When I bought my ticket I expected Messina to be the headliner. I was shocked to see Jimmy come out and sit on a stool to start the show. He opened with a song he wrote about his wife, then sang L+M tunes. Later, Rusty Young joined the band to sing “Holiday Hotel” and a couple of other upbeat songs. Messina ended his set with “Your Mama don’t Dance” to a standing ovation. While his voice was weak at times, he was still able to sing on key and throughly entertain everyone who attended.
I thought the show was over after he was finished; after all Messina helped form Poco with Richie Furray, Randy Meisner and Rusty Young. A bunch of us started to exit. We were told the show wasn’t over. It didn’t matter that we were entertained for 90 minutes; Poco still had to perform. After a 15 minute break, Rusty Young came out to sing lead, He struggled big time to carry a tune. Even with the average voice singing to us, the group was not disastrous. Besides hearing the three hits that I remembered, there were a number of others that were done well. The best song came from the youngest member (he joined Poco 9 years earlier). He sang a Rock ‘n Roll song he wrote. I don’t remember the name but I liked it a lot.
After the show Messina and everyone else went to the front to sell CDs, take photos and sign autographs. I didn’t stop for this but I noticed how cordial Jimmy was. There was no Meet + Greet to get extra money. Any audience member had that opportunity.
I highly recommend this show. Who knows how many more opportunities we’ll have to see him. He was never one for touring. When he was producing Kenny Loggins, that’s all he wanted to do, Because he had written so many of Loggins songs, he was convinced to “Sit In” with Kenny and the rest is history.
