About

Pixel grip is resolute yet variable. The Chicago-based trio takes inspiration from the dimly-lit stages they dominate and the deepest realms of the human experience.

Over the last four years, the band has traversed the depths of the North American underground scene, selling out clubs and winning over fans with their indelible live performances.

The groups sophomore album ARENA was a 10 track exploring avant pop, EBM, and minimal wave [May 21, 2021] released via Feeltrip Records. The albums pounding dance rhythms were inspired by the groups shows supporting their 2019 debut Heavy Handed: being in an audience of freaks, queers, fetish people, all in the same room sweating together, and we all knew our purpose, and we were manic and arrogant, vocalist Rita Lukea says.

Lukea and bandmates Jonathan Freund and Tyler Ommen used crowded clubs as inspiration for refining ARENA during the pandemic that cut off safe socializing. The group conceived of nightlife as a respite from the titular arena, the combative conditions of everyday life. My head is also an arena, Lukea says. Swinging from mania to depression, struggling with my body image and eating disorders, addiction, anxiety, and gender confusion. When you are different, you dont have a seat at anyones table. The ARENA album is me saying fuck your table.

Pixel Grips songs confront wealth disparity, mental illness, and gun violence alike with over-stimulated confidence, audible in the relentless beats, Lukeas vocals, and the purrs of guest vocalist and trans icon MON?E on Demon Chaser. Dont play this album in your car unless youre ready to get into a car accident, Ommen jokes.

The palpable tension throughout the album culminates in the gentle release of closer Double Vision, written while Lukea was feeling sophisticated dressed in loafers and a silk shirt. If the bulk of ARENA takes place in the post-apocalyptic nightclub of your dreams, Double Vision is the sound of leaving the city and losing yourself in the blinding light of the desert - until night falls and you feel the urge to return to a dark club. ARENA is meant to be screamed along with at maximum volume, in anticipation of the day Pixel Grip can overpower a crowd full of freaks all over again.

Fog machines set off the smoke alarms- smoke alarms “fried” the PA system! They couldn’t get it back up and running! Rita with pixel grip came out and explained there would be No show tonight! Disappointed for sure but hoping they can re-schedule! Was 5 minutes before they were to come on stage! Sucked for sure!

  • Thisn Show Didn't Happen

Apparently the venue failed to notify Pixel Grips manager that thick fog would trip the fire alarm and the circuits couldn't be revived in time for a show. The band agreed to do a meet and greet in lieu of a performance and I'm sure this is going to be used as a justification against refunds. Not impressed!

  • Wish the show had happened

The venue said no limits on fog, which is irresponsible in a climate as dry as Denver. The fog won't stay on the floor in a low humidity environment. The fog filled the venue, setting off the fire alarm. The fire alarm shorted out the PA system, which the venue was unable to fix. The band was great: hanging out, chatting with everyone, signing things, taking pictures, sharing Malort. They made the best of a really bad situation.

  • Phenomenal

by It was phenomenal. Unforgettable on 1/2/25Outset - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Staff was awesome to start out. Great view anywhere standing. Sound was pretty good.

  • I didn’t like em

    by Babadouche 69 on 4/7/24Rating: 1 out of 5

Saw them live and just thought every song sounded the exact same. Pretty boring onstage with random empowerment rants. I can see why people like them, but just not for me.

No notes. This group always kills it. Worth seeing live every time they’re in town. 🖤⛓️🌹

Pixel Grip was great! The rooms sound was not. First 30 min the voval mic was too low, we could barely hear her. Place was too crowded the ticket max should have been lower

  • Was NOT disappointed AT ALL!

Pixel Grip brings a lot of energy to the stage. The lead singer brings this raw sexual power to her songs that you don’t hear in the music unless you see them live. I highly recommend seeing Pixel Grip! Worth every penny!
