About

Teller and Todd Robbins invite Death out to play in PLAY DEAD, a new hilarious and spirit-shaking Off-Broadway show inspired by "Midnight Spook Shows," an American institution from the 1930s to the 1970s.  As the guide for the evening, Robbins draws audiences into an unknown haunted world full of frightful surprises and diabolical laughter.  Although very much a theatrical work, it is hardly a typical "play," but rather a fun, irresistible thriller - here and now in an "abandoned" theater, illuminated by a single ghostlight - in which audiences face their fears while being surrounded by ethereal sights, sounds and even touches of the returning dead - all achieved by wry, ingenious storytelling and uncanny, awe-inspiring stage illusions.  Time Out New York was right in saying that a night at PLAY DEAD is a "great date."

    Play Dead was incredible!

by Fifram on 10/25/10The Players Theatre - New York City

My husband and I enjoy all things spooky and are easily put off if it is not believable or interesting. This play keeps you interested 99% of the time, and whether you are hard to spook or easily jump out of your seat you'll enjoy this crazy, fun and inventive show!

    Fun show for Halloween time

by Hoboken8080 on 10/25/10The Players Theatre - New York City

For the price, this is a fun show to go to if you're on a date or just in the Village and looking for some spooky fun. Don't expect to be blown away by any phenomenal illusions, but if you're in the mood to have a good time, I recommend this show.

    fun

by byteart on 10/25/10The Players Theatre - New York City

My family (which consists of two teenagers) went Sat for the late night show. We sat third row, and although the seating was extremely cramped, it made for socializing with the people in front of us turn out to be a good thing. The illusions were superb. The experience of sitting in complete darkness was "chilling", my mind only going off to the bad places in my head, of rowdy kids but that was for a short time only. Needless to say I had to convince, no drag my kids to the show only to find them texting and facebooking all their friends about how much fun it was!

    Play Dead is creepy fun!

by MelanieNelson on 10/25/10The Players Theatre - New York City

This one-man play incorporates chills, magic, and darkness for a fun (if creepy) night out. Todd Robbins' delivery is spectacular and entertaining. He draws the audience in, plays with trust, then surprises you. It's a bit like having a scary campfire story come to life. This play incorporates a lot of darkness and audience participation (though not at the level of The Rocky Horror Picture Show; at least three people are selected from the audience to go on stage at one time or another). There are times the lights are completely out and you will feel things touching you. My group didn't mind this, but you should probably be aware. Nothing will stain your clothes or hurt you.

Play Dead was very entertaining as was the audienc

by JaguarGirl on 10/23/10The Players Theatre - New York City

We were enticed in to the theater of the macarbe from the start! The theme presentation didn't disappoint and was even enhanced by the performances; Todd Robbins and the audience participants. The theater was full and the audience responded to the scary darkness with shouts and cries from the "spiders" and things in the night." Play Dear was fun...
