy they are. Everything else is just a good warmup act.
‘Nuff said. Unreal music ability from the band combined with a crazy light show puts you in a trance.
What can I say, I waited 17 years to see Radiohead and they did not disappoint. Incredible musicians who put on an amazing show with great lighting and sound, even in a big arena like TD Garden. Some of my favorites were 15 Step, Spinning Plates, Talk Show Host...but really they were all good. I would definitely see them again.
These guys are in top form after 25 years. I've seen them 6 times and this was there best show.
Amazing. I may never listen to their music again, but this show was outstanding. Incredible experience.
Incredible as always!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very disappointed with Radiohead. The set list was very strange. They neglected to play their biggest hits and the fans weren't into it.
I was a little skeptical about the show beforehand (I know that Radiohead can get a little esoteric, and I had heard that they were "terrible" the night before), but I thoroughly enjoyed taking the journey with them (and the crowd). Great sounds and visuals, and at least a couple of "familiar" tunes made this a great evening, and wouldn't hesitate to see them again. I'm sure the reviews of the show will vary wildly, but you can definitely put me in the plus column. My seats were in the Loge area not too far from the stage. I'm glad I didn't opt for the GA floor, since that looked pretty crowded and there's always someone taller in front of you. I still had to stand up, however, but that was because the rest of the section (and the entire venue) were standing up. Great energy and a great night.
Great great performance from the greatest bad on earth
