About

Phish in Concert

Probably no other band around today is more about the live experience than Phish. As the undisputed kings of the jam-band movement that began in the '80s and exploded in the '90s with bands like Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler, and The Spin Doctors, they defined a style that was song-based but also about improvisation and the magic of the moment. When they brought their creative collision of rock, jazz, funk, folk, and country influences to a quickly expanding grassroots fan base in the '80s, a movement was born -- one in which the music was constantly developing before the audience's eyes and ears. Trey Anastasio's guitar, Page McConnell's keyboards, Mike Gordon's bass, and Jon Fishman's drums engage in a four-part conversation that's constantly evolving. Whether the band is playing tunes off classic Phish releases like 'Billy Breathes' and 'The Story of the Ghost,' or performing one of their famous Halloween shows where they cover another artist's album in its entirety, like The Who's 'Quadrophenia' or Talking Heads' 'Remain in Light,' Phish is always in flux. While headlining festivals like Bonnaroo, or hosting their own, like The Clifford Ball and Magnaball, or keeping an event all to themselves, the band maintains an unbreakable connection with their huge, hardcore audience of Phish Heads.

Phish Background

Phish got its start at The University of Vermont in 1983, when guitarists Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth, bass man Mike Gordon, and drummer Jon Fishman started jamming informally. But by the mid '80s, when Holdsworth had departed and keyboardist Page McConnell arrived to solidify the band's lineup, the band was truly beginning to define its sound -- a mix of Grateful Dead-inspired psychedelic jamming, jazzy fluidity, and funk-savvy grooves. Phish released its first, self-titled album in 1986, but like the Dead, they were always more about the live experience than the recording studio. And by the end of the '80s they were hitting the road hard, building up a hefty, dedicated audience and pretty much creating the jam-band circuit in the process. Their songwriting shone on albums like 'A Picture of Nectar,' 'Billy Breathes,' and 'The Story of a Ghost,' while their concerts became a nexus for thousands of hardy Phish Heads. You can't keep Phish out of water for long, and these days they continue to take their idiosyncratic but infectious sound to the people, creating new generations of Phish fans along the way.

    BlowItOut

by BlowItOut on 8/18/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

Why did they play only one song, the Sloth, for the entire show? That seems pretty odd.

An Off Night In Between 2 Monsters !

by TakeMyBikeOut on 8/18/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

The first set was fun until things got Elastic. The second set had potential with the opening Tweez but that was short lived and then from the peak of Taste to the opening notes of Oh Sweet Nothin ! it was a yawner...... Luckily the 1-2-3-4 punch close to show left everyone in a lot better mode - celebrating - still not looking forward to the drive to SPAC. Luckily it was worth every miles and then some. Merriweather- -just barely.

    Not the best Phish

    by Dankay82 on 8/17/09TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

This show was kinda meh... There was a good deal of slow songs. While I want to give them a chance to play new songs, I like to go to shows to rock out. I can listen to slow mellow songs at home.

    Phish at Toyota Park

    by Krash630 on 8/17/09TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

Not a bad show. You could tell they were a little rusty after five years off, but they stuck many a landing and had some amazing jams.

    amazing show

by phishmaniac on 8/17/09TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

phish through down an amazing show that was unforgettable. Toyota Park was a great venue that made for an excellent environment for phish. Phish played many of there great old songs such as: A curtain with, wilson, gotta jibboo, 2001, squirming coil that were nothing short of tremendous. They also jammed out with some of their new songs from their new album like time turns elastic and windy city. Overall the show was great, i wish they could have played longer but what else can you expect for a tuesday night.

    Phish Merri Merri Merri Time!

by R2L2 on 8/17/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

The Merriweather was how do I say explosive and weird at the same time! They were tight, powerful, and very very random. Variety is the flavor of life and I tasted it at the Merriweather!! Awesome vibe Awesome Show. Thanks.

    Phish @ M'weather

by HHood on 8/17/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

Really enjoyed the Phish show at Merriweather Post -- only one I'll get to see on this reunion tour. Banded sounded great. Song selection seemed a bit average, but there were some choice tunes -- Tweezer, Harry Hood, etc. Police presence was a bit over-bearing. Hopefully the band will continue to tour.

Not the best setlist, but the band was great

by internationalerb on 8/17/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

Never seen so many people at Merriweather! We had to park over a mile away! Anyway, show was good and extremely sold out. I wasn't a big fan of the setlist. I looked up other recent shows that had a lot more tunes from Rift, Billy Breathes and lots of Gamehinge songs that we didn't get. I just chalk it up as unlucky.

by TheSloth on 8/16/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

Great bustouts. "Party Time"?!?!?! Are you kidding me?!?!?! Esther and Foam were fantastic. The whole first set was incredible. Merriweather is an awesome venue (if you're in the pavilion, the lawn has terrible sightlines). I had so much fun I was limping the next morning!

    Phish Chicago

    by pinkpaula2626 on 8/16/09TOYOTA PARK - Bridgeview

The first set was ok, not the best we have seen from them. The second set they played some older stuff like Wilson, Harry Hood, Jabboo. They also played Heavy Things, Theme from the Bottom, 2001, and they closed with one of our favorites Loving Cup. They played a couple of new songs. The first one was not that great but the new Page sone The Windy City (maybe, not sure of the title) was ok.
