First off...the singing was fantastic, especially the three leading men, and the woman portraying Tammi Terrell. I could sit there, close my eyes and it was like I was hearing the real Marvin & Tammi. What a talented group. The interpretive choreography from the ensemble was entertaining for the most part; but some dances just didn't seem to work well with the storyline - especially the cemetery scene. Now for the bad parts - the script was choppy, poorly written and difficult to follow. The last scene left us totally confused - was she supposed to be in heaven as well for their last dance? I was disappointed they failed to address Marvin's abusive father; in fact they didn't seem to address his father at all. And it was extremely disruptive watching several of the actors, including young Marvin Gaye continually adjusting their headsets, as their mikes kept shifting away from where they needed to be. As a result, it left a lot of the dialogue inaudible. Also, no programs or playbills were provided; you had to shell out more $$$ to buy an oversized program which gave you act/scene information as well as actor biographies...VERY disappointing. Overall for the price we paid for the tickets, the performance left us underwhelmed and wishing we had saved the $$$ and just bought a CD; but unfortunately they didn't offer that either.
