Rusty and the group sounded great. He has a comfortable way of engaging the audience; like an old friend. They are all incredible musicians. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Brought back a lot of memories. Band sounded really good. Two opening acts were great, Chelsea Williams and Calico. Both have a country rock feel.
Been following this band forever! Did not disappoint! Love the new stuff too!
Poco was the second band following a mediocre Pure Prairie League. They played well enough but sounded very thin with only four members. They insisted on playing songs from Rusty Youngs new CD and that cut into songs they should have played. Come on Rusty, we know Poco is basically you with hired guns, but play your solo stuff at your local bar. Firefall, the third band was actually very good and made up for the first two.
I had a good seat; I loved the lighting effects, and the audience was courteous and all My age. The table set up after the concert was SUCH a Great idea!!! I got all of their autographs and was So nervous when POCO members spoke to me! The accordion player was delightful to watch and is an incredible mandolin player. Mr. Young played so many different instruments with such talent. I am so happy that I was able to see them.
I love seeing shows at the Birchmere. It's small enough that you feel part of the show and the music is great. Poco was no different. The music was a bit slow in the beginning, but quickly got more revved up. One disappointment was the entire show was 1 hour and twenty minutes long. It started at 7:40 and was done by 9..
Firefall was great. They played the music I wanted to hear and they sounded great. Poco was so-so. Musically they sounded good. I felt they spent too much time playing music from their new CD. The music from the new CD does not sound like the Poco I went to hear.
We love coming to the Birchmere to enjoy concerts. The venue has a long time connection to music from way back. The band PURE PRARIE LEAGUE was fun to watch. They took you back in time with AMY especially and a few others. Its a great match up with POCO. POCO was simply awesome. Besides going back in time, they have blown us away with their new CD, ALL FIRED UP. The emotion and talent that is demonstrated by it's band members is constant throughout their performance. Tears of joy were shed at the sounds from Rusty and his steal guitar, elation from Michael from his mastery of the keyboard, organ, mandolin and accordion. Wow! George and his always excellent sticks that carry on the beat. And Jack that shares his soul in his music with his voice and guitar. POCO has been reinvented and made to last. Keep going guys. I'm in for the ride anytime! Any time boys come on back to the birchmere!
I've seen it before, and I'll say this about these types of concerts: PPL never disappoints. They put on a fantastic. This lineup is still loaded with talent. Donnie Clark is a throwback to the glory days of the 70's southern /country rock days, he can play guitar with anyone. He also has some very strong lead vocals. Combine that with John David Call's still incredible steel licks and you are in for a major treat. Mike Reilly , another guy from the 70's still sounds as good as the old days and his enthusiasm and the band's generate a terrific atmosphere. The band really stretches things out musically, a very cohesive and rousing sound. The interplay of lead guitar and steel is extremely effective. Lead vocals and harmonies are on the money , a gifted band that has boundless energy. There is much to like about them. Their entire set was outstanding and the crowd agreed with numerous outbreaks of applause. These guys should have closed out the night. 4 stars for PPL. Heck, nobody is perfect.
The primary reason to go hear PPL is John David Call, the pedal steel player. Similarly the reason to see Poco is original member Rusty Young, a great guitar, pedal steel, and dobro player. Other than that, the rest of the players currently in these two bands are nothing special. I'd love to see Rusty Young with a really hot band, he deserves better than this current version of Poco. The tickets weren't pricey, so I didn't mind so much.
Pure Prairie League was good. Craig Fuller was not with them this time and I think that took away from the performance. They came with Firefall last time and they were "great". This time they were good. Poco was surprisingly good. Great entertainers that know how to put on a show. Michael is an amazing musician and definitely a great addition to the band. Would definitely see them again.
Pure Prairie League was fantastic; should have left after they performed, because I was thoroughly bored by Poco
In all fairness, this was an open-air venue, so accoustics might have made a difference. We have followed Poco's music for years and were anxious to have this chance to hear them live, but my husband, the guitar player in the family, came away very disappointed. He said they sounded old and tired. It was a cheap night out, so it was definitely NOT a waste of time.
Having seen each of these bands during their (respective) heyday , in the 70's, I wasn't too sure what each of them would be like today. Though each group had only one founding member left in the group, they both still sounded pretty much like their original bands. Poco was still a little more country than rock and Firefall was still more rock than country. I really missed Rusty Young's pedal steel playing since he was concentrating more on being the band's main guitar player. Firefall didn't lack guitar players and as always Jock Bartley played some incredibly tasty lead guitar (on most songs). Overall, I was glad to have seen these bands again over 30 years later.
Poco is my favorite group of all time. However, when they were introduced and came out onto the stage, I realized that not a single original member was there. These guys were unknown to me, and butchered some of the favorite songs that I had driven from Garland, TX to hear. Imagine driving 650 miles to see your favorite band (since this was the closest venue to home) only to find out that you're really not going to see the guys you've driven to see.
The Rodeo & concert were really good. Had a good time. I just felt bad that there were not that many people to enjoy it! I have never seen the Tingley Coliseum so empty! Overall great time!
This was a good rodeo in an almost empty venue. Frankly the State Fair would do better to make this a free event charging only for the box seats. I love rodeo and would like to see young folks learn about it. I do not know if ticket prices kept people away or what but stay away they did.
Can't beat the price of the tickets. I paid $35 to see three groups. With Cain park being on a smaller scale just about every seat was a good one. Although the sound was not the greatest . I believe it was the the house sound. Needs improvement there. Firefall was my favorite. Disappointed in Poco. They have a new CD out and did songs I never heard. I would have liked to hear more of the old stuff. Pure Praire League was fun. Ablast from the past. Brought back some great memories!!
Cain Park is a great location for concerts. A mini Blossom Music Center without any of the headaches. Wonderfull place to see a great show. Was excited to see 3 bands from the 70's. Firefall was superb. Poco was Good. I was very disappointed by Pure Prairie League. They sounded way to country for my taste. The lead signer had way too much of a country twang. The other twwo bands sounded like classic rock bands and Pure Prairie League just missed the mark with the heavy country sound. I loved their older music too which is a real bummer.
Bought tickets for this event because I needed something for my husband for his birthday. I knew he liked Pure Prairie League but I didn't really remember the other bands. Well, Poco and Firefall were a wonderful surprise. Outstanding musicians and very personable on stage. Enjoyed them immensely. I have to say that we were just a little disappointed in PPL. They sounded great. All band members are very talented. The band just did not have the connectedness (is that a word?) that the other 2 bands had. The members didn't seem to have a close relationship with each other. The only original member of the band (sorry, I've already forgotten his name) did the majority of the talking, and he came across very arrogant and cocky. Just not the same feeling you got from the other 2 bands. All in all though, it was a wonderful concert of almost 3 full hours of music. Great night!! My husband and I both enjoyed the evening.
