Solid openers, bad sound made PTM a total waste

by Scott on 12/9/22Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

Beach Bunny and Bob Moses were great openers but sound for Portugal the Man was terrible. We wound up leaving after 2 songs. Not sure if this is due to PTM's sound crew or the Aragon, but you guys can't let that happen. Worth noting was surprisingly quick entry with the new metal detector system. I'm not sure it would actually stop someone from coming in with a weapon, but hey, I guess there wasn't a line...

    Underwhelmed

by Musiclover on 12/9/22Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

I got tickets for Twisted Xmas with Portugal. The Man headlining at the Aragon Ballroom when they first went on sale. I saw Portugal. The Man there in 2018 and they nailed it, so naturally I was expecting a great show. Unfortunately due to the combination of multiple factors, this was not the case. First, things that effect everyone that may have been due to the show's presenters: 1. The same tickets that I bought when they first went on sale were later advertised as 2 for the price of 1. If it is still profitable to offer tickets at a 50% mark down then why not spread the holiday cheer from the start? 2. If you want to see the headliner be warned. At this Xmas show the openers both played an hour or so. (Q101, what happened?) The show started at 7:00, and with the change over between sets Portugal. The Man ended up starting at 9:44. At 10:48 they said the venu had a hard stop time, and it felt like they pulled an audible and skipped ahead to finish with one of their hits. Some things that do not effect everyone: 1. Accessibility. If you are like me you have injured yourself since the last time you were at the Aragon and have forgotten that the bathrooms are on the ground level. In addition to get to the stage area you need to climb stairs. I don't have a wheelchair or crutches that make it obvious I am having trouble so it still feels odd asking for assistance. Once upstairs I did see what I assume is a service elevator since I saw no access from the ground level in the public spaces. 2. It was HOT. I expect this at a standing room only show in December when the heat is on too, but it was intense. I got to the show nice and early so I could stand with my back to the sound booth and have a good vantage point. About half way through the show, while standing/leaning there a woman emerged from the crowd and collapsed on me. A little while later a man went down to my left. In both cases the response from the venu staff was immediate, but possibly preventable. The moral: stay hydrated and know water is $5 a can. My last rant, and this is just my opinion. Personally, I was not aware of or a fan of Beach Bunny before the show. I can say with certainty that they did not match the sound of the other 2 groups, and I did not enjoy the set. Bob Moses, I really enjoyed the songs that I had heard on the radio... I was missing out. This set rocked, in particular songs that i was not familiar with. When Portugal. The Man came on things started ok, but something was off. The sound was all over the place and there was some feedback that disrupted a couple of songs before it was sorted out. This contributed to feeling underwhelmed when they only had an hour of stage time. Having seen them before this was out of character, and I look forward to their next show. Everyone has a bad day. One cool addition since I last saw them was the additional back up singers and saxophone player. He nailed his solo.

    Sound was horrible.

by Kt on 12/9/22Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

Bob Moses sound was ok. Portugal was horrible. Couldn’t hear singer, screeching feedback noises coming from mics, really really bad, and they didn’t even play any of their covers, but not like I could hear them if they did. Never seen so many people leave a show. Aragon need a major upgrade, not sure why they didn’t do that during Covid. Shame.

    Pure Disappointment

by Al on 12/9/22Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

I love Portugal. The. Man. and yet this was the worst time I’d seen them. You could not make out a single word they said after the second song, up until the last two songs. Not to mention it was predominately a jam session. Just overall, disappointing.

    Headliner was disappointing

by R2D2 on 12/9/22Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

Beach Bunny was fun. Bob Moses was amazing. The sound was good and the crowd was going. Portugal The Man was bad. 4 vocalists and another 6 people playing instruments, and you couldn't hear any vocals and good luck distinguishing the instruments. It was a loud mess. We were halfway through a song I like before I could even tell what it was. Could be bad acoustics at the Aragon, could have been the sound guy. I don't care. I just know it was super disappointing and we left before the end.

    Horrible Sound

by Twisted Xmas Sucked on 12/9/22Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

I went to the Portugal the man show and have never been to a more inaudible show in my life. Sounded like every note was being played on top of one another. Fire the sound production guy and give refunds to the fans, that was terrible!

    Terrible Sound!

by PEP on 12/9/22Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

Ended up leaving along with many others. Just a loud mess of sound. Or lets call it noise. Way to many adverts too. I'm a captive audience and have already paid for a ticket and now am subjected to a bombardment of advertisements. It was obnoxious. Bottom line, I'm just not going to anymore Live Nation venues.

    Poor audio issues

by Grundlemustard on 12/9/22Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

Unsure wether it was an issue with Q101, the Aragon, or Portugal the man but there was really really bad audio issues for the Portugal the man set.

Last radio winterfest ill go to.

by Milkman69 on 12/9/22Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

I have been to a bunch of the radio sponsored shows before and loved them and i would probably have to be paid to go again after this week. From the commercials being played limiting set times to just the awful corporate feel of the event made me sick. Hard pass and good luck moving forward.
