    Boring!!!

by loayzita on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Too much of the same...there was no variety....Placido Domingo never spoke with the audience, except to introduce himself at the beginning of the show...the best was Yo-Yo Ma...there should have been other guests...or Placido Domingo should have sung a couple of more songs.

    A Magical Evening

by Enchanting on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

A night to remember indeed! Two living legends in the world of classical music, Yo Yo Ma and Placido Domingo performing together at the Hollywood Bowl was a simply wonderful evening. Yo Yo Ma was, as always, the quintessential performer, a master passionate about his music and a sheer delight to watch. Mr. Domingo made his conducting debut with the LA Philharmonic and he too was exciting to behold. The music was heavenly and I loved every minute.

    Placido Domingo is impressive!

by Mikka on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I was very excited to witness Placido Domingo perform as a conductor. He is not only an impressive man because of his multi talents but because the love of his music and art reflect and is passed on without him saying a word!

    special talent special evening

by littleoldcritic on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

A standing ovation from the 18000 attendees is a dead giveaway that this 5-star event is not to be missed. The time flew by as we were treated to a couple of surprises by both PLACIDO DOMINGO and YOYO MA. Superb in every way. Bravo, BRAVO !!!!

    Nice Evening with the family

by MarioT on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

1st half was great. Yo-Yo Ma works wonders with the Cello. I would say Placido Domingo is to Opera singing as Yo-Yo Ma is to the Cello. Second Half, maybe it was just a little to big a bite for Placido. The end picked up.

Yo Yo Ma w/ Placido Domingo

by cetjet on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

You didn't have to be a classical music afficionada to know that this was one of the best events ever at the Hollywood Bowl. Yo Yo Ma's fantastic interpretation of Dvorak's Cello Concerto, along with his elfin grin had everyone quiet as church mice waiting for the next note or flurry of arpeggios. Then his unbelievable encores, the solo and the duet with Domingo, put the meringue on the pie!! Loved it.

One of the best Bowl Concerts ever!

by BJoan on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Yo-Yo Ma was perfect! His expression was pure joy as he "made love" with his cello, and the music was exquisite! He and the Philharmonic played as a perfect duet - like two solo instruments. Placido Domingo is to be congratulated on his debut as a conductor of the LA Phil. His interpretation of the Tchaikovsky was extremely sensitive and romantic. The audience went wild when he sang with Mr. Ma. This was a concert not to be missed! Bravo!

    Yo Yo Ma was exquisite

by dakinegirl on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I drove out from Palm Springs to partake in this magnificent event.17,373 others also attended and listened as intently as I did. I was rather surprised that an audience could be that quiet. Ma was soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Dvorák’s Cello Concerto, and Domingo stood on the podium. I may not have the capacity to articulate as well as others might but this was the most exquisite show I could have ever hoped to happen upon. A Tuesday night of classical music turned into a once in a lifetime experience for me. I was thrilled when Domingo sang Massenet’s “Elegy,” with Ma accompanying. The crowd was not expecting to have that little treat but were stunned to silence to hear. Ma and concertmaster Martin Chalifour magnificently seemed to egg each other on during a violin/cello duo in the Finale. I was sad to see it end. In my long drive home I was able to reflect on what I had just seen and the only word I can come up with is exquisite.

    YoYoMa & Placido Domingo

by LaChaCha on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Sublime! Yo Yo Ma's incredible playing made me want to weep and laugh because of the sheer beauty and joy of his musical expression--and his facial expressions. It was truly a soul-filling experience. One of his encores included Placido Domingo singing accompanied by Yo Yo Ma. I feel fortunate to have been there for this incredible performance.

Yo Yo Ma Stole the Show

    by Ryan2234 on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

In the first half, Yo Yo displayed classical 'superstar' stage persona and led the audience in a celebration of the capabilities of the cello. Placido sang for a few minutes. His singing was not on display, but his versatility and musical skill. Placido is a very good conductor, and the Symphony settled into a wonderful series in the last half. His reputation sold the show to the masses, who were surprised to hear so little of Domingo's voice.

    Less YoYo, more Placido.

by LucyTF on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The concert was enjoyable, however the title of the event was misleading. It wasn't until i was seated that I realized that Mr. Domingo would be conducting the orchestra and not singing with them. The music was lovely, but I was looking forward to hearing Mr. Domingo singing.

    Yo-Yo Ma was spellbinding!!

by TagnansGrandma on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The entire program was wonderful. The added surprises of Yo-Yo Ma doing an encore and Placido Domingo and Yo-Yo Ma singing and playing together was a wished for treat. We are buying tickets to the Philharmonic so we can see Yo-Yo Ma again.

    Yo Yo Ma is Amazing!

by amateurmuse on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

While it seemed to this amateur eye that conductor Domingo was not _always_ on the beat, the orchestra's partnership with Ma for Dvorak's Cello Concerto was unforgettable, particularly the first two movements. Slow and poignant, these movements received their best possible interpretation in Ma's hands. Passionate and precise, his playing almost silenced even the most oblivious bottle roller and paper bag rustler. I cannot give the same kudos to the HB staff however. They seemed strangely ill-equipped to handle a sold-out crowd (don't they do this for a living?!) One of the buses almost ran someone over due to poor direction and bad driving. Come on, guys, get with it!!!

Disappointed in the show, not the performance

by Saron on 8/26/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I had seen both Domingo and Yo-Yo Ma live before through individual performances in Lebanon. I was disappointed in the length of the show... Especially since parking was unavailable and I got to the bowl 20 minutes late. I saw 3 minutes of Domingo and 3 pieces from Yo-Yo Ma... The second half of the show was just orchestra.
