About

PUBLIC ENEMY IN CONCERT:

Hip hop pioneers and modern day rap legends Public Enemy are still bringing the noise, nearly three decades after establishing themselves as "Public Enemy No. 1" with their 1987 debut single. Flavor Flav and crew had game then and they got game now, keeping classic rap alive as they continue to 'scream vocal javelins' at the right enemies and innovate on the one's and two's. Following their 2013 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Public Enemy will "Fight the Power" on their 2014 tour dates, including a highly anticipated appearance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Where would the rap game be without the power and profundity of Long Island's Public Enemy? Formed in the early '80s by MC Chuck D and his irascible hype-man Flavor Flav, the group set out to add a political message to the aggressive style of hip hop made famous by Run DMC. Joined by MC Professor Griff and DJ Terminator X, Public Enemy ascended to astronomical heights with 1988 sophomore album It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. The record, anchored by the single "Don't Believe the Hype" became the first hip hop album to gain mainstream recognition, landing at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The rest is history.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Hands down top 3 hip hop shows I have ever seen! AWESOME!"

"Excellent concert! High energy and Public Enemy KILLED IT!

"That was a great show to be able to watch, I love that hip hop is alive and well...Chuck D is an amazing MC, the way he hosted the show and showed the local talent so much love was one of the best feeling I got this year at a show."

Hung Out With the Best Hip-Hop Gods

by MsBabyNewYear on 8/13/15Sahlen's Stadium - Rochester

My husband and I drove 7 hours to see Public Enemy. We stopped at Wal-mart so I could get a red marker for an autograph with PE. I got that and so much more. The VIP pass was well worth it. We were in the front row and had free drinks and food most of the day. I took great pictures and got autographs with all the performers except Chubb Rock (left early). All of them were very nice to me, including mean ass Ed Lover who did a great job MCing for hours. From 2-103:30ish they didn't seemed bothered by all the picture/autograph request from us fans. Keith Murray was super hyped and excited to be on stage with PE.. I even have a picture of him kissing me on the cheek. Loved the Heavy D tribute by Kool Moe Dee. My friends hate me because I took a pictures with Play, Treach and Method Man. To see that Redman and Meth are still close friends was inspiring (I remember when they had a TV show). Kid & Play were awesome and nice. Scarface is not from NY but really enjoyed himself with his peers. It was great to see Das EFX and Brand Nubian perform . I was able to take great pictures of/with DJ Kool spinning. Chuck D is the nicest guy. He hung out with us the whole day. There performance was so hyped and motivating. The people putting on the venue were awesome, great job sistah Tangie. The downsides: My friends & Co-workers hate me. No Geto Boys; the VIP perks were not as listed: no cover, and AC and the stars were not in the tent that had VIP access (Yes, I snuck to All Access side). I ran into a lady who couldn't buy VIP tix, but there was so much more available space on the VIP side. I also expected more people to be in attendance with this awesome line up. PE is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They sell out in Europe but not at home, really. I would do it again if I could be treated like that again and hang out with these Hip-Hop Gods.

The show was outstanding. Always nice to be with my people when they know how to act. I will definitely be back next year. Hopefully we can get Eric B. Rakim to come out next year!

A good Collection of Old School Acts

by Doletrain on 8/11/15Sahlen's Stadium - Rochester

I'm a big fan of classic Hip Hop and I had a good time at this show! This was my second "ROC Summer Explosion". The previous year had a better line up, but this one was very good. Chubb Rock, Keith Murray, Das EFX, Brand Nubian, Kool Moe Dee, Scarface (but no Geto Boys), Naughty By Nature, Redman & Method Man and Public Enemy! Ed Lover and DJ Backspin provided entertainment between acts ...... which was sometimes longer than it should have been. This was a lonnnnnngggggg show. I like to see as many acts as possible, but sitting in the sun from 1:00 to 11:00 at night was draining, lol .... I actually skipped out on the end of Public Enemy's act which is the act I was most interested in. There were a few drops in music due to tech. difficulties too. Bonuses were - Kool Moe Dee brought out his old bandmates from the Treacherous Three and brought out one of the Funky Four, Meth & Redman brought out Street Lyfe, Chubb Rock & Kool Moe Dee spoke a lot of Hip Hop history. Most acts played their bigger hits .... if they do this next year, I hope they tighten up the schedule so there is less down time before acts.

    Old school hip hop

    by Nikki123123 on 8/11/15Sahlen's Stadium - Rochester

The concert was so nice the weather was amazing, which made the show even more enjoyable. I wanted to give a quick shout out to Method Man he took the time out to take a quick photo with me and my cousin right before he went on stage even though he was getting rushed. Also wanted to say all of the artist were very friendly and willing to take time out to speak with and take photos. Last but not least met flav at the end of the night where he was in his zone listening to some music and can I say his new music is the bomb and I can't wait for the world to hear it.

Old school hip hoppers on one stage!

by NickyNickname on 8/11/15Sahlen's Stadium - Rochester

The groups and rappers were great! They showed us that they stil have it. I enjoyed seeing them, especially Method Man and RedMan. Naughty by Nature were my second favorite act of the evening. What I WILL say is that I could've done without Ed Lover and his little sidekick (didn't catch his name). Ed Lover was the "MC" of the evening and also fancied himself a comedian. We had to sit and endure his sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and just overall rude "jokes" in between acts. I know that hip hop/rap, as a genre, can be mysoginystic and homophobic (which is not cool), but Ed Lover didn't need to go above and beyond to remind us of that with his tasteless "humor". I would've given this show a higher rating if it weren't for the unfortunate choice in MC.

Hip Hop in Rochester is always lacking.

    by Doozer420 on 8/11/15Sahlen's Stadium - Rochester

This lineup was amazing! Legends and icons filled the stage. Now, like every concert I've ever been to, the schedule was way off of what was "expected". Artists that were scheduled to come on at 4pm, came on at 6:45.... stuff like that. But that is par for the course. The stadium was a great place for this event. Lots of room, open air, not too tight of security. I liked that. Even beer was reasonably priced ($7 for a 16oz heineken) Then there was the music. Each act that I saw (missed the first 3) sounded good. Love the acoustics at this venue. My biggest concern, and this was the same as when I saw Wu Tang a couple years ago in Rochester, was that the crowd lacked energy. Each artist seemed to stop the show to try and get the crowd amped up, however, to no avail. Mind you, I am 32, and I was one of the younger ones there, so understandably, the "older" crowd wasn't screaming and yelling and jumping around. This did have an effect on the artists. Method Man straight up stopped the show a couple times, urging the crowd to get into it, and [we] failed as a crowd. You could tell the artists didn't give it their all, or play a full set, because the crowd was lame. I was surprised to see Method Man and Redman come back to Rochester after the Wu Tang show a couple years ago. I'm glad they came back. They put on a good show, for what they did and got out of the crowd. Public Enemy was awesome! They brought a lot of energy (helps having Flavor Flav hyping the crowd) and their set was the best of the night. Played almost everything I wanted to hear, and minimized the newer stuff.

    Roc Summer Explosion

by Anonymous on 8/11/15Sahlen's Stadium - Rochester

It was a great show once they got going. The artist kept the show live and pumping. The MC kept the showing rolling as much as they could control. The audience participation was great.

    Could have been better

by MrsChocolatte on 1/29/15Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic City

The show this year was ok I've been going every year for the past couple of years and this one was a complete disappointment. It was very unorganized and public enemy was the worst since when did they become a punk rock band.

It was off the hook. We loved it and it started on time. KRS ONE should have been right before the headliner. He is much better than Naughty by Nature and should have been able to sing all of his songs along with MC Lyte. The line up should have been Special Ed, Naughty by Nature, Mc Lyte, Big Daddy KANE, KRS ONE, and Public Enemy.

not all what it could have been

by shetee on 1/23/15Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic City

the concert started on time, special ed was good, he only did a few songs which were his hits back in the day, mc lyte in my opinion was a highlight of the tour, big daddy kane was also a highlight, expecially at the end when he did that memorable split! amazing! krs one came out strong but..too much talking in between, naughty by nature, did not enjoy their performance at all, sat down the whole time, and the show stopper, public enemy should nt have even been reffered to as that! they turned all of their music into rock songs, just not right! we left before the end of their performance. overall the concert had two high highlight performers, mc lyte and big daddy kane

    EPIC!

by hairhoney on 1/22/15Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic City

the show started on time, the artists were phenomenal! I have been every year they had this concert and this concert was one of the best only thing I wish Doug E fresh was there! Now I dI'd take a star away because they oversold our tickets! They sold our seats to someone else even though we had the tickets but customer service was able to get us to on the floor which made it much uber dope.

This concert was truly fun! My husband and I really enjoyed ourselves. ALL the artists were so energetic! All the artists spoke on love, unity and respect for one another. KRS 1 went in, I love Naughty By Nature and Treach did his thang. PE live band was cool and Flava Flav was the funniest! It was also cool to see Funk Master Flex do his thang as well. Over all the WHOLE show was HOTT!

    epic

by ari3ll3 on 1/21/15Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic City

Took my boyfriend here for his birthday and made a getaway trip out of it. Loved the joy on his face while he reminisced on hip hop. In fact, I loved the energy from the stage throughout the stadium, there was hardly anybody in their seat.
