Philadelphia Flyers History

The Flyers, who joined the NHL in 1967 when the league expanded from the Original Six, became a dominant force in the 1970s, earning the nickname "The Broad Street Bullies" for their physical style of play. Starting with the 1972-1973 season, the Flyers amassed 18 consecutive Playoff appearances, propelled by the likes of three-time MVP Bobby Clarke, Reggie Leach, and left winger Bill Barber.

The team won back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships, defeating the Boston Bruins in six games in 1974 and the Buffalo Sabres in six games in 1975. A bid for a third consecutive Cup fell short when the Flyers were swept in the finals by the Montreal Canadiens. In the 13 seasons that followed, the Flyers led the league in points twice and reached the finals three more times. During the 1979-1980 season, they set a record by going 35 consecutive games without a loss.

Sparked by forwards Tim Kerr and Brian Propp, the Flyers returned to the finals in 1985 and 1987, but were denied the title each time by the Edmonton Oilers. Behind the "Legion of Doom" line of center Eric Lindros, left winger John LeClair, and right winger Mikael Renberg, the Flyers made their seventh Stanley Cup Finals appearance in team history.

The Flyers continued to be a force well into the next decade, never missing the Playoffs. They had one more shot at a Stanley Cup Championship in 2009-2010, coming back from down 3-0 in the conference semifinals to beat Boston en route to a finals berth against Chicago. The Blackhawks prevailed in six games. To date, the Flyers have made it to the Playoffs a total of 40 times.

it was cool seeing them practice. they did an awesome job.

  • What practice?

by Anonymous on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 3 out of 5

What practice? I was running a little late. When I got to the arena @1:00 every one was leaving. Did not see a thing. I did notice any listing on ticket print out about what times the doors would open.

  • Not worth the time

    by NikkiQ73 on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 1 out of 5

I was highly disappointed with the Flyers Open Practice. The event was supposed to start at 12:30 and started early (about 12:20). It was over at 12:45. I would have expected some games, interaction, or something additional for the children to do. By the time I drove 50 minutes to get there and paid for parking, it was hardly worth my time. My children were very disappointed!

  • Disappointing

    by Goober54 on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 3 out of 5

There was reserved seating for VIP's and the fans could not sit near the ice. Practice was for only 45 minutes. My travel time was longer than their practice.

  • Fab Flyer Practice

by JanFlyerFan on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

Great fun to see an open practice. Loved the opening with Mara Justine. The Flyers should hire her to sing God Bless America for every game. She had the whole audience in tears. Beautiful. The practice was excellent, and i enjoyed having the announcer tell us what the players were doing throughout the practice. I do wish they would have had their names on their jerseys. That is my only criticism plus they ran out of hot dogs very fast and there was a contest associated with buying a hot dog. It was a fun and different event, and I am thankful for the opportunity to go especially since it was free!! Thank you!!!

  • Flyers open practice was a waste

    by Case4 on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 1 out of 5

It was very convenient that the tickets were free giving people a chance to see their favorite Flyers, however, 30 minutes of practice was a total joke. No one practices for that short period of a time. Time, travel, gas, tolls and paying for parking is absolutely ridiculous to only experience 30 minutes of "practice." If an event like this is to be scheduled again I think more things should be put into consideration. For starters, it being longer than 30 minutes. I have spoken with MANY others who were also dissatisfied with this event. Also, with only the short time the VIP sections should have been open to EVERYONE.

  • Flyers open practice waste of time

by Joshno on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 1 out of 5

The whole event was 15 min and you needed to pay for parking and was just a trap to get you into atlantic city

  • Would have been great!

by FlyerzzGurl on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 4 out of 5

Actually it WAS great because we got there a 1/2 hour early and saw the whole thing. However, the event was supposed to start at 12:30 and actually started at 12:00. That was great for us, but for the majority of the fans who showed up at 12;30 and only saw 15 minutes of practice, it was a huge disappointment. For those of us who showed up early, we lucked out and had a terrific time!

Practice was great ! Well worth the stay over at golden nugget. Watched the flyers practice and the Eagles game all at Americas Favorite Playground

  • Flyers Open Practice was a ripoff and it was FREE!

by sqooz on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 1 out of 5

My kids were so looking forward to this event. With 4 young children my husband and I were equally excited to go to a FREE event with all the children. Because my son is with the mitey mites hockey team in AC, he was able to get reserved seats right by the bench. We arrived at 12:15p--Flyers were scheduled to take the ice at 12:30p. We immediately took our seats and 5 minutes later I got up to get hot dogs for the kids. I was very surprised that there was only ONE hot dog left at the vendor--ONE SINGLE HOT DOG. She said they were going to be closing soon and weren't putting out anymore. I thought this was strange and attributed this to the hot dog sweepstakes for a pair of free game tix. I then had to go to two different vendors to get food. When I got back to my seat with a box full of food for the kids, I sat down and the practice was OVER! The last of the players literally were leaving the ice when i sat down with the food! The "practice" couldn't have lasted more than 1/2 hour. EVERYONE was angry--many people drove all the way down from Philly and they were STILL letting people into the building who had tickets. If this is the way AC wants to drum up business they have gotten it all wrong. All it's done is make visitors angry for wasting their gas money to get here.

  • Flyers players are a class act

    by Longtimefan999 on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 4 out of 5

Despite it being a fairly short event, our family loved seeing our favorite team take the ice so close to home. I hope that the Philadelphia Flyers organization will offer more events in the future since Boardwalk Hall is such a fantastic arena. The kids really loved watching the drills and enjoyed Coatsey's explanations. The players also seemed to enjoy it as well, with a few, Giroux and Simmonds in particular, showing off some of their fancy stick handling moves in the shootout drill. After the practice was over, the players, upon exiting the ice, gave autographs and more to those lucky enough to be close to the tunnel area. Many of the players gave their sticks away to young fans, which just goes to show how much the players value and appreciate their loyal fans. I've been a fan for over 40 years and have always been impressed with the team's professionalism, dedication, and passion for the fastest-paced, most exciting sport!!!

  • Free…But way too short!!!

by HeatherNW on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 2 out of 5

I understand it was a free event, But it took longer to get from parking lot to seats than they actually practiced. 20 minutes on ice...

  • by Anonymous on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 1 out of 5

the problem was that the event started earlier than advertised and was way too short. everyone was talking about how it ended so soon and was not as interactive as they anticipated. granted it was a a free event however, a lot people planned their whole day around it and were left feeling ripped off. everyone was like "that was it?????" we came to the event a little late (after paying for parking) and it was already over so i didn't even see any of it. people were walking out going "don't bother!!! they;re done already!!"

  • Great Time

by flowar on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

This was a great time to watch and get the players to sign items.

  • Wrong ticket times

    by jflynn253 on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 4 out of 5

Overall the event was a blast. Enjoyed watching it with my girls HOWEVER.... My tickets were printed for a start time of 12:30. We showed up at 12:35 and watched 25 mins of the practice only to see the players leave the ice at 1:00. No announcement was made that practice was over but people advised us that practice was over and it had actually started at 12:00. After talking to other people they had advised us that the tickets were printed wrong and that the Flyers website had the correct time. Therefore we missed most of the practice. We drove 1hr and 15mins to watch 25 mins of practice.

  • by Anonymous on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 1 out of 5

It started before the time on the tickets & was a waste of time. Will never go again. Thank you for the disappointment.

  • Flyers Open Practice

    by shell78 on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 3 out of 5

I was excited to take the kids to the open practice. I know the doors opened at 11:30 and the practice started at 12:30. What I didn't know was how short that the practice was going to be. We drove from below philadelphia to get there. Not a far trip but not worth the time that we actually got to spend at the practice. Next time I would just get there at the very beginning.

  • Eh...

    by ace0629 on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 1 out of 5

Completely not worth the price - and it was free! They were only on the ice for about 20 minutes, it probably took these guys longer to get in their gear then the amount of time they spent on the ice. I know it was just a open practice, but to call it an event was rediculous!

  • Flyers Practice

by Anonymous on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 2 out of 5

We traveled one hour to be dissapointed by a half hour skate around. Will never do it again. The only good thing was the tickets were free.

  • Awesome!

by MaryDorman on 11/12/14Boardwalk Hall - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

We made it a date with friends to meet up in AC and watch the Flyers practice. We love the Flyers and the beautiful day made it a perfect pair. After practice, we walked the Boardwalk, played the slots and had dinner at Angelo's. What an awesome day!
