After years of listening to Prairie Home Companion on the radio I was delighted to see their show in person. It is truly entertaining!
This event was at an outside venue, and Garrison Keillor was with the audience from before the event throughout the entire show, including the intermission and after. He graced us with his fascinating knowledge of our city and wove it into his stories throughout the show. He also invited other artists, local to Cincinnati or performing currently in Cincinnati to join him in the performance. We love to have him in the city!
Garrison Keillor activiely involves the audience throughout the night. During intermission, instead of going back stage to rest he led us in group singing of patriotic & religious songs. He walked thoughout the pavilion at Riverbend. I have listened to A Prairie Home Companion for years and thought I knew what to expect, but the evening surpassed my expectations. I am thankful that my husband and I decided to spend the evening at a live taping of the show!
Amazing night out. Would recommend it to everyone.
I have listened to Prairie Home Companion on the radio and was thrilled when I saw it was coming to Cincinnati. I mentioned it to a friend who I was not aware was also a listerner. I got the tickets, she drove and we had the most wonderful evening. It is a unique form of entertainment I hope will be around for a long long time. The creative story telling is an art everyone should experience. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the show.
Garrison Keillor is fantastic! What an entertainer. He is seemingly at ease but "on" all the time. Even during the intermisson. Don't miss it if you get a chance to go.
This show was excellent! Very entertaining! Amazing when you think that there is a show every week plus travel time.
Not only did all the radio voices come alive and in the flesh for me and my wife... (we have been listening for years) but Garrison gave us much more than just the show you hear over the radio... Even during break... he came out into the audiance (before the show as well) and kept entertaining us! And what a showman he is! What a lost art it is! Please bring him back next year.
This was the fourth time I've attended a live performance of PHC and it didn't let me down. I always love the way the writers include the locale of the show into the humor. And the sound effects were spectacular as usual!
If you go to see this at Riverbend in Cincinnati, don't get lawn seats. Sit under the pavillion because Garrison Keillor walked through the aisles singing and you couldn't see anything unless you were in there. Watching on the big screen on the lawn isn't the same. Also, the action wasn't as lively as I was expecting - probably because these guys perform for radio, not for watching audiences. Would see it again if had the chance, though.
i am a weekly fan of this NPR radio program. Seeing the characters live provided for an enjoyable evening entertainment.
We got 2+ hours of entertainment by Garrison Keilor, our poet laureate, and all the other people who make the show so much fun. There were many mentions of Cincinnati. Mr. Keilor had done his homework.
I have seen Prairie Home Companion 3 times in Cincy. This was by far the best. Garrison walked among the audience making it feel very personal. He has really hit his prime and the outside venue worked better than an inside venue. The only remark I have that is critical is that the traditional Cincinnati is well known and it would be refreshing for him to talk about the newer aspects of Cincinnati. We have the Freedom Museum, The Banks plans, finally, and great celebration on the Ohio River every Labor Day hosted by a frog among others. Let's talk about something else besides pigs, chili and German heritage. It's been done, we do have new life Garrison. Will somebody please let him know?
Our favorite radio program was much more fun than just listening! Having watched live will enhance my listening experience whenever I hear a performance in the future.
My wife and I had always wanted to see Garrison in person, having listened to him for many years on the radio. So as part of her birthday present this year we drove from north Alabama to see him live. We were not disappointed!
I had seen PHP live before, but never paid for the VIP tickets until now. They were well worth it! Being close to the stage allowed us to see the interaction between the players--esp. the sound effects man (who is worth the price of admission alone!). It was interesting getting to see how changes made in rehearsal played out on stage during the show.
Great show in a great space. Weather was cool and clear- always a good combination for a show at Riverbend. Line up for the Prairie Home show was more what we wanted to hear- lots of radio stories and little bit less music. The poetry references in one sketch blew right passed us until my husband looked them up on the internet and determined it was a very funny bit. Enjoyed Garrison coming out into the audience to sing and interact. Can't wait until he comes back to Cincinnati again- maybe he would like it better here than in Minn....
I listen to this show every week and I couldn't believe how awesome it was live in person. I would recommend it to anyone. A great family event as well.
My husband loves Prairie Home Companion, so I gave him these tickets for our 25th wedding anniversary. He loved it of course! Very relaxing enjoyable evening.
A beautiful relaxing night outside with good storytelling, Billy Collins poems, laughter and singing! It was great to be there after hearing it on the radio.
