Shouldn't Have Been "Phil & Friends"

by Anonymous on 11/14/13Tower Theatre - Upper Darby

This was really a glorified garage band. While there is true merit in the band (these kids could evolve into something extraordinary), they are not ready for this grand of a stage, especially under the weight of expectation that comes with the "Phil & Friends" name. Ticket prices, billing, and venue all imply a certain level of performance, which simply wasn't met. Only half the show was Grateful Dead songs, which is what I expected to hear from a band called "Phil Lesh & Friends". The covers all seemed to be chosen for the memorable guitar hooks that kids gravitate to as they learn to play guitar. If this show had been billed "Lesh Family Band" or something similar, and been at a much smaller venue, it would have been outstanding.

    Monster of a Show

by ChuckM44 on 7/29/13Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

This show was just completely off the hook. The song selection was fantastic & the interplay between musicians superb. Had a great spot in the balcony where I was able to get GREAT pictures. The sound was incredible. Phil out did himself with this lineup. I would definitely put this up there with my favorite Phil & Friends shows.

Phil at the Peak of his game!!!

by bluterrapin on 7/27/13Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

This show was great from the first note to the last. Phils newest ensemble has incredible energy and talent. Don't let the gray hair fool you with this group. I just came off 5 shows with Furthur, and Phil and friends literally blew them away!!!

    Extensive Jams

by Biceptual on 7/27/13Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

Nice country. Small hall, about the size of old basketball court. Great sound. Extensive jamming. Best Grateful Dead-related concert I've heard in years.

by 123bones on 7/27/13Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

one of the best Phil Lesh and Friends shows that I have ever seen in my 36 years of seeing Grateful Dead related bands. What a beautiful location Penn's Peak is!! On top of the mountain with a spectacular view of the Pocono's. Would definitely go back for a show.

    Phil continues to amaze.

by INOURDR on 7/27/13Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

Simply the best Phil show I've seen. Scofield and Kadlecik fed off each other perfectly. It was just one of those magical nights that makes you shake your head in disbelief at what true musicians can produce in such a short time together. What makes Phil so great is his willingness to let his "friends" stretch out and take the music where it is meant to be. I have always preferred Phil shoes to Ratdog and even Furthur... A night I will not forget. Thank you, Phil.

Phil's sons are up and coming... They were GREAT at Sullivan Hall but seemed a bit tired on the Boat Cruise... His kids seem to be learning that touring isn"t ALL fun and games but rather REAL WORK ESPECIALLY when they did five shows in a row with many more to come... Keep it up guys you're already good and if u keep at it you'll be great in the not too distant future. (:

    Phil at Roseland

by Octive on 11/16/12Roseland Ballroom - New York

I attended the Monday evening show at Roseland. I have been a fan since 1974 and have seen many shows over the years, including a Wall of Sound and many of the '77 gems. This particular show was not enjoyable for me. The reason was the very poor quality of the sound. Phils bass was overpowering with heavy lo frequency muddled tones. The volume was excessive, and the throbbing was actually painful. I found myself standing behind the pillars at the bar trying to escape. I could not stand it any more so I left halfway thru the second set. Phil never seemed to play any notes of higher register, everything was super low thudding, not a hint of sweetness. One might say I should be able to appreciate the artistry in spite of the sound, and I might agree, except the sound was so totally poor that for the Band to ignore it was an endorsement. Part of the trip for me is the absolute beauty of the sound of Phil's bass, the unique woodey tones (BEW), sadly on this night it was subsonic and not much more. This show was physically painful to be at, my chest was vibrating from the low frequency sound waves, and I feared that I might be doing myself harm. I had been to 2 of the shows at the Beacon last year, and did not like them very much either, with Bobbys thin metallic sounding guitar, and overdone keyboards. I much prefer the runs at the Nokia, and Beacon from a few years back.

    Phil Lesh and Friends Rock!

by Golgikat on 11/15/12Roseland Ballroom - New York

So much fun watching a seasoned pro like Lesh interact with young talent that want to burn up what they got. Musically, Lesh brings out the best in his accompanying players as well as they bring out his best. These guys peaked everytime they went into a jam, keeping in the good ol' tradition of our beloved forefathers of the jam!

    P&F and Stanley Jordan

by WampusDaisy on 11/15/12Roseland Ballroom - New York

One of the best shows I've ever seen and I've seen well over 100 shows. Jordan's chemistry with the band was undeniable and the jamming was elevated to new heights with 3 premier lead guitarists trading unforgettable licks backed by the fearless Lesh's bass, the backbone of the band. I do hope Phil decides to play with Stanley again, in the future, as this combo should not be missed. As to the future, I think Phil should bring in Branford M, John Scofield and Stanley J along with John K and Jackie G for an allstar reunion! I can dream, right?
