About

POKEY LAFARGE IN CONCERT:

From his days as a nomadic busker to his current status as one of old-time music’s most respected guardians, roots revivalist Pokey LaFarge has remained a soulful and authentic live performer. LaFarge’s bluesy sound combines Americana, Western swing, Appalachian folk, and more, and his knowledge of and respect for these historic genres are on full display at his toe-tapping live shows. His swinging sets evoke the sounds of yesteryear with throwback instruments like kazoo, washboard, and lap steel guitar, treating fans to an unforgettable concert experience that’s the next best thing to a riverboat trip down the Mississippi.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Pokey LaFarge, aka Andrew Heissler, was born in Bloomington, IL, where he earned the nickname “Pokey” from his mother who would frequently implore him to hurry. He inherited both his love of American history and his penchant for fingerpicking instruments from his grandfathers, one of whom gave him his first banjo and guitar. After discovering the blues in his teens, he traded in his banjo for a mandolin and hitchhiked across the country to the West Coast. There, he released two solo albums as Pokey LaFarge in the late ‘00s before forming a band and releasing 2010’s Riverboat Soul. The album was a critical hit, earning an Independent Music Award for Best Americana Album and drawing the group out for extensive touring. Their next album, 2011’s Middle of Everywhere, won the same award the following year, cementing LaFarge’s place as one of Americana’s most promising young talents. Since then the group has toured with Jack White, released a 2013 self-titled album, and wowed ticket buyers with their period-perfect sound at major festivals around the world.

  • Pumed up a small crowd.

by Nando on 3/3/23House of Blues San Diego - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Although the crowd was lite, the band pumped up the energy. More San diegans should get to know this mid-western boy. Cogratulations on your engagement to a San Diego girl!

  • Engaging

by Bzzrd on 3/3/23House of Blues San Diego - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Pokey did not disappoint. He and his ragtime music sextet played and sang both new and classic hits. The band truly looked to be enjoy themselves, in spite of a lackluster early-in-the-week turnout at the House of Blues-SD. Pokey himself was quite engaging with the crowd. I do think he would have pulled a bigger crowd at the Belly Up. He and his band will remain on my “to see” list for the foreseeable future.

  • Great performer.

by Brawny guy on 11/16/21Brighton Music Hall presented by Citizens - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Pokey Lafarge is a fantastic showman who really knows how to entertain his fans. He never stopped moving on the stage and it is obvious that he loves what he does. An excellent guitar player who was able to carry a one man show through to the end without missing a beat. Covid forced him to tour without a band and we really didn’t miss them with his intimate, crowd engaging music and dialogue. Can’t wait to see him again!

Wow what a show Pokey and the band were on fire right. The audience knew all the songs and sang along how could you not. Pokey even got us to whistle along. .if you have a chance to see Pokey take it.

  • High Energy Entertainment!!

by GuitPest on 5/12/18Teragram Ballroom - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Pokey LaFarge is a consummate performer, great music, lyrics, and backed by a fantastic group of musicians! This is quite literally one of the best shows I've been to, the entertainment level was fantastic, moved between songs at a nice pace, and kept a good rapport with his audience. Totally worth seeing multiple times! The opener Al Scorch was really fun to watch too, and his lyrics were really fantastic. I want to see him play again too!

  • Pokey LaFarge is a must-see live artist!

    by Mjdoherty101 on 1/2/17Delmar Hall - Saint LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Pokey LaFarge has it all as a performing artist - the charisma, the natural talent and his band! On December 30th Pokey and his band showcased all of this st their first Delmar Hall set. I'd like to point something out, and that is the technical difficulties which Pokey faced midway through his set. One of his guitars had an error with its pickups causing a great distortion within it's sound. At first I had thought this error was truly a guitar pedal, reminiscent of Jack White's distortion. Pokey overcame this obstacle and went on to play a fantastic concert! Why am I pointing this out? Because I've gone to over 200 concerts in my time and I would rather see someone experience a malfunction than play a flawless set. > THIS IS LIVE MUSIC! No pre-recorded samples/audio! Everyone up there is working together to unify a beautiful performance! Whether it's Joey Glynn and Adam Hoskins throwing solos back at eachother or Ryan Koenig shining bright with his harmonica or banjo solos... these guys are brilliant and work hard at achieving their sound! Do not miss a Pokey LaFarge show! They are unique and always special.

  • Pokey LaFarge, Boston

by kgnc on 4/6/16Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

What you hear isn't what you see... This isn't some "Americana" band, (folkie-urban). This is a St. Louis blast! Pokey does it all with aplomb. From jump blues to Mex-American... Don't miss this band, and a band it is. Great guitar work, great percussion, great bass back-up, great vocals. Plus, the Southside Three fills in the gaps with their own, too short, set.

  • Pokey LaFarge is anything but pokey - what a show!

by gbags on 4/5/16Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This is my 3rd time seeing Pokey LaFarge and the Southside 3, now + 2 more with the addition of a horn section. Gets your feet moving and there's no way you can't smile through the whole event. Very much recommend catching this group if they come to a town near you!

  • 110% from Pokey

    by shmeg8 on 4/5/16Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

you always get a high energy performance from Pokey. If you like that "old timey" music this band is for you! One of the best acts out there!

  • Awesome show, fun fun fun!

by RachelXS on 4/5/16Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This was the most fun I've had at a live show in a very very long time. I can't wait to see him live again, and the band was also amazing.

  • Pokey Pageant

    by Pokeyfan1 on 1/3/16The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

The show opened with the River Kittens, Hooten Hallers, the one and only Pokey LaFarge and a two hour set to take us full swing nto the new year

  • New Year's Eve and Pokey

by jojk on 1/3/16The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

The evening was great!! All three of the groups were fun and just a little different. (Would love to hear the River Kittens again some where). Pokey did a great job reminding the crowd of the other groups. He even went so far as to invite them on stage at the end and allowed the Sax player from the The Hooten Hollers to play along with his band. Bonus was when the Loot Rock Band came out at the end. :-) Pokey is such a great showman and has never disappointed at any venue where we have seen him.

  • by ThatOneChickfromSomething on 7/14/14Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

Pokey is amazing. Not a single flaw in the performance!

  • Pokey and the Band

by DrTutu on 7/13/14Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

Lots of fun/uplifting. However, please let the back row come forward more. They were great at improv, esp. Chloe and TJ, but could hardly see and hear her.
