Premier Boxing Champions

Manager Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Champions series features top-level fights all around the country (and across the television landscape). Just look at the names in the PBC promotion. Champs and ex-champs and legit prospects abound: Deontay Wilder, Adonis Stevenson, David Benavidez, Jermall and Jermell Charlo, Jarrett Hurd, Errol Spence Jr., Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, Mikey Garcia, Leo Santa Cruz, Gary Russell Jr., Abner Mares, Brandon Figueroa, Danny Garcia, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Jarrett Hurd, and Gervonta Davis. Living relic Manny Pacquiao is on board. Surprise titlist Andy Ruiz Jr. is in the PBC camp, too.

Premier Boxing Champions History

The first PBC card was in 2015, and it was broadcast on NBC, with Keith Thurman as the headliner and Adrien Broner and Abner Mares on the undercard. There've been a lot of fireworks since then, heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder providing many of them. In 2016, Wilder knocked out Artur Szpilka in the ninth round with a cannon shot from his right hand. The following year, Wilder swarmed challenger Bermane Stiverne, knocking him down three times before the fight was stopped in the waning moments of the first round. Stiverne managed just two jabs and two power shots in all.

In 2018, Wilder took on Luiz Ortiz at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in one of the great bouts of the promotion's brief history. The cautious, pawing exchanges of the early rounds gave way in the fifth to a big right from Wilder that buckled Ortiz's knees and then a second right that sent him to the floor. Ortiz came back and nearly knocked out Wilder in the seventh. The champ rallied, and in the 10th he overwhelmed Ortiz, ending the fight with a huge right uppercut.

But the PBC is a lot more than Wilder. In September 2019, welterweight Errol Spence Jr., fresh off his domination of Mikey Garcia, bested Shawn Porter in a frenetic split decision, unifying the IBF and WBC belts and moving Spence closer to the top of the pound-for-pound rankings. And don't forget the old guy. In 2018, Pacquiao, on the cusp of turning 40, joined the promotion and soon recorded a pair of solid decisions, first against Adrien Broner and then against the dangerous Keith Thurman.

by Igzzz3 on 5/1/18Don Haskins Center - El PasoRating: 4 out of 5

The matchmakers did a great job of putting these bouts together. The Don Haskins Center did a great job of hosting these bouts. We need more PBC, HBO, Showtime, or ESPN boxing fights!

  • Boxing setup

by Jts817 on 5/1/18Don Haskins Center - El PasoRating: 1 out of 5

I bought my tickets according to the lay out on the computer screeen of the ring being set up. I bought my ticket to view the center of the ring from the center, when I arrived and got in my seat the ring was set up a full seating section over. Not satisfied especially for paying for the front row seats.

  • Seats not as advertised, boxing card was weak

by ROMVLVS on 5/1/18Don Haskins Center - El PasoRating: 1 out of 5

Seats were far to the right of advertised map of event. TV media coverage personnel interfered with view. Map was inaccurate compared with actual event set-up.

  • Ask for LOTS of information BEFORE ATTENDING

by CT7109 on 2/20/18Don Haskins Center - El PasoRating: 1 out of 5

    1. Even though 2 calls were made to the Don Haskins Center about RV parking, they were unable to help with where nearby RV parking for the is located. Finally called the El Paso Police Department and they gave us Lot 7 which is directly across from the Don Haskins Center would be the most appropriate spot. We travel with our RV because our elderly dogs need medications at a certain time. 2. Inside, when asking at the Information booth, there were no fight cards for the event. So you really did not have the necessary information needed during a live Boxing Event. We have attended a lot of live boxing, this is the only one we ever attended in El Paso. The lack of fight cards was disappointing. 3. There were a rotating group of less than 10 vendors (most of which did not understand my questions in English). all serving less than healthy food, you were not allowed to bring in any outside food and drink. At first I did not think this would be an issue, however because there was not enough information provided, the venue started at 4pm and ended at 10pm. That is 6 hours without food which is a problem. There were a few choices for diabetics, roasted peanut bags (I am allergic to peanuts) and hot dogs(without a bun). I have food out in the motor home however then I was told there is NO RE-ENTRY so if I left I would not be allowed to return. So I waited until my dogs needed meds and left with my wife staying inside. She sent me texts to let me know how the fights were going. I missed the two main events. 4. Seating Uncomfortable - Way too uncomfortable for a 6 hour event. 5. The side large Monitor Screens were on until the Main Events. Which really added to the problems of the night. There was no way to tell which round the fighters were in for the main events BECAUSE there were no one holding the cards marking the rounds (the fight round girls typically) nor was there a monitor showing you the round. So there was no way to know how many rounds and what round the fight was in. All in all very disappointing. Will not return unless I hear this center will care more about people's health and comfort by allowing re-entry if you have to leave or there is much better food choices...

  • Premier Boxing in El Paso

by Gatlinfanman on 2/20/18Don Haskins Center - El PasoRating: 5 out of 5

This was a well produced boxing lineup. The fights were close together as the next pair of fighters were walking in as the two that just finished were walking out. Not a bunch of dead time to waste between bouts. No bad seats either.

  • Great fights, strange delivery

by MikeCep on 2/20/18Don Haskins Center - El PasoRating: 4 out of 5

So exciting to watch world class fighters. All matchups were great, and in the 'major' fights skills were well matched, so I stand behind the majority draw decisions. Unfortunately, this also means that action was lacking. The last two fights were great with more action. Never been to a fight with no 'Round Princess', and the announcer never entered the ring. Fighter entries were great, but the introductions were terrible because there was no ring announcer on the mat. Anyway, great fighters and venue, but the delivery seemed very unprepared and I couldn't understand the rounds.

  • Great night of boxing at El Paso TX

by Tuzo on 2/20/18Don Haskins Center - El PasoRating: 4 out of 5

After a long wait we finally got a boxing event in El Paso TX. It was a great night, great matches and a wonderful participative cheering crowd. Unfortunately judges score cards did not reflect the reality and favored our local champ Jennifer Han even she was clearly dominated by her challenger. I am a fan of her but it was unfair for her Colombian opponent. Same happened with Victor Ortiz, he was clearly out boxed by Devon Alexander at least 9 of the 12 rounds. But that is boxing and I hope we get boxing events more often at El Paso.

Got tickets for myself and my dad for his birthday. Tickets were easy to buy and had them on my phone and they were easy to hold on too.

  • Unorganized

by VincentR on 7/18/17NYCB LIVE, Home of The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum - UniondaleRating: 2 out of 5

My ticket stated the event started at 6pm but the first fight not begin until approximately 7:15pm. I understand things happen but there was no announcement or notification sent via email/text. The main event concluded at approximately 10-10:20pm and as people were departing the coliseum the announcer stated that there were three more bouts remaining. Why would the organizers put the main event in the middle of the overall fight card? I departed the event without watching the remaining bouts.

  • Night of knockouts

It was very good. The fighting was interesting, Sadly, there were too many TKOs-- not that you can help that.
