About

Phil Collins in Concert

Born in West London in 1951, Phil Collins started playing drums at the age of five. His musical career began in earnest when he joined Genesis as a drummer in 1970, later becoming the group's lead vocalist in 1975 when Peter Gabriel departed. In 1981, he launched his solo career, releasing a string of pop albums that catapulted him to the immense profile he enjoys today. Phil Collins has released eight studio albums over the course of his solo career, along with three compilations, two soundtracks and more than forty singles. Of Collins' many releases, his third studio album, No Jacket Required, secured his greatest acclaim. It features notable tracks like "Sussudio" and "One More Night," both of which have received countless pop-culture references throughout the years. Collins is one of the legends of the 1970s and 1980s, a member of the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame, Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Modern Drummer Hall Of Fame and a musical influence to later musicians like Mike Portnoy, Taylor Hawkins, Nick D'Virgilio and many others.

Former Genesis member Phil Collins has achieved a level of solo success few others can claim. Collins' tour dates, such as his 2017 Not Dead Yet Tour, have seen him travel the United Kingdom. Other tours, like his 1997 The Trip Into The Light Of The World Tour, his 1985 No Jacket Required Tour, and 1983 Hello, I Must Be Going Tour, have taken him throughout Europe, North America, Asia and Oceania. As a solo act, Phil Collins is praised for his brilliant Pop songwriting, laced with elements from the other genres in which he's fluent like jazz, rock and fusion. His strong vocals, intricate drum parts and generous use of 1980s-style keyboard synths add to the richness of his sound. In concert, audiences can marvel as Collins sits majestically, belting out hits while his large band provides ample accompaniment. Collins' son Nicholas is often present, dazzling crowds with drumming just as impressive as his father's. Phil Collins' music has garnered impressive numbers. His albums have sold more than 150 million units worldwide. He's been nominated for more than 20 Grammy Awards. He's won 7 Grammys, along with various American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Brit Awards (and more) as he continues to record and perform across the globe.

In 2015, Collins remastered his eight solo albums with previously unreleased material and came out of retirement. In 2017, he started The Not Dead Yet Tour, named after his autobiography released in 2016. After many tour legs around the world, Collins is coming back to the U.S. for 15 dates.

loved the Motown - funny how everyone, young and old knew all the words to all the songs... would have enjoyed an encore though.

i loved seeing phil and his voice is so phenominal. That said, I was disappointed that I did not hear any of his solo stuff, I guess I wasnt in to motown as much as i thought. Show was a little flat. Audience did not seem very into it either.

Electric Factory show pffers intimate setting

by jbospunk on 6/21/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Great performance by Phil and company. Musicians included original members of the Funk Brothers who are known for their hit-making session work in the glory days of Motown. If you're gonna cover Motown, then you can't get any truer to the music than to grab these guys and take them out on the raod with you. Phil obviously understands this, and as a tribute to the music that inspired him as a child, he decided to give it a shot. Short of having the original voices on stage along side of him, he brought these songs to life in a true live setting and did Motown justice. If you were looking for the typical solo stuff, then you probably wouln't be inot it, however if you appreciate where he's coming from and dig the Motown era, then the show was a very rare treat to see him a little more personal than usual. If I closed my eyes, I could swear that I was listening to the bands backing the likes of The Temptations or Smokey Robinson. I think the only downside was the fact that the venue is standing room general admission, and there were quite a few annoying people who seemed more into playing drinking games and stumbling about drunk at the bar - which stretches the entire length of the floor on stage right. But all in all, a great show and a rare treat indeed. Chester Thompson on drums, Darryl Stuermer on guitar, Brad Cole on keys, as well as Motown legends Eddie Willis and Ray Monette on guitar, and Leslie Smith on percussion, Bob Babbitt on bass, an excellent 5 piece horn section and 6 incredible backing vocalists.

    Phil Collins is "Going Back"

by onemorenight on 6/21/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

What a tremendous show!!!!! Only complaint is that time went by much too quickly. It was fun to see Phil perform the songs that he loved to hear growing up. The orchestra and backup singers were awesome!!!!!!! Also great to see Chester Thompson and Daryl Sturmer. I thank Phil for coming to Philadelphia. Like he says we have quite a history with him. My first show was in 1977. What an amazing talent he is! I am headed back for night 2 tonight and a I cannot wait!

    Phil Collins can jam

by Ratta on 6/21/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

First time at the Electric Factory and it was better than expected. I was able to park close by and in a secure area. Phil Collins had a 2 hour jam session that was very good, I just wish he would have played some Genesis songs. Need to get there early for seats but standing room only wasn't too bad. The place had great AC, good sound and the no smoking policy was a plus.

    Motown & Phil

by CritterNJ on 6/21/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

I was really disappointed with Phil's Motown concert. While some of the selections were done well, it was not Phil Collins. I would have liked to have heard some of his hits interwoven with the new. Missed hearing "Take Me Home" and others. Phil is just not Mo-Town!

To see Phil Collins that up close and personnel was a dream come true of course the only thing that would have made it better was for him and the other artists to perform longer!!! Thanks to all who made last night a night I will remember for ever!!!!

    I was disappointed...

by PhilFan40 on 6/21/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

I was disappointed, not in Phil himself, but in the song choices. I knew he was going to be doing some R & B stuff, but I didn't realize that meant he would not sing even 1 of his own songs! I'm sure I wasn't the only one disappointed! Phil will always be my absolute favorite singer, but my parents probably would have had more fun at this concert. It was amazing to be standing only 30 yards from the man himself, and for that I am so happy. But even 1 Phil Collins song would have made the night worth the $75 ticket. He started at 8:15pm and ended at 9:45 - with no encore. The crew turned off the stage lights, took the microphones and opened all the doors for us to leave, while everyone stood there shouting for an encore. So disappointing......!

    Phil - Expectations were Surpassed!

by NancLM on 6/21/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Phil Collins is a musical genius & have been a fan since I heard him in the 70's, However, I really could not picture him singing Motown; but I wasn't about tio miss seeing him. Phil & his "big band" were incredible! As like Phil, I grew up with the same music & I must say that seeing & listening to him do this actually brought back my memories of my early youth with the tunes my parents loved so much. I did not have my normal high expectations prior to the concert since I love his classic rock. In fact the weather was so hot and humid, I considered not attending (but only for a second! :-) Was I ever most enjoyablely surprised! My hubby & I, Genesis fans to the core, had a wonderful time. Ironically, near the end of the show he sang one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard ((I think he said that it was a new one he wrote) about returnng to his youth! It was the only song in the genre of the "traditional" Phil Collin. I believe Phil can perform in most any genre now.

    Phil Collins ROCKS!

by Maralinda on 6/21/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

I'm not usually a Motown music fan and was hesitant about going to see Phil doing that kind of music but it was absolutely amazing! He was accompanied by the legendary Funk Brothers and they were spectacular!!! I'd definitely go see this show again. Phil is so versatile. The only problem I had was that annoying peeps in front of me that looked like they came from "The Jersey Shore" kept talking and texting throughout the whole show. I had to eventually move my front spot because of how annoying and disruptive they were!
