Placido Domingo/YoYo Ma
by BadgerBob on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodOne of the best concerts I've ever been to. There are better conductors than Domingo, but he's Placido Domingo - he can do whatever he wants. Yo Yo Ma has no peer today. His playing of the Dvorak Cello Concerto was sublime and thrilling at the same time. Great stuff, even for music really better in a more intimate setting. I found myself watching the big TV screen because it was a bigger, better picture than my binoculars. Essentially it was like sitting outdoors and watching "Great Performances" on PBS But then I'd look back at the stage and realize what a privilege it is to be able to hear talent like this in person, no matter the venue. Tchaikovsky 5 was the second part of the concert after intermission. A very familiar "Chestnut", but perfect for a summer night concert. The orchestra sounded great, but the nitwits who clap between movements and whistle and shout sounded less great. Mid week Hollywood Bowl Sellout! Only downside was the crowd. Had to join 18,000 of my closest friends, but it was worth it.
