About

POKEY LAFARGE IN CONCERT:

From his days as a nomadic busker to his current status as one of old-time music’s most respected guardians, roots revivalist Pokey LaFarge has remained a soulful and authentic live performer. LaFarge’s bluesy sound combines Americana, Western swing, Appalachian folk, and more, and his knowledge of and respect for these historic genres are on full display at his toe-tapping live shows. His swinging sets evoke the sounds of yesteryear with throwback instruments like kazoo, washboard, and lap steel guitar, treating fans to an unforgettable concert experience that’s the next best thing to a riverboat trip down the Mississippi.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Pokey LaFarge, aka Andrew Heissler, was born in Bloomington, IL, where he earned the nickname “Pokey” from his mother who would frequently implore him to hurry. He inherited both his love of American history and his penchant for fingerpicking instruments from his grandfathers, one of whom gave him his first banjo and guitar. After discovering the blues in his teens, he traded in his banjo for a mandolin and hitchhiked across the country to the West Coast. There, he released two solo albums as Pokey LaFarge in the late ‘00s before forming a band and releasing 2010’s Riverboat Soul. The album was a critical hit, earning an Independent Music Award for Best Americana Album and drawing the group out for extensive touring. Their next album, 2011’s Middle of Everywhere, won the same award the following year, cementing LaFarge’s place as one of Americana’s most promising young talents. Since then the group has toured with Jack White, released a 2013 self-titled album, and wowed ticket buyers with their period-perfect sound at major festivals around the world.

  • Pokey LaFun!

by Organic55 on 9/16/13Deluxe at Old National Centre - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Tremendously entertaining! Pokey must have been a swing/jazz band leader in the 1920s in a past life, cuz this cat can kick it! This band shows their chops on covers of traditional old-timey tunes performed with contemporary verve. And their original compositions capture the essence of the genre like no other band performing today. Don't miss the wonderful entertainment that is Pokey LaFarge!

  • Great but Late

Both music groups were great. We were very disappointed that the concert started an hour later than advertised.

This is the second time I've seen Pokey and his band...the musicianship of every member is astounding...EVERY. SINGLE.MEMBER. CAN. WAIL! I love music, I love live shows and I have to say this was the best show I've seen in over a year.

Read great reviews in "Mountain Express," while in Asheville, but missed their show there. Their show at Great Scott on the 20th was mesmerizing! The pleasure of hearing the perfect balance of authenticity & fresh arrangements with the charismatic Pokey LaFarge et al was everything I enjoy in a live show; the band is tight! Way beyond their years! Thank you for supporting such great talent!

  • Pokey rocked the house!

  • fun awesome and dance-worthy

Pokey and the band did not fail to delight. I will definitely be purchasing the new album. Their open, Mike Oberst of the Tillers, did a phenomenal solo set. Both shows were very intimate and great fun. Every one on stage is an amazing musician. Chloe Feoranzo, clarinet and sax, raised the bar for my future wife. She can wail. (And she's very easy on the eyes ;-). ) If you like american music (eg swing, blues, jazz, bluegrass) and an ole timey sound, you want to catch them live. Bring tour dance shoes because your feet will want to move even if you're too much of a stiff.

This was so much fun! The event was superb and the areas we were in of the Taft Theater were beautifully historic and had interesting architecture. This event was in the ballroom and it had a great ambiance! Would definitely do again!
