  • PIL at Hammerstein Ballroom was excellent

by MisterCranetown on 10/15/12Manhattan Center Hammerstein Ballroom - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Saw this current lineup two years ago and promised myself to see them again when they returned to NYC. I've seen PIL a few times over the years, and this current ensemble is outstanding. New album is very good, and older catalog arrangements were great. danced for the entire show.

Personally I think they are better than ever John Lydon & the boys blew me away. I've seen that a few times over a 30 year span now and this time was the best

They are amazing musicians, sorry Mr. Lydon I know you dislike labels. The best live performance this year.

  • Disappointed

by Roosterocker on 10/11/12Music Hall of Williamsburg - BrooklynRating: 1 out of 5

Johnny needs to do his homeworking before making people pay 50 bucks for that old man jamming garbage I was put through. Ruined my birthday a bit.

This is what I wanted. This is what I got: A professional, empassioned, meaningful performance. I was not 'Disappointed'. I was elevated. Thank you Mr. Lydon & Company

  • Music(?) not for the faint of heart or hearing!

by Crabboy on 5/21/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

My ears just stopped ringing after 24 hours. Johnny Rotten (as he is again referring to himself) is riviting. You almost can't take your eyes off him. Robotic in his movements, gargling with brandy and spitting into some trash can, threatening the jackass who spit at him, his wailing for almost 2 1/2 hours was nothing short of amazing. The updated version of the band is quite good. If I had to describe the actual 'music', I guess it's a combination of dub meets screaching rock, but that doesn't do it justice. The BASS, always the main focus of PiL, grabs and holds and doesn't let go. If you see them, I highly recommend you buy earplugs. You won't need them until he begins his rant to introduce Religion. When he demands more bass from the sound man, be careful. It's like getting punched in the gut so hard the air actually thickens. When you think it can't possibly get louder, it does. But even that pales before the final encore, Open Up. Then you'll thank me for the heads up. Believe me, 1/2 the crowd were holding their ears. It's like being next to a jet engine in a violent thunderstorm. I've seen The Who, Zeppelin, and Lee Michaels up close and this was more overpoweing. The highlights for me were This Is Not A Love Song (set opener), Annalisa, Warrior, Flowers of Romance, Death Disco, and Chant., although pretty much everything but Sun was great. Enjoy the show!

John Lydon and the boys are taking all of the right Vitamins for self preservation. They outlasted my 30 something wife and I. Played a long set w/ 3 encores of all of the oldies and newer hits. Johnny seemes to be in awesome form and sounded amazing. I had read a bit about his awful voice, but I felt that he sounded like a diva. There was politics in his banter (talking about religion and the Bush years), which was a little lost on our audience, but made up for it with the incredible sound generated. Williamsburg Hall of Music is such an awesome venue. Incredible audio and no bad views even from behind the soundboard. Catch PiL wherever you can, it will blow your mind!

  • Energyless Crowd

    by EMoney123 on 5/20/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I went to see PIL. Last time they toured I was in high school and that was a while ago. However, I really expected the crowd to have more energy. Johnny Lydon had more energy and he's older than anyone in the room. Granted, I think the average age of the crowd was 45 but everyone didn't seem excited to be there. Maybe most people were saving their energy for the taped concert the next night. I think PIL also saved the best songs for that night. They played well but I would've liked more of the high energy angrier songs and didn't get that with this show. Basically I was "Disappointed" at the crowd.

  • Public Image - One of the Best

by bluenosebeard1 on 5/20/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

John Lydon may be the best performer I have ever seen. This show was unbelievable. His voice has not lost any of its primal virtuosity. Can't wait for the documentary on the band to come out.

  • PIL: top of their game

by CBCrabman on 5/20/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

PIL in Williamsburg was a truly great show. The nearly 2.5 hr set made up for the terrible 2 hrs of DJ treacle that preceded it. Johnny Rotten/Lydon still has the chops and the attitude (nice job threatening to smash the face of a spitter!) and tell it like it is ("I'd tell you you all look as good as ever, but I'd be lying"). Solid set from start to finish with highlights of Love Song, Public Image, Flowers of Romance, Religion, Tie to me to the Length of That & Warrior (others may differ in faves). Alas, Johnny sped off w/o signing anything. Do you ever get the feeling you've been swindled? Not me last night! My ears are still ringing (which is a good thing)

  • Pil was great

by bigfatscout on 5/20/10Music Hall of Williamsburg - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

That show was really great, I love that venue, great location, easy parking, lots of bars and places to sit and anywhere you wind up you can still see, because its small. Johnny was awesome his voice, gestures, movements are incredible. It sounded really good too, not too loud or distorted.
