Philadelphia Flyers History

The Flyers, who joined the NHL in 1967 when the league expanded from the Original Six, became a dominant force in the 1970s, earning the nickname "The Broad Street Bullies" for their physical style of play. Starting with the 1972-1973 season, the Flyers amassed 18 consecutive Playoff appearances, propelled by the likes of three-time MVP Bobby Clarke, Reggie Leach, and left winger Bill Barber.

The team won back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships, defeating the Boston Bruins in six games in 1974 and the Buffalo Sabres in six games in 1975. A bid for a third consecutive Cup fell short when the Flyers were swept in the finals by the Montreal Canadiens. In the 13 seasons that followed, the Flyers led the league in points twice and reached the finals three more times. During the 1979-1980 season, they set a record by going 35 consecutive games without a loss.

Sparked by forwards Tim Kerr and Brian Propp, the Flyers returned to the finals in 1985 and 1987, but were denied the title each time by the Edmonton Oilers. Behind the "Legion of Doom" line of center Eric Lindros, left winger John LeClair, and right winger Mikael Renberg, the Flyers made their seventh Stanley Cup Finals appearance in team history.

The Flyers continued to be a force well into the next decade, never missing the Playoffs. They had one more shot at a Stanley Cup Championship in 2009-2010, coming back from down 3-0 in the conference semifinals to beat Boston en route to a finals berth against Chicago. The Blackhawks prevailed in six games. To date, the Flyers have made it to the Playoffs a total of 40 times.

It was great to see the Flyers in South Jersey, however, expected it to last longer than 30 minutes!

Very disappointing! The practice was barely half an hour long! That is something that should have been mentioned. I was expecting to see a full practice. It seemed like it was a gimmic just to get parking money and visitors down to the city.

I read nothing that said the practice would be just 45 minutes. I was seated at 12:30. The practice was over at 12:55. Are you joking? Could the players break a good sweat in 30 minutes? The real shame was all the people still arriving at 1:00 thinking they were a little late. I saw many disappointed Flyers fans young and old.

  • Flyers open practice

by Anonymous on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 1 out of 5

Took me an 1 1/2 hours to get there, an they only spend 30 minutes on ice? what a joke waste of time - now I know why the tickets were free

Was very disappointed that it didn't last that long .... I drove a hour to get their for this event .

  • Practice so Short!!

by SandInToes on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 2 out of 5

The Flyers came out and practiced for 20 minutes... no wonder they lose so many games!! The accoustics in the Boardwalk Hall are so bad that we could hardly understand a word that Coatsie said. Something needs to be done about that. Overall, our group was disappointed.

  • Hour drive pay for parking 25 mins of practice

by Batmanbobby on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 1 out of 5

We drove down to AC to see a practice, not 2 drills and a shoutout, it lasted 25 mins, and there was not much interaction with the fans after, a team picture and a shoot around for those players that wanted to stay on the ice.

  • What a sham!

by DisappointedFlyersFan on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 2 out of 5

I looked forward to this moment.. the first time my son was going to see hockey and in Atlantic City, no less. Tickets said event starts at 12:30pm, so we arrived around 12:15pm to settle in. We were confused why the event had already started and by 12:40, the team was taking on-ice pictures and the practice was pronounced to be over? We traveled more than an hour away and saw almost nothing, very disappointed and confused... if anything events are usually delayed, not early, toss it up to lesson learned. The other problem we had is that we had tickets that said GA, Row 1, what a joke that was, no one even checked our tickets or had us sit where we thought we would, if it's GA, say first come first serve and inform people there are steps and to come prepared, especially when the venue may be new to someone.

It was fun to go and watch the Flyers practice but I thought they would have practiced longer than 30 min.

  • flyers open practice

by mbmad on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 2 out of 5

practice was okay, but disappointing as it was only 1 hours. could have made ti interesting if they did a small scrimmage game to get the fans excite.

  • Philadelphia Flyers Open Practice

by nuckenfutz on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 4 out of 5

Fun seeing the team up close and they spent a lot of time interacting with young fans, practice was very short, but close by and still a lot better than traveling. The venue is perfect to watch hockey or any other event, plenty of near by restaurants. the only down side is the expensive casino parking.

  • a waste of time

by Anonymous on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 1 out of 5

I realize this was a free event, however, we wasted gas and time to drive 35 minutes to watch 30 minutes of the players just shooting into the net. Our son had gone to a practice in 2013 at the Wells Fargo Center and raved about how great it was. We thought it would be a little more entertaining. Never again will I waste my time.

  • by Sportsfananics on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 1 out of 5

It was boring! And way to short! I think they gave 20 mins for practice!

  • Flyers Fantastic

by muangel on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 4 out of 5

This was a great free event to bring your kids! It was fun and the kids got to see major players without spending a small fotune

  • Was not long enough

    by AnnaMaria17 on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 2 out of 5

It took me longer to drive, park, and walk to event than the actual event. It needed to be longer.
