I felt like I was watching Marvin in the flesh!!!

by Demetrius Lovejoy on 6/25/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

The experience was amazing! The music, The Actors, The storyline, and The vocals blew me away. It was like watching the actual Marvin as I sat trying to figure out how they found 2 actors who look identical to him with perfect vocals to match!!! I was thoroughly pleased with the production.

Great performance. Story well told. Different Marvin's for the various decade's of his career. Songs performed were amazing. I can't think of 1 song that was missed. Great cast

    Loved the music !!

by Audioguy on 6/24/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

The show it self was very entertaining and we learned some things about Marvin Gaye I had not known. And some incredible singers played the various parts. Thoroughly enjoyable. BUT, unlike any other play or musical I have attended (Broadway or other places), the audience acted more like it was an outdoor concert rather than an indoor play. People were talking all around us during the entire performance and most disturbingly, there were folks all over the auditorium who felt it was OK to get up any time and leave and return, disturbing anyone who might be around them. It continued during the entire performance, which took away a lot of our enjoyment. Given that has never happened in any other venue, I'm confused why it was allowed to occur in this one. I would give the show 3.5 stars but the overall experience 1.5 stars

    disappointed

    by B. A. on 6/24/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

The Singers where very talented but the dialogue was very cheesy, it was the quality of a High School production. I take that back I have been to High School productions that were better, no question the talent was there need to work on the dialogue.

    Great Music

by C. on 6/24/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

The music was great. Overall, the scenes really should be/could be tightened up. There was no playbill so, I guessed that this performance was still "in the works". Trying things out early & planning to tighten up after some tweaking. Actors were good, music incredible but . . . needs work.

    Definitely a point of view

    by S. P. on 6/24/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

This production could use a little more work. It is certainly from the point of view of an adorning son of his mother. The cast is very talented. However, it must not be a union show as there is no playbill or program offered.

Low Budget Production with a Medium Price

by Disappointed on 6/24/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

For starters it was held in a theater that is antiquated. Poor ventilation, Broken Seats, along with confused staff concerning policy. The story line was good but the music was off beat at times. I have always been a fan of Marvin Gaye and felt that no one could sing on his level, therefore I should not comment on the singers performance. My opinion because it was held at this venue (Chicago Theater) the play attracted an unpleasant crown, Loud and obnoxious audience hecklers and video recorders. I witnessed the usher instruct a patron serval times not to record the performance, they both were distracting. Our seats were over $200.00 only to witness a $100.00 Musical at a very disappointing theater.

    Pride and Joy was great!

by Trina on 6/23/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

I bought the tickets as a gift for my parents. They were excited and happy to see the musical of the great late Marvin Gaye come to life! They really enjoyed the overall experience.

    Pride & Joy

    by D. M. on 6/23/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

It was mostly good. I just didn’t care for how the timeline of events was executed. It’s like there were no solid transitions. The early half had quite a bit of singing songs that weren’t relevant (in my opinion). But overall it was fairly good.

    GREAT music and voices!!!

by MILK on 6/22/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

First of all, the SEATS at the Chicago Theatre are EXTREMELY uncomfortable!!! Pride and Joy is a fun musical but still needs a little work. In the beginning I felt like I was watching a "community theater" production! The set changes had extremely long "black outs". The second act was far more entertaining than the first act, but the extended "black out" set changes continued. Also, sometimes when they changed the set you could see what was going on backstage.

    So So Marvin Gaye Musical

by Fizza on 6/22/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

Good music performances, poor storylining. Leaves a lot to be desired but, maybe people will be satisfied with hearing the great Marvin Gaye songs with weak story

    The show was great!!

    by L. W. on 6/22/19The Modell Lyric - Baltimore

I remembered and sang every song except two. The cast could really sing. I even found out a few things about Mr. Gay I didn't know about his family and close friends. The costumes were great . Did they have black and white people dancing together back in the 60's and early 70's?

    Disappointed

by Pam on 6/22/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

We expected a fun, sort-of accurate version of Marin Gaye’s life filled with his wonderful music. Instead we got a few of his songs and a loud, screaming version of a Pentecostal music service (after his son shows up and after Tammy Terrell dies.) The actors had beautiful voices, but I wish we were able to hear them sing Motown instead of bad gospel. Chicago Theatre is beautiful, but the management is NOT good. We got there on time but then waited 45 minutes with hundreds of people to get inside the theater. The popcorn tasted OLD and the intermission took forever-twice as long as they said it would. Don’t bother.

    Very good show

by Edog on 6/22/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

The show started out a little slow but quickly picked up and was very well done. The story was told very well. The singers and dancers were extraordinary. I would definitely recommend this show.

    Impressive Entertainment

by Stephanie on 6/22/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

I had a wonderful experience at the Pride and Joy musical. The performance was outstanding, the singing was awesome and the 2 guys who played Marvin Gaye had his sexy mannerism to perfection. My husband and I enjoyed the show and we encourage anyone who has not seen it to get tickets and prepare for some great entertainment. I wish you much success on your travels from City to city. Still Proud

    by S. D. on 6/22/19The Chicago Theatre - Chicago

It was a professional production but lacked substance about Marvin’s life outside of his marriage. Would have loved to see more about his relationship with Tammy and have more build up towards his death. The opening nite glitches (technology/ sound, late start, etc) I guess are expected, but the actors did a good job keeping the show moving.
