Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and enters the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times in their 55 seasons.

    Malkin...Amazing!

    by reggie8979 on 7/13/09Mellon Arena - Pittsburgh

Pens win 7-4 in a game that saw 3 lead changes and an unforgettable perfomance by Evgeni Malkin. Malkin's Hat Trick was the individual performance of the evening. This was the best Penguins game that I have been lucky enough to attend.

    Way to start a sweep

by MalkinsManiax on 7/13/09Mellon Arena - Pittsburgh

Awesome hard nosed hockey in game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals. The hitting and the will to win by the Pittsburgh Penguins in this game really set the tone for a sweep. The goal tending was excellent on both sides and Phenom, Evgeni Malkin was just heating up in this game to dominate the entire series with a goal and an assist. Miroslav Satan and Phillipe Boucher also had clutch goals to prove their worth as the Pens edged the Canes in a hard fought 3-2 overtime victory to open the series. What a game!

    hockey at it's finest!

by busgirl on 7/12/09Mellon Arena - Pittsburgh

Got lucky...........called that am and was fortunate to get tix to game. Dead center ice. Never had such a great view of the game before. The place was rocking and so were the Pens. Took my daughters one who just turned 16 for her birthday and the other 18. The Pens organization is a class act. They know what their fans want too. The team sells out and they still give 'giveaway's" at the game. Nice touch! Koodo's to the Organization and to the Penguins.....On edge of seat whole game. Most exciting sport to see in person . Can't wait to go again. Great game, great fans............

    Saw history in the "Malkin"

by BurghDutchess on 7/12/09Mellon Arena - Pittsburgh

This was the first Stanley Cup playoff game me and my husband had ever been to, and we weren't disappointed. If you're a Penguin fan and have never been to a playoff game, save your money and go. During a regular season game, it's exciting to watch your team win, but it's amplified during a playoff game. Everyone is on the edge of their seat and everytime your home team gets a goal, you're hugging strangers and high fiving people two rows down from you. It's just crazy excitement. This particular game was pure domination of the "Cardiac Canes". They didn't have a chance from game one and this magnified it. But what I'll always remember is Malkin. He was just playing like a madman. Everytime he was out on the ice, he caught your eye because he was always up to something. Then that wrap around goal was sick. It felt like the roof was going to blow off the Igloo. The most memorable Penguin game been to so far.

    Pens Hurricanes _ Unbelievable

by bapeljagr on 7/12/09Mellon Arena - Pittsburgh

Malkin's Hat Trick was amazing. Cam Ward lost his liquor license on the backhand. Not sure how Geno did it.

Nice that the Pens offer tickets to the common fan and don't sell all their tickets to season ticket holders!

    Go Pens

by EricR on 7/12/09Mellon Arena - Pittsburgh

This was my first Penguin game in years, and first ever playoff game. After attending the amazing AFC Conference Championship at Heinz Field, I can say that this playoff atmosphere is comparable. The crowd was incredible. The standing room tickets gave us a great view--I might even PREFER standing to sitting. We could get to the concession stand and restrooms quickly, and it made celebrating goals easy--we could run around the concourse and slap hands with all the other peanut-gallery standees. That said, it wasn't really peanut gallery. The view of the ice was excellent, and hanging tvs made up for the fact that the center scoreboard was obstructed

by smkibflo on 7/12/09Mellon Arena - Pittsburgh

you could feel the electricity in the air as you entered the arena. it was a terrific back and forth game until the pens broke it open thanks to the play of playoff MVP Geno Malkin. hat's off to the canes for trying, but, the pens would not let the canes get the upperhand. geno was playing like a man possessed. that game showed the world what would be coming in the finals.
