About

Phish in Concert

Probably no other band around today is more about the live experience than Phish. As the undisputed kings of the jam-band movement that began in the '80s and exploded in the '90s with bands like Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler, and The Spin Doctors, they defined a style that was song-based but also about improvisation and the magic of the moment. When they brought their creative collision of rock, jazz, funk, folk, and country influences to a quickly expanding grassroots fan base in the '80s, a movement was born -- one in which the music was constantly developing before the audience's eyes and ears. Trey Anastasio's guitar, Page McConnell's keyboards, Mike Gordon's bass, and Jon Fishman's drums engage in a four-part conversation that's constantly evolving. Whether the band is playing tunes off classic Phish releases like 'Billy Breathes' and 'The Story of the Ghost,' or performing one of their famous Halloween shows where they cover another artist's album in its entirety, like The Who's 'Quadrophenia' or Talking Heads' 'Remain in Light,' Phish is always in flux. While headlining festivals like Bonnaroo, or hosting their own, like The Clifford Ball and Magnaball, or keeping an event all to themselves, the band maintains an unbreakable connection with their huge, hardcore audience of Phish Heads.

Phish Background

Phish got its start at The University of Vermont in 1983, when guitarists Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth, bass man Mike Gordon, and drummer Jon Fishman started jamming informally. But by the mid '80s, when Holdsworth had departed and keyboardist Page McConnell arrived to solidify the band's lineup, the band was truly beginning to define its sound -- a mix of Grateful Dead-inspired psychedelic jamming, jazzy fluidity, and funk-savvy grooves. Phish released its first, self-titled album in 1986, but like the Dead, they were always more about the live experience than the recording studio. And by the end of the '80s they were hitting the road hard, building up a hefty, dedicated audience and pretty much creating the jam-band circuit in the process. Their songwriting shone on albums like 'A Picture of Nectar,' 'Billy Breathes,' and 'The Story of a Ghost,' while their concerts became a nexus for thousands of hardy Phish Heads. You can't keep Phish out of water for long, and these days they continue to take their idiosyncratic but infectious sound to the people, creating new generations of Phish fans along the way.

Probably the best concert experience ever

by Corey C on 4/24/24Sphere - Las Vegas

The sound quality was as if I was sitting in a huge arena wearing really high end headphones. Visuals were stunning. The bass I could feel through the seat was a Nice touch without being distracting.

by Godzilla on 4/24/24Sphere - Las Vegas

It’s not easy to describe what a different experience it is to see a musical performance at the sphere versus a normal venue - The addition of having the screen behind the band brings the performance to a whole new level Quite Unbelievable! - In terms of sound, I’ve never heard a better sounding concert- The audio was absolutely fantastic!!! I can hardly wait to go back to see Dead and Company when they perform

    Phish at Sphere was magical.

by JD on 4/24/24Sphere - Las Vegas

10/10 Phish at Sphere April 18-21 was incredible. This venue blew us away song after song. I know it’s hard to even imagine sitting down while your favorite band is raging but try it. The seats are haptic and when the bass drops the rumble seats deliver. This was an amazing experience to share with my friends and a weekend I will never forget. Thank you Phish and the entire crew that worked hard to put on these 4 shows together.

Immersive, Powerful - A New Era in Concerts

by SeanY on 4/24/24Sphere - Las Vegas

I streamed the first two nights of Phish @ Sphere in 'couch tour' mode at home. Both nights were incredibly captured and the sound was so dialed in the second night - I think it is the best Live Phish streaming audio I have heard of a show. I have seen & heard 'a lot' of Phish webcasts. I then flew in to Vegas early Saturday to attend the last two nights. There are few words to explain the actual Sphere experience in person to someone who didn't attend. Let me put it this way. New Year's Eve 2023 at MSG brought me resolution and complete fulfillment of 28+ years seeing this band when they played a full 'Gamehendge'. That show and Big Cypress stand atop the 293 shows I have attended - far and away. The Saturday and Sunday Sphere shows were 'almost' that fulfilling (certainly top 10 favorites). It is a new era in concert attendance. The MSG crew has outdone itself with its investment in this project. I hope to return every time Phish is invited to do future Sphere residencies.

    Sphere Phishing

by Jokihn on 4/24/24Sphere - Las Vegas

4 nights at the Sphere. Wow! Amazing shows. The sound was a unique experience surrounded with a base thumping seat. You got to hear isolated instruments drums, base, piano, and guitar sounds swirling around the arena, at the same time keeping in beat with your seat. Thumps and vibration felt throughout your body while the music touched your soul. It’s something to experience. The visuals were unreal. An amazing bunch of graphics designed and performed to the improvised music of Phish. The band and their team of technicians were in sync and it made for a Fantastic Voyage into a self contained ball of energetic sight, sound, and rhythmic energy. Everything live music should be, but more. Description and pictures don’t do it justice. It really is an event that needs to be experienced.

Drew Cary said it best, but I will add that if you ever have a chance to see Phish at the Sphere, you will never want to see another show again without. You are now spoiled and will want to come back!!

Really just an amazing place. Phish is my favorite band and having seen them countless times, and the Sphere experience just really brought everything to the next level. Amazing audio, loved the haptic seats in the upper levels, and of course the visuals are just out of this world.

    Unbelievable

    by Harry_Hood on 4/24/24Sphere - Las Vegas

Phish delivered big time. Talk about maximizing the capabilities of The Sphere technology! Visuals were fantastic but to me it was the sound system. Along with a killer night 4 setlist, the directional sound channels for each individual band member were incredible. From the crisp snap of Fishman’s snare drum to the rhythmic rumble from Gordo’s bass the sound was perfect! It was if you were standing right next to them. Can’t wait to see Phish @ Sphere part deux.

Amazing sound, Amazing visuals, Amazing show, Amazing Space. You could literally pick the instrument you wanted to hear and it was crystal clear to pick up on. The Sound is what truly blew my mind. The visual show with Phish is and has always been spectacular, but with the new tech, they really went all in a created a new type of show experience of which others will build upon and copy. The Dead and Company should be a great show too.

by Parksdbra on 4/24/24Sphere - Las Vegas

Our sound in the 110s each night wasn’t good. The whole experience graphics and lights were amazing. But the sound quality was terrible. Still had a great time! Would highly recommend. Just don’t sit in that section.

    Sphere is a magical place

by Lazlo on 4/24/24Sphere - Las Vegas

Words cannot describe what a game changer the sphere is for the live music experience. The sound is phenomenally amazing, even when you’re so far right of center that you can touch the led wall the sound sounds like the speakers are absolutely tuned perfectly to your seat. Yeah the screen is cooling and amazing, but the sound system and it’s nearly 170,00 speaker array are the true stars of the venue.
